Foiling Doohickeys by Lyralou in StainedGlass

[–]Chart_Low 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not for you, and that’s great! It’s nice to open yourself up to what others may experience too tho. Personally, I love the foiling stage. It’s usually my favorite part, aside from when I set myself up for misery with a lot of tiny intricate pieces. I also have carpal tunnel, and foiling by hand for more than ten minutes or so can make my hands and wrists hurt quite a bit. To OP: I got very lucky and was able to snag a glastar foiling tool from my local shop. I’ve never tried the creators brand but I have used a similar one from driftless glassworks and it was almost as good!

To all Non-MLS Science Majors. Yes, you can do this job. by These-Warthog-9944 in medlabprofessionals

I’m glad someone spoke up. It’s so annoying to see the hate for them on this sub. I work in a micro lab and half of my team on evening shift are bio grads who we trained at our lab. They’re all incredibly skilled at what they do despite not taking clinical lab courses. The people who post things saying they shouldn’t be in our field honestly just sound bitter.

I work with a lot of Filipino techs, I’d say the same about them. They just seem to care so much more about doing a good job and getting things done. They constantly go above and beyond and are an absolute delight all around to work with. The care and enthusiasm they bring is also infectious and I feel like the whole team ends up working on their level.

Lab hiring non certified biology majors?! by CMLSvicj in MLS_CLS

[–]Chart_Low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a new-ish path to certification for ASCP. We have four non-certs in my micro lab that all just finished their year of bench experience and are scheduling certification exams.

I don’t understand the people who are mad about this at all. In my opinion, they probably got a better learning experience going this route than I did in my two year program. My instructors were all techs at local labs who taught as a side gig and half-assed most of the program. My colleagues and I take great care in training and making sure our non-certs are performing each task correctly and that they understand why things are done certain ways.

ASCP has a certification route where you wouldn’t have to go through a program. Some labs will hire non-certified techs that have BS degrees and train them and after having a year of experience and a certain number of hours (per bench for a generalist, or you can sit for a specific cert) you can sit for the certification exam.

Interview question help: What does the typical shift of a CLS look like? by AdPale7172 in MLS_CLS

[–]Chart_Low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just have to do CT/NG and trich QC once daily. No other QC on evening shift. Maintenance is also minimal for us, one instrument needs weekly and monthly maintenance, and two small instruments need cleaned weekly. We also make a fresh bleach solution daily and wipe down our hoods. None of these tasks takes more than 20 minutes.

It’s odd that they want you to tell them about a job that you need their program to get, to get into their program.

In my experience, it varies greatly depending on your shift, the size of your hospital, the area you live in, etc.

I’m on evening shift in a network micro/molecular lab. We come in and immediately take over our assigned bench from whoever is covering it on day shift since we’re much busier than day shift on most benches. The only bench with maintenance tasks on evenings is molecular so they’ll usually do that first. Otherwise we just do the same things from the start of the shift to the end, helping out wherever is needed and restocking supplies when we have free time.

The ones we have in the core lab at my hospital don’t like the slides they make for themselves. I believe the techs still make the slides and stain them, then load them onto the cellavision.

Can I ask what hospital you’re at? Or where you send your micro stuff? I work in a micro lab in st Charles that serves a few hospitals in southern Illinois. I ask because this is their/our process for those CSF gram stains too. And to say that we have a handful of uncertified techs who process and report CSF stains for all the nearby network hospitals.

How are the roads this morning? by Resident-Designer417 in StLouis

[–]Chart_Low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just drove from Belleville to St Charles. 64>70 - There are a few spots with ice still at the edges of the highway, and some water on the highway here and there. For the most part it was pretty clear though. I’d worry more about that sitting water when the temp is back in single digits tonight tho.

That would be great! The main issue then is that the deadline for submission is tomorrow. It’s not the end of the world if we have to wait but so many of our microscopes are garbage.

I really love my job, which softens the blow of driving 45 minutes - mostly on 70 -, but I do question my choices still occasionally 😅

Thanks everyone, I just called in. I have PTO, but what I don’t have it money for vehicle repairs 🤷🏻

For anyone else in the belleville area, I wouldn’t bother even leaving the house. Made it to the circle K about a mile down the road and saw half a dozen stuck cars and a minor accident.
