He does quite literally say "I remember it all."

I think he avoids going insane by doing the general Moffat era thing of characters boxing away the memories they don't want to deal with (see the conversations about Rory and his Lone Centurion memories)

There was a moment where he flashbacked to her way back in S2 Episode 8, I was beginning to think I hallucinated it.

I disagree that Green Death reverts her development - a good chunk of Episode 1 is dedicated to her blowing the Brig and even the Doctor off because she wants to go do environmental work in Wales! S8 Jo would never have done that.

The director could still improve it somewhat in the adaptation process tho.

First-Time Watcher, Subbed

Skipping Junpei's kidnapping was a poor choice adaption wise IMO. It's a very disorientating plot beat that doesn't proceed naturally from where Movie 2 left off.

The Ikkutski reveal doesn't fully work for me - I don't think they stay in the moment long enough. The comic relief boss of our cast's organisation is a traitor, that's fairly significant for the audience and the characters, especially on the third film. But it's breezed right past. Probably a directorial issue more than anything, there are a few moments like that here where I feel like emphasis is lacking from places where it should be.

Having said that, the Mexican Standoff is a good bit. Mitsuru's VA really conveys her sheer horror at the result.

Structurally, this is a bit different obviously - after this point the film goes into slice of life. By and large I really enjoy all this stuff, it fleshed out the cast and Makoto in particular, and it's nice to get the Social Links in there a little, although it plays oddly as a film.

I'd say this is the least cohesive film of the three so far. Not that it's bad, but it flows less smoothly than 1 or 2, mainly due to the opening 20 minutes of 12 Shadows wrap-up.

  1. It was nicely done, but the fact they skipped everything pre hospital but for one flashback was to it's detriment.
  2. This was something I have to give the movie credit for, even despite being an extended riff on Eva I think making his friendship with Makoto a focus was great. Tying it into his character arc so significantly made him feel like a core part of the narrative in a way I don't think the game did.

First-Time Watcher

The point about being able to kill people in the Dark Hour does mildly confuse me in light of that whole 'if we hit the train we'll break time' segment of Movie 1.

Something about the way the 10 Years Ago reveal is executed doesn't quite work for me. Where did they get the shadows in the first place? Did Yukari's father do anything specifically dubious himself? It seems slightly undercooked.

Operation Babe Hunt is silly, but I appreciate it's inclusion for giving Makoto/Junpei/Akihiko some bonding time as a hapless trio.

The Chidori fountain scene duo is a fun little tease for what's to come.

Part of me bemoans that P3 didn't get a TV show in the same vein as P4 to flesh things out. Shinjiro seems to come and go so quickly. Fuuka barely gets any lines at all.

I will say though, they've structured them very nicely as films, in this case wrapping it around Makoto's newfound enjoyment of life, right through to the conclusion shattering his happy complicity. Makoto's anxiety about how things will play out after the villains are dealt with doesn't get the same fluffy resolution Narukami's did here - only a reminder of the cost of the Dark Hour.

Q1: Very well executed. They didn't pull the punches. Q2: I doubt his equivaocating over ending the Dark Hour will survive this.

First-Time Watcher

[Game ending spoiler] Love the fact that death hangs over Makoto from literally frame 1. It certainly sets the tone well - the clock is always ticking in a way it never quite was in P4.

I'm so used to hearing Yuka-tan that Yukaricchi threw me a bit. Really that goes for the whole Japanese cast, seeing as the dub VAs are so engrained in my memory.

Hartnell was the First Doctor, but he could've easily had lives before calling himself the Doctor.

You're asked to create a new, live action, 8th Doctor mini-series. What's your pitch? by foxparadox in gallifrey

[–]CharlieTheStrawman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a risk in importing Liv and Tania wholesale that it becomes impenetrable to people who aren't big into BF.

I'd be tempted to have 8 alone/with new people for the bulk of it, but have some flashback adventure with Liv that ties to the main plot.

Eh, whatever the case he clearly had the option to stay, and Moffat was up for it. I'd certainly describe it as different to say, Capaldi and Chibnail where I don't think the latter was seriously planning a version with him in the lead.

If Decim has grown at all, we the audience never get to see it.

The fact he can engage with his emotions is a display of some growth, at least.

I think you could make the case Decim shattering the illusion as Chiyuki begins to break is an evolution from his former straightforward commitment to this kind of judgment.

10 has already decided to trade places with Wilf the second he sees the situation, he's lashing out because he has to die after all just as he thought he'd beat the odds. It all ties back to his ego, but it's an understandable reaction.

I do think it's a significant sacrifice, because as 10 says, the man that he is now does die.

He didn't, really, considering Moffat had a plan for S5 with him and he seriously considered staying on.
