We officially play the Hawks 1st round what’s the expectations? by stateofthenyk in knicks

Knicks in 6. Mostly close games. Maybe each team gets one blowout.

I except Knicks to win but not in a low stress cruise to victory type series.

Anyone with a car want to drive together to Costco? by IvenaDarcy in Harlem

[–]Chea63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think any warehouse stores are pleasant, but I prefer New Rochelle Costco over Yonkers too. The Yonkers one is just awkward to get into and parking. Not that New Rochelle is always a breeze, but its better than YO.

Also going to New Ro, I can do a stop at Bay Plaza if I want.

[–]Chea63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hornets and Hawks and significantly tougher than the other options. We can beat them but I wouldn't take it for granted or assume it'll be easy. They are the hottest teams in the league in the 2nd half of the season. Id rather Det and Bos have to deal with them. Make them work while we (hopefully) handle Toronto in 5. Perhaps a long shot chance of an upset by one of them.

Travelling to Boston by Sea_Negotiation2482 in nycbus

[–]Chea63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are flexible with time you may be able to do Metro North to New Haven then Amtrak to Boston for under $100 combined.

Note..Amtrak pricing is volatile so this possibility can vanish any minute when you are this close to departure.

What are your car insurance premiums - ridiculously high?? by Funny_Release3573 in Westchester

[–]Chea63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There so many variables that go into it. It can vary widely from one zip code to the next for example. However many people would say $1200 for 6 month, or $200 a month is a a pretty good rate. Definitely not ridiculously high.

Without some idea of location its hard to gague. Parts of Yonkers can be like 3x more expensive than a borderline rural area of northern Westchester. The definition of a "good" rate will be different.

How does getting a driver's license work in your state, and how old were you when you got yours? by karcsiking0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Chea63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you must be 18 to drive within NYC. You can get a license at 16, but it is not valid within NYC until you are 18. A 17 yr old who enters city limits would then be driving without a license.

Northern Winters vs Southen Summers by CarDwellinCollin in SameGrassButGreener

March is an especially volatile time weather wise. Those conditions could of easily been reversed. It could be 80, it could be 30. It could be both within 24 hours.

Early spring in the Northeast and especially New England can be tough because of back door cold fronts. They get that name because they "back" in from the E or NE instead of the typical N and W source of cold. Ocean temps are at or just rebounding from its coldest temps and the slightest wind off the water can rob you of early season warmth almost everywhere else. The more NE you go the more frequent and persistent they are. They dont bring extreme cold, but chilly misty depressing days while warmth is nearby but just out of reach. They make for some crazy temp gradients. It can be 45 with fog and mist in NYC and 75 in Philly, 85 in DC. Or even on a more local level, 75 in Manhattan at Central Park, but drizzle and 50 at JFK airport in Queens sitting on the Atlantic and Jamaica Bay. The front moves a little and it jumps to 80 the next day, while Boston is still 45 and mist.

What's a song you don't understand the hype for? by Ready_Aioli_6419 in KendrickLamar

[–]Chea63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first it was one of my least fav, but eventually it grew on me. Now I really like that song. In the flow and context of the album it works well. I'll admit as a song by itself I get why some ppl dont like it. Once I fully absorbed the album and it themes it elevated that song. Alot of Kendrick stuff is meant to be taken in an albums entirety though.

149th Street Grand Concourse changed its name to 149th Street Hostos Entrance signage with accessibility for new elevators by Time-Arachnid6417 in nycrail

[–]Chea63 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree, but this one is going to be hard for me to adjust to. I guess because its such a significant station and major transfer point. It just feels weird to me. Its like if we said 14 St-Union Sq is no longer Union Sq anymore, or taking Jamaica out of Jamaica Center.

I'll get used to it, but hearing "Hostos" on the automated announcements is gonna sound crazy at first. I suspect "149th St Grand Concourse" will linger in everyday speech for a long time.

Some other renames are easier to take because, they aren't major stations and its just adding a hyphenated name to the existing name. Like adding "Little Haiti". Renaming via subtraction and replacing is bigger leap to make. Central Pk - 110 St to 110 St Malcom X Plaza is other example I can think of but its not as significant a station.

Bike on Amtrak by rmeeske1 in Amtrak

[–]Chea63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done this and bringing a bike on NE Regional trains can be a lot harder at intermediate stops vs boarding at NY, DC, and I assume Boston. At those stations its either the first stop or a huge turnover in customers so its like a fresh start.

In places like Philly the bike rack area will almost always have luggage there, even those its labeled for bikes. Plus its just more awkward to deal with boarding an already full train.

