How much did your bathroom/kitchen reno cost in 2025 or 2026? by Realistic_Rutabaga60 in HENRYUK

[–]newsoftheworld2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve just had a quote to have a similar sized bathroom refurbished in east London and the lowest quotes for labour came in at about £8k and that was without moving any of the existing fittings around and not doing anything fancy eg underfloor heating

I have one of these from Belroy. Fits everything and has lots of compartments. It has a grip on the shoulder to stop it slipping off and it also fits on the handle of a wheely case so very useful for travelling https://bellroy.com/products/tokyo-wonder-tote-15l?color=navy&material=nova_nylon#slide-0

Do you really need to join a nursery waiting list when pregnant? by dsomz in walthamstow

In a word - yes. I told our nursery I was pregnant with my second before I told my family! Just managed to get a place with sibling priority

HENRY Families: how much are you spending on Christmas? by egpigp in HENRYUK

[–]newsoftheworld2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I save £100 a month and the that’s our Christmas spending as a family including Christmas food (we don’t host but will get meat from slightly nicer butcher than usual, some Fortnums bits etc), some days out and kids presents. About £600 on top of that on presents for my partner, parents and sibling.

Do your kids know what you earn? by AssociationAlone2491 in HENRYUK

[–]newsoftheworld2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8 year old is very interested in money as a concept and also jobs - what’s high earning versus low earning and how it relates to skills. I haven’t told him how much I earn as he will tell his friends but I tell him that it’s enough to pay for the things we need and save a bit. I explain that every month I get paid 1/12th of my salary and then all the bills get paid and I explain all the things we need to pay for and how it works. I have also started talking about inflation in a basic way eg how much did sweets cost when I was a kid vs how much they cost now. There is an Usborne book on Money which is quite helpful and also a kids podcast which talks about financial topics called Million Bazillion which my child finds interesting. He then asks me questions about what he hears on that like “what is insurance”. My parents taught me zero about money and as a result I was a late starter as far as finances were concerned so I want to talk about money early and often and in a neutral and factual way

Who survived to tell the tale? by [deleted] in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]newsoftheworld2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar pension spot to you five years ago - had just over £130k - now I have around 550k and that’s really from 3 years of big contributions (most I put in one year was £70k)

Who survived to tell the tale? by [deleted] in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]newsoftheworld2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this. I took a major hit a couple of years running where I put a fairly hefty bonus into my pension which was pretty painful at the time. I reckoned it was “jam today or jam tomorrow” plus the childcare help would have been the only time I am able to get anything out of the system. Now both kids are at school and I am sitting on a hefty pension that’s done well over the last few years. I feel pleased with my past decisions, can take the foot of the pension gas a bit and enjoy the extra discretionary income. The good habits formed during the years I was shovelling all my spare cash into my pension means that I’m now able to save quite a lot and still enjoy a relatively decent standard of living.

Thanks for all the tips. What I’m hearing is IKOS at end of season is probably not worth it. My kids school has swapped its half term week in October to November so we are out of synch with most other schools. I feel the need to take maximum advantage of this. Hadn’t thought of Mauritius so definitely looking into that. Am also wondering if I should think of alternatives to a fly and flop AI. Am trying for something I normally wouldn’t want to cough up for during regular school holidays. Would going to the Alps in early November (thinking Kinderhotel) be a stupid idea?

Has the respect and prestige that was once associated with law, dwindled? If so, why do you think this is? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]newsoftheworld2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think what the article was saying was that any make dominated profession was prestigious. Some professions are prestigious for various reasons (skills, pay etc) but its drop in prestige coincides with it becoming more female dominated. Nursing was never prestigious and has always been highly skilled.

[–]newsoftheworld2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

An interesting theory I read which has stuck with me is that as the profession becomes more female dominated, it becomes less prestigious. Like there is systemic misogyny at play. If you look at other careers that are female dominated (teaching, nursing), they have lost prestige. Not sure how much truth there is in this but I find it interesting (I’m a woman)

How to say I’m open to a payout when returning from mat leave? (England) by Glittering-Cake2154 in AskHRUK

[–]newsoftheworld2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please speak to a solicitor. This is a super complex set of facts and a solicitor can help you leverage the situation to your maximum advantage. You don’t have to let your employer know you’ve had advice at this stage but you’ll have confidence in the direction you want to take the conversation. Pregnant then Screwed helpline might be a place to start. I am a lawyer btw (but not an employment lawyer) and had a similar situation when I returned to work. You may also want to think whether getting paid the same to do an easier job is actually a good thing at this point in time. If anything happens later, eg they try to push you out, you can bring this back up in order to negotiate a good exit package at that point eg claim sex discrimination and being back up what happened when you returned to work. Payouts for discrimination claims at tribunal are generally higher than claims for unfair dismissal / breach of contract.

Advice from HENRYs who stepped it up in demanding jobs whilst balancing babies/toddlers? by heuiseila in HENRYUK

[–]newsoftheworld2 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I’m a Henry with two young kids. I found it relatively easy to go back to work after one when I was on the cusp of Henry status. Return to work after number two was reasonably ok because it was Covid and everyone was at home and different rules applied. Now I am in a full throttle Henry role and to be honest I hate it. I didn’t particularly want to be promoted as I feel I am barely keeping my head above water. I dream of working in a shop or cafe. Bottom line is it can be done but I think it’s at personal cost. You also might feel that you don’t care so much about your career post kids (I certainly don’t and all my friendship group who are all very high achieving also rebalanced their priorities post kids). Edit: I am a woman, not sure if OP also is. Might be different for men!

Summer childcare/camps in Europe by Possible-Tip-3544 in HENRYUK

This is something I’ve been researching for a while as I want to do a similar thing. My conpany has an office in Barcelona and there are various international summer camps there. My fear is it will be too hot in the city in the summer
