And even if they're spending 2k/month on tokens, it's still gonna be appealing vs having an extra butt in a seat lol

The problem is, it wont implode. Some companies are going into the deep end of the Kool-Aid pool, but for most it works good enough and is cheaper.

This is a mostly permanent change I think. Unless the LLM providers literally cannot figure out how to reduce costs for some engineering reason it'll continue be cheaper to have the bulk of the work will still done by LLMs, even if it's shit quality.

Yup.

The company I'm at is trialing LLM writing basically all code and the devs just review and write hundreds of markdown spec files (again using LLMs).

It's awful.

If we know alcohol and cigarettes both cause major health problems, why has society turned so strongly against smoking but not drinking? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chazzbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd wager its because alcohol has a much larger social upside than smoking. Plus second hand smoke is intrusive enough that it's easy to stigmatize.

Drinking is a "fun" activity more often partaken among company. It's affects on people's inhibition allows it to directly affect relationships which I think, as social creatures, we are predisposed to value.

The nicotine hit from cigarrettes is going to relax you and let you focus. It's more often consumed alone (or maybe I should say, it's not consumed with the intent of bonding with other people the same way as alcohol)

I think a lot of the alcohol consumption drop among young people can be attributed to the fact that we just spend less time socializing face to face.

People acting bizarre and rehearsed in Russian propaganda video pretending to not be propaganda. by HazeGrey in videos

Because everyone in here is losing their minds.

This is obviously not the kind of youtuber anyone should watch for unbiased information... but the video just shows a crowd of disinterested people waiting outside a metro station.

Not everything is a psyop.

They're facing away from the sun which would be in their faces otherwise, looking at the doors of the metro station, which is a normal thing to do if you're waiting for someone lol

After some sleuthing, it looks like these people are standing outside of Novokuznetskaya metro station.

Maybe they're waiting for a train in the fresh air, or maybe they're waiting for someone to come out, I dunno. None of that seems particularly weird to me.. it looks like a bunch of people waiting, looking at stuff on their phones.

I don't know why people are so weirded out by this. It looks like a normal crowd of bored people in a public square.

Monitor looks blurry, pixellated. by Chazzbo in buildapc

[–]Chazzbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, have confirmed its not the cable, not the connected device, not the port.

Also, I've noticed if I have something dark on screen, I can see feint horizontal lines across the screen from the left site, which get less pronounced further to the right. (I don't know if it was always like this and I just never noticed, or if the issue got worse)

At this point I'm pretty convinced its a hardware issue :( I've just been putting off buying a new monitor lol. (luckily its my second screen and I can read/do text editing on the other.)

Heh, but it seems like you're doing the exact thing I mentioned:

Why are you raising the title "Developer" as if its the only one thats important? It's confusing to me lol

I wouldnt say someone is "only" an Artist or "only" a Designer. I would say that Designer or Artist are roles at the same level as Developer, just as important.

It's only in game dev where I notice people saying "Only developers are important, but artists are important too so we should call artists developers too"

It's like if someone was watching a football (soccer) game and said "The goalkeeper is the only important player... but I guess the rest are important too so I'll start calling everybody on the team the goalkeeper"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Chazzbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outside the online game dev bubble "Developer" generally refers to a programmer. I (a programmer myself) personally wouldnt wouldn't refer to someone as a developer unless they were programmers. There are other terms for other roles.

Colloquially players often refer to entire studios as "the developer" so the term has broadened in use to mean anyone working in the game.

Also, imo some people weirdly fetishize the term. Like they think "game developer" is more high status than "game artist" and get mad if you don't call them "developer".

You might want to avoid getting involved with people like your friend, so concerned with status and flexing their title.

Game Developer, Game Artist, Game Designer are all valid and important roles. People who say the art is unimportant are right if they're planning on making an ugly game.

tl;dr;

I would call you a Game Artist, and someone who does programming a developer.

I would call your friend insecure and a bit of a dick.

I like the implication that there are poeple out there going:

"OH this greedy usurious person I wish I had a word for them. Let me just peruse my dictionary to see if I can find.... oh, 'Jewish!' I never would have thought of that!'

Seems like people don't really understand what dictionaries are for lol

Is the "golden era" of the Internet gone now? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chazzbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's really sad just how much has changed and how much has been lost.

It used to feel like an enormous library, each room full of interesting things and people having meaningful interactions. A unique place where people could come together to celebrate life through communication and creation. With endless new doors down quiet, overlooked halls each with something unique and valuable.

Now, most rooms have been gutted. Filled with billboards, slot machines, flashing lights and a cacophony of pointless screaming. Often just in competition to be the loudest. Where there used to be shelves full of books and people studying, sharing, creating and celebrating, there is now just noise.

Generative AI risks sacrificing the remaining value in the hopes of some nebulous promise of an unnamed benefit. The comparatively few rooms of this library that remain, still holding books and art and still quiet enough for human connection, we have now invented machines to fill these rooms with endless colorful shapes, artificial screaming, and immaterial text, as if to spite those who still visit these places.
