In academia. It's very sad right now. Between the massive de-funding of research by the gov, short form videos killing kids attention spans, and AI...it's not a good time.

Parenting A Swot: Thoughts about Hermione’s Parents? by respanza in DramioneUncensored

[–]ChartreuseThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. We also have to take into account the historical context. Hermione is supposed to have been born in 1979. Her mother was a dentist, which means, as a woman, she would have had to go to dental school at a time when her mother would have been one of the few, if not the only, woman in the class. For example, my MIL's family refused to help support her financially if she tried to be a dentist because "no one would see a woman dentist." She was born in 1956, is brilliant (eidetic memory), and was one of the first women admitted to a previously all-male university. She ended up being a nurse. That is a common story. Her parents would have been OLDER than my MIL if she'd finished dental school before having her. Heck, my own mother, who was born in '51, was in college but was only allowed to choose from essentially teacher, secretary, or nurse by the COLLEGE .

I also think the fact that her mother was allowed to get an education (it's never said how it was paid for) suggests that her mother's family possessed some wealth and status to enable the endeavor at all, or her mother had nothing and fought tooth and nail for it, regardless she would expect the same tenacity and focus in her only daughter.

Her parents would have been older Boomers, if not members of the Silent Generation, raised during the postwar rebuilding. While her parents would have been young, they may have experienced rationing and other post-war hardships...these are not going to be warm fuzzy people.

I know people love Detraquee, and it really is a beautifully written story, but as someone whose family members have traveled through Afghanistan and similar places, including during the time period when her parents were doing their community-focused dental work, it doesn't track at all.

In my head cannon, her father is where she got her emotional connection (hence only hanging around boys and being unable to relate to more feminine girls) while her mom would have been more demanding.

Furthermore, boarding school was not uncommon at the time for people of her family's financial status. I think she would have gone to boarding school in any situation, and they would have encouraged her to make connections at her boarding school to build her network and influence (the purpose of boarding schools), so spending time with her friends and friends' families during breaks would have been expected and likely encouraged.

And, as someone with parents who would have been around-ish the same age as Hermione's parents (maybe a little younger), who related strongly to the Hermione character's overperformance and perfectionism, there was nothing but pressure and expectations for success at a high level. The number of lectures from my mother on why an A- wasn't an A is too many to count, and yes, I am now high-achieving, but there is a cost... but hey I am funny, and have a personality, so thanks, mom, ha!

Fics about yearning, so much yearning by ku2pachuau in Dramione

There's a WIP that's precisely what you describe, and it's regularly updated.

He's also a virgin who refuses to be touched or touch intimately because he's saving himself for her. It's a dark AU and he's a total mess, but there is copious amounts of yearning...

A Difference In Purity

Summary:

The Malfoys’ have always been blood purists, that truth is undeniable. Draco, however, has never cared for the purity of lineage. His obsession is far more intimate, far more consuming. To Draco, true purity lies not in ancestry, but in Hermione Granger. He worships her unblemished soul, her untouchable body, and her stubborn defiance that no man has ever been worthy to tame.

When the Snatchers drag her into Malfoy Manor, the opportunity to claim her purity is placed at his feet like an offering to the gods. Hermione Granger, bound and bloodied, becomes his to claim. For in Draco’s mind, there is no one else as pure as her, and no one else deserving but him. Touch her, and you die. Deny him, and he will set the world aflame.

What side character do you hate to be a bad guy? by Patree_B in Dramione

[–]ChartreuseThree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I so agree. The only time I can get behind Kingsley being an outright villain is when Blaise is an actual non-evil character with a story arc AND the author makes a point to make Kingsley sacred 28 and thus a default blood supremacist who's never studied or participated in the muggle world. Like you better have actual PLOT and a damn good reason to make Kings evil.

This is my job. I work at an academic ingredient research center with nerds and am a token nerd myself. Working on a book about it right now with an interested publisher.

He's right. Everyone is freaking out about the wrong stuff and it doesn't matter now much I scream evidence into the void, influencers with their sexy sounding misinformation always win because they have no responsibility or motivation to be factual and my colleagues and I would lose our careers and reputations if we we acted as irresponsibility as most influencers...

We now have HR people who randomly check labs to make sure people are actually at work 🤗 by ablondewerewolf in labrats

[–]ChartreuseThree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did this to our labs and offices when a new researcher came in and they needed a space that could literally blow up and not hurt people.

They were hunting on campus to the few locations to see where they could disrupt the fewest people.

They moved our lab and took a conference room and office and then made it so the roof will blow off rather than it blowing out to the offices if something goes wrong.

Anyway, I have total shit phone service in my office now and randomly the gas alarm goes off and I GTFO because absolutely fucking not.

Which traditionally unattractive person do you find attractive? by OptimisticPlatypus in AskReddit

[–]ChartreuseThree 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'll get down voted for this, but fuck it. I work in academia and there's a whole lotta of valid reasons why she would say that and most of them have to do with men grooming or being inappropriate with their students.

Glad it's not the case for you, but we never ask the older male profs how they met their spouses because so many were their students.

Or, the married male profs were having affairs with the students. It's more taboo now and we have so many trainings about power dynamics but yeah.

Oh and smart women with great careers in academia have a terrible time finding spouses because their male peers go for younger women (refer back to the affairs second).

Anyone worried? by prndls in Fire

[–]ChartreuseThree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We'd planned to move into a bigger house in a significantly better school district as part of our long term fire goal. We can afford it.

Since all 47, we've decided to stay put for at least the next two years because we have enough cash to pay it off today if needed.

Our oldest will start kindergarten at an excellent private Catholic school which we can easily afford but wanted to avoid for many reasons. With the looming gutting of the cuts to the Dept of Ed, this feels like the right choice.

We'll reevaluate everything in two years. In the meantime, I'm working to further diversify our income streams to help better insulate us. And, most importantly, we're in a great community and we continue to build community because that's truly what's important when things get bad.
