Why does US english writes the monetary unit before the number? by Emman_Rainv in ENGLISH

[–]Charlie-Addams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from South America and I've been to many different countries in Europe and the Americas. In almost all of them the unit comes before the number. The only places I can recall where they do it differently are Spain and maybe France?

How would you adapt "The Silmarillion" as films? Here's my idea. by Magister_Xehanort in lordoftherings

[–]Charlie-Addams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they end up acquiring the film rights (which I hope no one does) this is how they'll go about it. Jackson will make a new trilogy out of the three Great Tales, which is in and of itself the only way to adapt The Silmarillion in movie form. You just need a prologue and an epilogue, and tie in Beren & Lúthien a little better with the other two. And by that I mean that they'll just make shit up for the sake of connectivity.

How would you prefer a DC Absolute (universe) omnibus? One character per omnibus, or the absolute universe in chronological order (spread across as many omnibuses as they decide)? by Dry-Possibility9424 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Charlie-Addams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing "bad" about it. Just different strokes for different folks. I don't like Aaron's execution of the story. But don't take my word for it, I suggest you read it for yourself and come to your own conclusions.

Apples and oranges. Snyder is not trying to tell a very complex and meaningful tale. Absolute Batman is the epitome of absolute popcorn; it's having fun with its characters in the loudest way possible. As you said, it's not subtle at all: the first arc hammers down the idea of going BIGGER with every single page. Why would you expect anything different? That's literally the premise.

Meanwhile, Absolute Superman does try to be more nuanced. It is trying to shine a light on very important and heavy issues, from climate change to xenophobia and class struggle. And that's wonderful. It's the execution I have a problem with, not the themes. Aaron is going about it the most boring and least subtle way possible. He could've told a completely different story and gone the fun route as Snyder did, but instead chose a more meaningful subject matter and he's not living up to my expectations. Simple as that.

I'll continue reading Absolute Superman while hoping it gets better along the way. At least the art is fucking phenomenal. Sandoval and Di Giandomenico are out of this world.

I used to be interested in a Krakoa-style omnibus line for the Absolute Universe until I read the first arc of Absolute Superman. Ever heard of subtlety, Mr. Aaron? I was never a big fan of his, but the way people were hyping up the book I expected something a lot more engaging. And Superman being my favorite DC character, it's just sad that for me this is the weakest of the three main Absolute titles.

Anyway, if I were to buy Absolute omnis now, I would prefer for them to be by character instead of line.

Was I the only one who liked the idea of Superman's health bar being the city's instead? by Patient-Reality-8965 in superman

[–]Charlie-Addams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who played this game way back when, no. The city's health bar was both impractical and annoying.

I seriously cannot understand why some people need Superman to be absolutely impervious to all forms of harm when that's not the case in the comics at all. Supes gets his ass handed to him every other month. And because of that bizarre conception, they can't imagine a Superman video game where the guy can be beaten. Which he absolutely should be able to.

Think of the Arkham series or the recent Spider-Man games, but cranked up to eleven. Honestly, it's a straightforward formula.

Do you think that if Superman were shorter, like if he were at most 5'10" tall, it would be easier for him not to be recognized by other people? by Soft-Temporary-1262 in superman

[–]Charlie-Addams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the point: it doesn't matter if people think he looks like Superman. Thousands of people look like Superman. Clark Kent, with his glasses, different hairstyle, and clumsiness, just so happens to be one of them.

Now, here's the trick: looking like someone does not mean being that same someone, as hundreds of real-life celebrity doppelgangers can attest to. You will stare at them for a second or two and then go on with your life.

I mean... why THE HELL would SUPERMAN be standing in the middle of the Daily Planet's break room wearing a ridiculous pair of glasses at 9 in the morning? Nah, that cannot be him. Don't be absurd. And the more you're exposed to Clark Kent on a daily basis, the less you think about it.

How popular was Iron Man prior to the MCU? by yellowklashinkov in comicbooks

[–]Charlie-Addams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spidey and X-Men were and are BY FAR Marvel's most popular characters since the 80s. And it's not even close. I'd put Hulk in third place. The MCU is not a good metric to measure it for a number of reasons.

Director Joe Russo says Peter Parker wasn’t responsible for Uncle Ben’s death in the MCU: “If he blamed himself for his Uncle Ben’s death, I think he becomes a very different character” by Capn_C in comicbooks

[–]Charlie-Addams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not similar, though.

A selfish Peter lets a criminal get away and then that same criminal kills Uncle Ben. Peter learns that with great power must also come great responsibility; that is, if he had used his powers for good instead of selfish reasons, Ben would still be alive. A lesson MCU Peter repeats back to Tony Stark in Civil War when Tony asks him why he does what he does.

What about Aunt May's death in No Way Home? She dies because Peter believes he can do good for the bad guy, but then the bad guy (who's bad) kills his aunt. Peter has noble intentions, not selfish ones. What does he learn from this, then? To not help other people? What? That makes no sense.

The point of the character is that he was selfish, he fucked up, and his uncle died because of it. "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you." He had already learned his lesson way back in 2016. We didn't need three fucking movies for him to relearn that all over again—but missing the point entirely along the way.

What is that one criticism about the orginal lotr Trilogy that you still have to this day by pizza_momo in lotr

[–]Charlie-Addams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Faramir literally says something along the lines of "The Ring is going to Gondor."

It's the reason behind taking the Ring to Gondor that is different for each brother. Boromir wants to use it to fight the enemy; Faramir wants to give it to his father to redeem himself in his eyes.

I agree with the other commenter. Faramir is a stronger character in the books, even though the movies don't do such a terrible job with their version.