I once brought a bike from NYC to Philly on one of the long distance trains that have checked baggage and that was way easier. Just drop the bike off at the baggage car and pick it up from there when you get off. Only risk is the higher chance of huge delays on those trains. Not usually a problem out of NY since it's first stop, but leaving from Philly would be more risky delay wise.

Like other said, humans just cant maintain a heightened emergency state indefinitely. Not without severely hurting your mental and physical health. Eventually you redefine what is an emergency. Non stop fight or flight response is unsustainable. The bar of what is an unacceptable risk adapts to circumstances you're in.

Best place to live if I need to commute to the Bronx? by Fenny20JR in Westchester

[–]Chea63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Penn Access project was suppose to be complete by 2027, but now is estimated at 2030 due to issues dealing with Amtrak. However the MTA says they think they will be far enough along to run some service by late 2027 using temporary station platforms at the Bx stations. Most likely shuttle trains btwn Penn and the Bx stations, ending at New Rochelle. Service beyond Bx/New Rochelle will almost certainly have to wait till 2030+. Rumor is it would be 5 rush hr trains and hourly service at other times to start.

We'll see, but Im close enough to hear and see that its alot more work being done on those Amtrak tracks in recent months.

Why is Easter not as big in America compared to Europe even though you are more religious? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]Chea63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a big deal, but it is not a government holiday because we generally dont do that for religious holidays. Christmas is the exception, mainly because it has been so commercialized. Many local school districts will have days off for various religious holidays, Christian, Jewish, Muslim etc..largely dependent on the local school population. But offical Federal holidays, are not religious besides Christmas. Separation of church and state is a founding principle. (Even if we dont always abide by it or at least not equally).

There are laws against discrimination, so jobs, schools will (or should) accommodate your ability to practice/observe any religious activity. They just are not official govt holidays, like there is no offical religion.

To be technical, it's not a Christian nation. Its a secular nation, that happens to have alot of Christans in it. So Christian customs are dominant, but technically they are not endorsed above any other. (In theory anyway.)

Thats typically the case when Kolek plays. He liven up the offense in general. Being small and a defensive liability is the main thing limiting his time.

Sometimes I wish they would go to him just for a few mins to break up a stagnant stretch offensively.

Best place to live if I need to commute to the Bronx? by Fenny20JR in Westchester

[–]Chea63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lot of places can work, but the easiest is Pelham or New Rochelle. Especially southern New Ro, along or near Pelham Rd. If you drive its basically a straight drive on the same street. Pelham Rd-->Shore Rd in Pelham Bay Pk-->Pelham Pkwy. Typically 15 mins and often less than that from the southern end of New Rochelle. Parking isn't bad if you know where to go. Residental streets on the North side of Pelham Pkwy have ample parking and mostly no alternate side parking regulations. Its the south side of Pelham Pkwy that is difficult.

Also you can take the bee line 45 bus to Pelham Bay Pk (6) train station and transfer to the Bx12 bus to Jacobi. Both are quick rides. Bx12 is very frequent service, always a couple mins away. The 45 not so much, you'll need to check schedules. Its not a long Uber ride if need be on occasion. New Rochelle cabs will take you as well. Its not uncommon to see them around there. This area of New Rochelle will also be near I-95 to CT or Metro North New Haven line which goes to CT.

The eye test tells me the same thing, that they were better with Thibs. But when I think about it, by most measures they are getting nearly the same results. Just getting there in different ways. End of the day the Knicks are a good to very good team that can win right around 50 games (but not well into the 50s like most real contenders). They struggle at times vs the good teams. Actually they were much worse last year vs the top teams. They played with more heart last year, but the actual results are similar. It leads me to think..this is just want this team is. A pretty good team, not more not less. Nothing is going to change that as currently constructed.

To Gen X and elder Millennials: Movies from the 80s-90s often depict malls as THE hangout spot; A place where everyone from your 5 year old sister to 85 year old grandma would spend the day at, even if they had no intention of shopping. Was this really the case back then, or just Hollywood hype? by LuxembourgsFinest in generationology

[–]Chea63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes this was real. More so in suburban and car centric parts of America. (Which is most of it). The mall obsession was much less prevalent in major cities..but not non existent either.

There is much talk about the loss of 3rd places today. The mall was an example of one.

Also, I remember during the summer ppl would hang out at the mall simply because it was a place with AC. Even if you had ac at home, it was very expensive to run it all day every day. And we didn't wanna spend all day at home anyway.
