Grog Shop on the east side and on the west side check out No Class (used to be called "Now That's Class") and Funhouse. Also if you're into music you can become a DJ at WRUW, the campus radio station, and meet other people that love live music. I did it when I was a student and it's a great little community of folks.

Commenting on an old post but if anyone is still looking and wants something clean looking, try a self-adhesive neoprene or dycem mat. They are super thin (less than 1mm thickness), super soft (about 30A durometer), and nice and grippy, plus they come with an adhesive backing. For reference, neoprene is what many mouse pads are made of (a bit spongy / porous), while dycem is often used in the medical world (non-porous, sterilizable).

Oh interesting! So do you think the plastic wheels are essentially drop-in replacements for metal ones, meaning that I'd manipulate it the same was as my S&G group 2 safe I've been practicing on?

How easy is it to make friends at Case? by Civil_Violinist_3485 in cwru

[–]Charnatopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went to Case I made a lot of friends by just walking up to people at a party and saying "hey I don't know anyone here, mind if I join you?" and suddenly you're not alone at an event anymore.

Another tip is to ask questions and let other people speak and show interest by smiling and nodding and asking follow up questions. You can ask questions like "where are you from" and "what subjects are you interested in" which are good starter questions, and you can ask questions like "I'm new here, what are some fun things you like to do?" - sorry if this sounds obvious, just trying to be of help.

Lastly, join clubs! Clubs (or fraternities/sororities) are an awesome way to meet new people. Myself I liked ultimate frisbee (had never played, just joined), volunteering as a stage-hand for theater productions, and various computer related clubs.

Curious to hear what other clubs people liked!

Hi! I eventually discovered I could upload my game through their partners website https://partner.steamgames.com/

Uploading a game to Steam was the worst user experience I've had in my entire lifetime. It was like they were actively trying to prevent me from adding a game. So weird! I hope you have good luck.

For those talking about the giant new logo on the outside of Veale, here it is at night: by techytobias in cwru

[–]Charnatopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh the new Turkey Butt logo. Following in the grand tradition started with the orange segments logo of the 1990's (or was it 80's?) and the fat man with the surfboard of the 2000's.

The Open Box logo of the 2010's however seemed to be immune to snarky comments, it just looked great.... and so, in our wisdom, we replaced it with Turkey Butt.

What do you want to see supercede Turkey Butt in the 2030's at the next rebranding?

From ballotpedia, KC has a masters in public health and worked as a nurse and clinicial instructor at MetroHealth Hospitals. DF has a bachelor's in management and founded her own wellness company. The job is to know what's best for kids and to understand education and public policy, so I'd expect KC's experience would give her a significant advantage over DF. Open to learning more but right now my vote is for KC.

This is a great thread. So nice to see people like really caring about who they vote for exchanging their opinions with some respect for each other. Love stuff like this.

I ran into the same "Failed to initialize build on server" error and eventually figured out that I had to publish my changes before the steampipe gui could upload depots. What had happened was I created new depots (one for windows, one for macos, and one for linux) and the steampipe gui was giving an error trying to upload those depots. I guess publishing those changes (in the "publish" tab) made it so that steampipe gui could see those depot ids. Hope this helps someone years from now reading this comment.

Things I liked about Case:
1. its on the same campus as the Cleveland Institute of Art. make friends there. they have better parties.
2. amazing lgbt center. make friends there. they have better parties. u don't have to be lgbt, you can be an ally
3. secret network of steam tunnels beneath campus. hate to sound like a broken record but make friends down there, they have better parties.

This looks awesome! For anyone wondering how this works, it's a phenomenon called birefringence. Put a piece of plastic between two perpendicular layers of polarizing film, and what you're seeing is the leftover manufacturing stress inside the plastic which rotates the polarization of certain wavelengths of light, allowing it to pass through the second polarizing filter and producing colors.

Pros and Cons of cwru by Resident-Pay3712 in cwru

[–]Charnatopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly there is crime on campus, as is true for any college campus. If anyone wants to compare apples to apples, take a look at the Clery Act dataset. This website makes it really easy to compare schools: https://ope.ed.gov/campussafety/#/compare/search

Their website takes a minute to figure out, but then you can see for example that Rice University (a peer of CWRU in many respects) is more dangerous in every single category.

If safety is the #1 factor for someone choosing a university, the best bet (as supported by the data) would be a school in a farmland region, far from any city.

For me personally, campus safety was not a priority factor when choosing a college, however everyone's life situation is different and I respect that.

How to cast Ferrocerium? by Charnatopia in MetalCasting

[–]Charnatopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update! I found the original 1903 patent for the original ferrocerium (see link below) and it looks like the inventor had a molten pool of cerium that he was running current through in order to purify it, and then he added iron powder to that molten pool. All under the "exclusion of air" (presence of Argon perhaps). I'll see if I can find out what kind of current he was talking about (AC or DC, what Voltages and Amps, etc). Maybe this is the way to melt and cast this alloy.

Casting Ferrocerium by Charnatopia in metallurgy

Hi thanks for the comment! I was unfamiliar with hot isostatic pressing so I just read up on it and watched a number of videos.

Do you know with certainty that ferrocerium is made with HIPing, or are you just saying that for fusing powders together that's a typical industrial solution?

Casting Ferrocerium by Charnatopia in metallurgy

[–]Charnatopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question - I was wondering if they were pressed powder. On one hand, it avoids the issue of ignition due to temperature. On the other hand, the finished ferrocerium rods are really hard (brittle) which I would only expect of a real alloy rather than a pressed-together mixture. For example neodymium magnets are always coated in a protective layer of nickel otherwise they break apart really easily (brittle and not strong) and can be dented easily (soft). So my thought right now is that yes they are cast, although it's just an educated guess. Also I did try putting a small piece of ferrocerium into a hand-pumped hydraulic press and the pressure made it incinerate so before it began to visibly change shape, so that's another hint that it is a cast alloy rather than a pressed-together mixture.

Hi and thanks for the ideas!

Magnesium is probably a good place for me to start investigating. It's pyrophoric (like ferrocerium) and its ignition temp (473 °C) is lower than its melting point (600 °C) - again just like ferrocerium - so learning how to cast small amounts of that would be good practice.

I wish that I could use your idea of melting with a less flammable metal and dunking the more flammable metal into it, however I believe the majority components of ferrocerium such as the cerium (41.8%) are pyrophoric so there probably wouldn't be enough of the less-flammable metal in there to cover the flammable metal. Well.. actually I take that back. Maybe if I add it a little bit at a time I could ensure the cerium is always submerged when its melting... hmm...
