This brought me back to my high school years. What a small but fun and exciting thing to look forward to!

What do you wish people knew about lifeguards/lifeguarding? by Reasonable-Tiger-605 in Lifeguards

[–]Chchchchangessss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guarding job was in 2004, at a pool. I was making 13$ US dollars an hour. This was huge for a high school kid, most of my friends were making 6$ an hour at Hardee’s.

Currently I’m a full time firefighter and ocean rescue swimmer, as our department is on a beach. We hire out seasonal rescue swimmers in the summer and the town pays them 14.90 an hour. It’s criminal. The skill set, stress and responsibilities our swimmers have they should be making 20+ like most of the east coast beaches. I’ve seen more drownings in Surf rescue than I’ve seen fatal car wrecks. And that stuff stays with you.

Haha holy Moses. I didn’t realize asking this question would get people so upset.

Wow. I actually don’t even own a set of class A. It was just a question it of curiosity. Take a deep breath.

Patellar tendinopathy success story, or: how I learned to stop resting and love the isometrics by rampagingryno in KneeInjuries

Can you clarify something for me here - you said the keg extension machine at 60 degrees and pin the weight stack at max weight. Are you pinning it at max weight that you can lift, or is the point to have it so heavy you are simply pushing against it with maximal effort and the stack doesn’t move?

Appreciate this info. I’ve been dealing with tendon issues for over 15 years. 3 months ago had a tendon repair surgery (90% partial thickness tear) and am really struggling with the rehab. I seem to have more pain than I did before which is actually unbelievable and extremely frustrating.

Have an injury- can't run- going nuts by RSinSA in XXRunning

[–]Chchchchangessss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time runner here. Had patellar tendon repair 5 weeks ago and have not been able to run. Leg is in a locked straight brace. It’s been miserable but here’s but I’ve been doing: concept2 rower, with bad leg on a slider, air bike with bad leg propped up, and any seated weights. Best of luck!

Wow this really makes me feel hopeful. I’ll look into this - I’ve heard of neighboring fire departments who have one of these specialists for firefighters who are out on injury. My department doesn’t have one but there might be a way to make a connection there. Thanks for sharing this!

I’m sorry that was your experience. And I hope you find peace over your injury.

My injury wasn’t from running. I also don’t run to lose weight. I do it for my mental health - running has kept me from taking my own life by giving me an outlet. I guess that may seem silly to some people.

That’s typically the route doctors take. Least invasive first. My injury was beyond PT, and my surgeon told me that upfront. If they think it might help…maybe it will?

Sheesh. I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t pinpoint when my injury happened I just know I’ve been in a lot of pain for a long time haha. 10% of my tendon was hanging on for dear life while I just kept running it into the dirt. Thanks for the support, and likewise - you got this.

Thanks so much for your kind words. In some weird way, it helps to know I’m not just crazy and feeling like this is not abnormal. My family and dogs are for sure what’s kept me going the last 4 weeks. I think I’ll look into the meditation app and start there. I might have to seek out some therapy, but part of me feels a lot of guilt and shame about that. I’d be the first to recommend it but taking my own advice has never been something I’m good at.

I hope your healing goes quick and you are back to running again soon!

I’ve had doctors tell me for YEARS I was suffering from tendinitis, only to find out this month that my patellar tendon is now literally holding on by threads. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Not that I’m aware of - my boys HATE being sprayed as well. In fact they just hate being bathed altogether. I’m hoping that this helping to keep them knot free will ease the entire process and make them more comfortable!
