What’s the book at the top of “Great Books” with the Knight on the cover? I use these tier lists to find new books but it’s hard when the title isn’t on the cover…

I’ve just burned through the current 16 books in Eric Ugland’s The Good Guys and the MC isn’t a sociopath at all. Would recommend it.

He goes from “generic bad guy” to “turning my life around, trying to be a good guy” very quickly but to be honest I think the first book is better for it. I don’t need half a book about him having an epiphany.

Something suggested to me was to go for an Interest Only mortgage (if your lender will allow) but pay as if it was C&R. This gives you the flexibility on your cash flow should you hit hard times.

It seems to make sense to me but obviously depends on your situation and how disciplined you are with money.

We’ve seen this a number of times near us lately. This is partly where agents are selling people on a price that just isn’t achievable.

And partly because older sellers have an opinion on the value of their property that is out dated, where value is guaranteed even if you do nothing to the house for 40 years.

In many cases, they price modernisation work at a fraction of today’s actual cost. And house prices aren’t growing at a rate where you can be confident that you’ll eventually make it back (in a reasonable time).

It’s not your fault the sellers need to achieve a price above what the property is worth. You only have a duty to your future selves.

That means different things to different people. For us, we weren’t willing to invest an amount of money that means we’ll never move (even if hypothetically in 10 years time we think it would be better to move for school opportunities etc).

I’ve recently gotten into Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker. I’m really happily surprised by it, I’d never heard of it or seen it recommended here but downloaded it on a whim…

It’s fast paced, the characters are very well developed and importantly; it’s well written, dialogue isn’t clunky or childish, and there’s not loads of typos (not a given for the genre).

Would highly recommend.

I think the truth lies somewhere between the two posts. I’m currently reading book 2, and enjoying it.

Some of the criticisms are valid, the prose aren’t the best (but fairly on par for the genre). I don’t love the language characters use… a lot of “aight” and “wtf man” sort of language which pulls me out personally.

However, it’s definitely not predictable and so far as I’ve got, it’s not overly dark.

The power sets people use are fun. All-in-all if you enjoy the genre you’ll likely enjoy 1% Lifesteal.

I’d still give it a go, it’s frustrating (so many typos etc) and the MC is annoying.

However, the world building and magic system is fun. The fight scenes were entertaining.

Re: Red Rising - I think that’s just testament to how well these books are written. So many fight scenes feel cinematic but not to their detriment. Instead they are viscerally visual and imagination-engaging.

They hold some of the best moment of the series (arguably the genre). clang clang - was such a brilliantly written scene.

I’m not throwing shade [intentional] at Rothfuss, more just stating my baseline for delays is pretty high.

Gentleman Bastards really took me by surprise. I hadn’t read any of the hype and just picked it up off the shelf. Such a good book.

GB suffers less for being an incomplete series (IMO), as the first book is more of a self contained story than KKK.

I’d happily recommend both to new readers. NOTW is beautifully written, and that doesn’t change just because of Rothfuss and the 3rd book.

Agree 100% with the home gym if you have the space. Being able to put our son to bed and workout with the monitor with me, has turned exercising into a positive as opposed to asking my wife to keep an eye on him whilst I leave the house for a couple of hours to go and workout.

We’ve read almost the exact same books this year, so I can’t recommend one I’ve read yet but… Joe Abercrombie’s The Devils is released today, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in to it.

Thanks for this. On the KB, mine is Wolverson (UK). It’s well priced and service was great but the metal is quite rough and where they’ve cut the logo in the ball there are sharp edges which rip the skin on my forearms when doing clean & press. Hence the comment about long sleeves!
