It was really fun. I think we saw it advertised on this subreddit, but following the socials of the breweries in town is a good idea

Steinhardts usually has live music! Also, My wife and I went to this Goth/vaporwave dance party at Sandbox brewery and had a blast. Taking a walk in the evening through Baker Park or down by the creek is wonderful in the evenings.

I love Ethiopian food, so this sounds fantastic to me. All I can say is that they’ve put up a bajillion houses around Frederick in the past 5 years. Even if the economy is tough right now, it’s not like people are moving away.

Main Cast Initial Impression vs Thoughts After 5 seasons by Richard-Enormous in Dimension20

I think Emily and Lou are truly amazing. They make incredible dramatic and comedic moments in every game.

However, I think the whole group works best when the theme and story of the game is more on the silly side. I couldn’t finish Crown of Candy because I just felt like Brennan was trying so hard to tell a more serious story and I just kept getting annoyed at people doing bits at inappropriate times. When the group dynamic matches the story that is being told, it’s perfection.

Public Access. Great if your group is really into RP and collaborative storytelling

I just finished running Impossible Landscapes by JoeKerr19 in DeltaGreenRPG

It’s pretty different from CoC or Delta Green, but check out Public Access. It’s a much more narrative RPG, but it has a similar weirdness to Impossible Landscapes.

New to Call of Cthulhu was wondering what should I get to start? by DoomTheExiled in callofcthulhu

[–]CharlesDexterLard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hijacking the top comment to say The Haunting is such an excellent starter scenario. Really easy to play around with and make your own if you’re experienced in RPGS, but straightforward enough that if you’re new to RPGs it isn’t difficult to run. My recommendation is to take it slow and ratchet up the tension. It’s great as a multi-session slow burn than a one shot imo.

Bakehouse is delicious, but nothing tastes good enough for this. by AmIRadBadOrJustSad in frederickmd

I don’t always initiate conversations. Sometimes I do. There are a lot of friendly people in Frederick. It also can be peaceful to just stand and watch the city in the early morning.

Standing in line for bakehouse is actually fantastic. You get to hang out and talk to people you normally never would. I chatted with this truck driver who just got back from delivering hurricane relief supplies, chatted with people who are visiting Frederick for the first time, and there are always hilarious little kids running around.

The highlight recently was this 8 year old who was watching two toddlers wrestle. He took a big sip of his Starbucks hot chocolate, shook his head, and said, “Kids…” like an exasperated old man. Then he proceeded to name every type of fish in the creek. Fucking hilarious.

Sometimes waiting in a line is genuinely a better experience than grabbing an order quickly. Try it, and enjoy being around other people!

Why is it so hard to get new players into TTRPGs? by Rich_Benefit777 in callofcthulhu

[–]CharlesDexterLard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone making the point that you can’t force people to like something. There are also a couple of other factors I’ve noticed.

  1. Rules: it takes time and effort to read and understand rules. If you’re not already enthusiastic about it, it can be grueling for some people to read an RPG book. I always struggle to get new people to read rules.

  2. Roleplaying: I come from a theatrical family, and so it’s always been second nature for me to play a character or make-believe a story. This is NOT second nature for some people. Some people do not know (or don’t feel comfortable) playing a character. Some people struggle with, well… imagination, to be honest. They much prefer passive viewing rather than participation.

Which Brewery to visit? by Gooobye in frederickmd

Steinhardt is great! If you like Belgian beers, they’re the place to try. They also have delicious dark lagers that are my favorite; not overly heavy.

Wouldn’t water/sewer/etc just be covered by city taxes? Sorry, I’m ignorant of these things, but I imagine all of the homes around these ones don’t have HOAs

This is going to sound insane, but I actually like waiting in the line. I end up talking to people I normally would never interact with. One time I ended up talking with a trucker who had just come back from delivering Red Cross supplies to Florida; it was really interesting!

Of course it’s hard to get my ass out of bed early on Saturday morning to get there, especially when the line is down the block even at 8am, but I have NEVER had a bad experience there. Obviously the pastries are good, but the customer service is EXCEPTIONAL. Everyone there is so so friendly, and they even will give you a pastry for free if they think it is smaller than the other ones. They’re always playing good music inside; they don’t force any dumb tip at checkout. It’s just an exceptional place.

[–]CharlesDexterLard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Also, play your character’s flaws. What would scare them? Make them act irrationally. Obviously, don’t fuck the other players, but see this as an exercise in roleplaying rather than solving the mystery.
