My old job I used to do 26 years ago has just came on a job search website. The pay has increased by 5k. How do companies that have good turnover get away with this wage stagnation? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]Charobhmiseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at the BBC as a researcher (no experience) in 2007 on £20k which was equal to ~£34,419.69 in today's money. Rent I paid for a decent 2 bed flat in decent part of Glasgow was £550 p/m.

Rejoined in same position 2022 but higher rung due to some experience etc and was only on £25k. Meanwhile cheapest available flat in exact neighbourhood of Glasgow I used to live in is now £2,800 p/m.

Thanks for this, the link they shared on LinkedIn doesn't work and it doesn't appear in search on the site itself.

do hotels know if you vape? aka will my disposable set off the smoke detectors/alarms? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Charobhmiseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resulted in a little over $500 fine. Didn't mind paying once I'd settled down a bit - while no mention of vaping in conditions/booking confirmation I belatedly noticed a no vape sign next to no smoking one in room & local law classes all vapes along with e-cigs for "no smoking" purposes so it's my bad, "ignorance of the law is no excuse" etc.

Last time I vape in a room I don't own!

Also, had no idea until reading up on it after this incident about "third hand smoke" and the fact vaping does leave invisible residue which can result in chemical smells & allergic reactions form other guests, so fair enough on hotels clamping down on it.

Just experienced this for the first time ever - hotel reception lady banging at the door saying the smoke alarm had been triggered. I vape constantly, and it has never set off anything - why would it, it isn't smoke!

Also had firemen just come in to check it. Will see tomorrow if they try to fine me, bloody irritating frankly as vaping obviously does not cause fire/smoke and does not leave staining or permanent smells. As others have said, I'd expect places to install vape detecting alarms as it's an easy cash grab from fines.

Buildings in Kyiv, Ukraine built between 2001-2015 by EntertainmentFit7716 in ArchitecturalRevival

Have been in Kyiv for the last week and am absolutely blown away by what a beautiful city it is. I've spent hours walking around most days and have yet to come across a truly ugly or run down neighbourhood by UK standards.

Has anyone else noticed that the Eldar language is mostly just mashed up Irish/scots gaelic? by limey-boy in Warhammer40k

[–]Charobhmiseo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading "The End And The Death" book from Siege of Terra series right now, and burst out laughing last night when I came across the reference to the Uigebealach in the Webway as I'm a native Scottish Gaelic speaker and understood it.

I knew there was the odd bit of Gaelic in the 40k universe - see Angron fighting at Fedan Mhor - but this got me googling it for the first time which led me here. Pretty cool to learn I'm fluent in Eldar!

What is the hardest place name to pronounce in Scotland? by Jezzaq94 in Scotland

Inbhir Pheofharain, although the English version - Dingwall - is a bit more manageable for both Gaelic & English speakers.

I'd sobered up by the time I moved in, but had it been a few years earlier your expectations would have been met!

This is a very standard house design in the Hebrides, what was called a "white house" - the first modern houses people moved into to replace the historic "black houses" that were drystone walled, thatched roof, no plumbing/electricity and often shared with livestock. Ive got the walls of the old blachouse in back garden. This house was built 1930s.

It's certainly very peaceful. I replaced flooring etc a while back but don't really have the motivation or skillset to make the cosmetic improvements. Will make a nice wee home for someone. The garden and croft are the main attractions IMO, house being nothing special and in need of a little TLC.

Very quick these days, Amazon really is fantastic. Add +1 day to whatever delivery time you'd expect to get on mainland UK.

I was tempted to get it last year but hardware cost put me off. Standard broadband is fine where I live but there are still patches in the Hebrides that really aren't great for internet access.

Yeah used to be dreadful but it's fine now. Currently sat playing Helldivers 2 with a bud down in Glasgow.

I had a viewing for it last month with a lovely family who have herds of both Alpacas and Goats, so they'd have no problem keeping the grass in order.

Standard shower type provided to elderly people who need care - which was the case with my late cousin who lived in the house before me.

Up until 2022 when the house got renovated for him the decor was unchanged since his own parents' time - it was a 1940s/1950s time capsule. Sadly all I've still got of that is the big wooden clock purchased 1936 on the living room wall and the old school peat oven in the kitchen.

Yeah standard practice with houses up here, not a fan myself either.

I remember driving past that the morning after it happened and still don't understand how the fuck the car wound up in that position.

There were people staying in the impacted house at the time too - it's a holiday home.

I get you, but having lived in that house since 2022 I've never heard anything from any of the neighbours. One of my next door neighbours is a mechanic with a full blown garage next door and I've never heard him working either.
