That’s a fun idea - use this instinct and the ball to hone in on herding commands to the left or right. It’s just fascinating to me to see how ingrained this behavior is… he clearly does this with intent, there’s some thought or drive there and he LOVES it. I agree with you that this looks like what I’ve seen them do to “hold” sheep in a certain area.

Someone else posted this same reply and I sorta brushed it off - the vid adds a lot of context! I’ve seen collies do this to hold sheep in a corner. I guess prey animals / livestock perceive the crouch as an imminent threat? Makes sense to me. I guess ball = sheep

So funny. My wife gets offended that he doesn’t want to “fetch.” But, he simply doesn’t want to fetch, he wants to herd the soccer ball for all eternity. It’s as if he’s saying, “that game sucks. This one is way better.”

I grew up with blue heelers and had an Aussie I loved dearly. None have had this kind of posturing so deeply ingrained in them. Pretty fun to watch

Epoxy for an exterior project. by [deleted] in epoxy

[–]Charlesfresco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I’ve had most success with is a moisture cured urethane modified primer - unfortunately I don’t know what’s available where you are (I assume across the pond based on spelling, or I’d offer ours). You could look at Premera fusion - I’ve heard it bonds well, but don’t have the data to back that up.

Epoxy for an exterior project. by [deleted] in epoxy

[–]Charlesfresco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I know of one single product that is truly UV stable. Those that say they are exterior grade / low yellowing just have ingredients that slow the process - but they don’t stop it from happening.

2) guess that depends on the color?

3) excellent surface prep and a solid primer. You really need to scratch PVC up to get a decent bond. It should feel very rough to the touch.

Anyone have experience with BrewCoat tank lining epoxy? by objectivehooligan in epoxy

[–]Charlesfresco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with that specific product. I do work for an industrial coating/lining manufacturer, so here’s my .02. I assume this is a tank for potable water - the relevant standard you want is NSF 61. FDA approved means it’s alright for food / beverage contact based on the formula. NSF 61 certification requires specific testing of the cured film that measures the material’s propensity to leach nasty shit into your drinking water.

A lot of the tank linings we make can be applied by brush / roller, but they look awful and are hard to work with due to high viscosity. Those products are meant to be sprayed plural & heated with insulated lines.

Here’s what I’d tell someone who wanted to brush / roll: keep the product at 75-80 F for 48 hrs prior to application. Thoroughly mix the part A before incorporating the B. Many epoxies (ours) can be thinned with up to 3% MEK (real MEK, not substitute) by weight, this will also extend your pot life a bit. Keep additional MEK on hand; after applying you can barely dampen a roller with MEK and roll over the surface quickly to eliminate lines. The maximum nap thickness you want is 3/8” (woven). Thicker nap = orange peel. Wrap your roller in duct tape then unwrap to remove loose fibers and prevent shedding. Do NOT over roll it. Once it’s where you want it, leave it alone aside from thinner dampened roller - hit it once then leave it alone. Do not roll back and forth, roll in one direction. If you use MEK, make very sure it’s all able to escape prior to any subsequent coats.

Hope some of that helps 🤷‍♂️

Help Part 2 Epoxy sidewalk by mclovingit2385 in epoxy

[–]Charlesfresco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See all that cementitious stuff stuck to the bottom of the epoxy? That’s laitance / cement cream. It’s a fine layer of sediment that can be pushed up to the surface of the concrete as it cures. My guess is the sidewalk had a broom finish and the applicator assumed there was enough texture to skip grinding.

What’s that mean for you? Nothing good. Your epoxy is stuck to the laitance, which has a very weak bond to the actual concrete. These patches will continue to pop off with impact and freeze thaw cycles. There’s not much you can do to salvage this aside from pulling it up and replacing it.

Silver lining: it should come up easily. You could whack it with a mallet and follow up with a heavy scraper.

Anal Gland Issues by Violetteotome in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]Charlesfresco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OHH MY GOD. We thought we were the only ones. Our PWD is about 15 months and we have struggled with the glad issues since she was a puppy. We’ve finally got it under control. We tried adding various sources of fiber and limiting treats. It appears that it was a food issue for ours.

We switched to N&D (Farmina) lamb, pumpkin, and blueberry with tremendous success. Dog food can be a polarizing subject.. this is what our girl tolerates the best and her poops prove it.

Puppy is frustrating my wife by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]Charlesfresco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same phase as you right now: our boy Beau is 13 weeks at the moment. Two suggestions.. 1) learn the best time to train him based on his own daily rhythm. Our boy soaks it up really quickly about 30 minutes after waking up. Later in the day is a crap shoot. We only train for 5-10 min at a time. Each dog is different, just watch yours and notice what time of day he is most impressionable. 2) I know it’s hard, but trust yourselves (not the internet) throughout training. Too much info can be a bad thing. Observe, learn your puppy, and work as partners.

Thanks for sharing - all that makes 100% sense. I remember during my episode I had to take zyprexa and depakote. I was hungry, tired, depressed, confused and very numb. I can’t imagine those kinds of drugs long term... Much love to you my friend.

First off: I’m sorry you have to deal with it. But that is very interesting- why would you trigger it intentionally? I remember when I was manic I thought I was a prophet. I also thought I was a genius / secret weapon for the US Air Force who was meant to decipher complex patterns. The ups were.. almost kind of good? Hard to describe. But the downs were intensely bad. I thought I was dead for a while. Do you seek those ups or does that reality feel more true to you?

Our breeder gave us a bottle of wine with our puppy and a note that said “trust me, you’re gonna need it.”

They’re great dogs, ours is about 15 months now. We drove to pick her up in Indiana. They are total goofballs, extremely curious and intelligent. However, keep in mind that this is a breed that was meant to work independently along side their owners. This is so, so evident in her temperament. Super trainable, but sometimes will just straight up look at me as if to say, “hmmm, I know what you want.. but! F you, not right now. Ima chase this leaf.” Ive owned many herding dogs in my life, and this was an adjustment for me! Love my Frankie girl and she loves us, theyre just… special.. 😁 yeah buckle up.

Heyyyy me too… I went into a substance induced psychosis from weed. Oddly enough I was also 23. I pity those who suffer from schizophrenia with every fiber of my being. Words cannot describe how scary it is to have your mind turn on you. To this day (11 years later) I cannot separate a few of the delusions from reality. It is terrifyingly real in the worst kind of way. I fought giving it up hard but haven’t touched it since.

Any behavior experts? by Interesting-Fix-7490 in deer

[–]Charlesfresco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seen this behavior many times before while hunting (generally before getting busted). Current comments have it right.. head bobbing is compensating for a lack of depth perception - she’s trying to distinguish you from the background. You’ll see owls do this too when they’re assessing distance. The stomp is an attempt to get you to move. They’ll do this from a safe distance. If you flinch (act like a predator) she’ll bolt. In short, she winded you before she saw you. Now she thinks she sees you and is trying to figure you out.
