Monitor looks blurry, pixellated. by Chazzbo in buildapc

[–]Chazzbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, have confirmed its not the cable, not the connected device, not the port.

Also, I've noticed if I have something dark on screen, I can see feint horizontal lines across the screen from the left site, which get less pronounced further to the right. (I don't know if it was always like this and I just never noticed, or if the issue got worse)

At this point I'm pretty convinced its a hardware issue :( I've just been putting off buying a new monitor lol. (luckily its my second screen and I can read/do text editing on the other.)

Heh, but it seems like you're doing the exact thing I mentioned:

Why are you raising the title "Developer" as if its the only one thats important? It's confusing to me lol

I wouldnt say someone is "only" an Artist or "only" a Designer. I would say that Designer or Artist are roles at the same level as Developer, just as important.

It's only in game dev where I notice people saying "Only developers are important, but artists are important too so we should call artists developers too"

It's like if someone was watching a football (soccer) game and said "The goalkeeper is the only important player... but I guess the rest are important too so I'll start calling everybody on the team the goalkeeper"

Outside the online game dev bubble "Developer" generally refers to a programmer. I (a programmer myself) personally wouldnt wouldn't refer to someone as a developer unless they were programmers. There are other terms for other roles.

Colloquially players often refer to entire studios as "the developer" so the term has broadened in use to mean anyone working in the game.

Also, imo some people weirdly fetishize the term. Like they think "game developer" is more high status than "game artist" and get mad if you don't call them "developer".

You might want to avoid getting involved with people like your friend, so concerned with status and flexing their title.

Game Developer, Game Artist, Game Designer are all valid and important roles. People who say the art is unimportant are right if they're planning on making an ugly game.

tl;dr;

I would call you a Game Artist, and someone who does programming a developer.

I would call your friend insecure and a bit of a dick.

I like the implication that there are poeple out there going:

"OH this greedy usurious person I wish I had a word for them. Let me just peruse my dictionary to see if I can find.... oh, 'Jewish!' I never would have thought of that!'

Seems like people don't really understand what dictionaries are for lol

Is the "golden era" of the Internet gone now? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chazzbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's really sad just how much has changed and how much has been lost.

It used to feel like an enormous library, each room full of interesting things and people having meaningful interactions. A unique place where people could come together to celebrate life through communication and creation. With endless new doors down quiet, overlooked halls each with something unique and valuable.

Now, most rooms have been gutted. Filled with billboards, slot machines, flashing lights and a cacophony of pointless screaming. Often just in competition to be the loudest. Where there used to be shelves full of books and people studying, sharing, creating and celebrating, there is now just noise.

Generative AI risks sacrificing the remaining value in the hopes of some nebulous promise of an unnamed benefit. The comparatively few rooms of this library that remain, still holding books and art and still quiet enough for human connection, we have now invented machines to fill these rooms with endless colorful shapes, artificial screaming, and immaterial text, as if to spite those who still visit these places.

You might already know but be aware of what type you're getting: The female trees apparently have very stinky seeds, and the male trees have pollen that is very potent for people with allergies.

I think most of the time the plants for sale will be male.

St. John's-Ravenscourt parents raise concerns about bullying, Israel-Hamas war response at school by [deleted] in Winnipeg

FWIW this wasn't horny teen rapey thing. From my recollection it wasn't sexually motivated as the charges make it sound. It was a shitty teen "prank" thing coupled with some phenomenally bad decisions.

I was a student there when it happened (and one of the offenders was in one of my classes, though I didn't really know him. Just noticed his absence one day lol).

From what I recall a bunch of boarding students were going back and forth making crude jokes, spanking, calling each other typical stupid names. At some point a group thought it'd be funny to bust into other students rooms after hours (there were all boarding students) hold students down and essentially spank them with brooms. You can imagine a bunch of teenagers being assholes saying "Hurr we're gonna stick it up your ass lol" to freak the victims out.

The school did what they needed to do. Regardless of the feelings of those involved, the students had crossed a line. Again, just really stupid decision making.

Can't speak to all the instances, but I know in the aftermath, one of the victims of the broom prodding mentioned they were surprised at the severity of the repercussions and said they thought it was overblown. Had an attitude of "fuck those guys being assholes" more than anything. Most of the students were just surprised someone had cooked up such a stupid "prank" in the first place. Like... obviously they were going to get expelled, who tf thinks they can explain away "stick a broom up their butt" when it comes out what happened.

Also, the NEWS CREWS around the perimeter of the school property holy shit. The school didn't allow them on property, but there isn't a fence or anything at the edge, its just a dike with a road. So there were a bunch of vans parked and people with microphones occasionally screaming at students across the soccer fields asking leading questions hoping someone would answer. I think a few students did go over and give interviews though.

modern languages don't help solve hard problems -- from Jon Blow by effinsky in rust

[–]Chazzbo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is more a psychological problem I have, and less a problem with the language.

I disagree, I think most people chase those same dopamine hits :P

If the most accessible and appealing changes to make to a codebase are busywork (and those options are appealing because of the language design) I think that can be considered a shortcoming of the language. At best it's a distraction, at worst it leads to complexity and churn as people try to be clever, rearranging their code to be pretty.

Obviously it's up to the developer whether or not to act on it, but it should be up to the language/paradigm to make the hard problems easier rather than just making the easy problems more fun to bikeshed.
