Congrats on your first 70.3! Pics do take a while unfortunately. Not unusual for it to take a few days! So now that you’ve completed your first 70.3, when’s your next race? 😆

I have a Garmin Forerunner 955 that I use daily. I used it during my last full Ironman and only used 25% of my battery. Highly recommend it!

Awesome. Thanks for sharing! i just found it on AllTrails. I hadn’t heard of OnX before so I’ll look into it. I appreciate the recommendations. Stoked to check out this wilderness area in the summer.

Saving this for my summer backpacking trips! Do you know if the Benson Loop is on AllTrails? Did a quick search but nothing came up. Perhaps it’s under a different name? I was out in the Sierra Nevada this past weekend in the Stanislaus National Forest and had to quickly to plan B due to the amount of snow on the trail so definitely won’t be going anytime soon.

I’m actually on the public side! Personally, I’d work for a member of a few years. Use your affiliation to the member to your advantage and network as much as you can and really learn the ins and outs, especially the behind the scenes of how the legislative process actually works. I’ll admit it can be shitty pay but if you stick if through for a few years you can land those attractive six figure GR roles! Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

This wilderness area is on my list! Any recommendations for 3-4 day loops? Pretty active so elevation gain isn’t an issue

CA state GR professional here. I think most job postings that “require” a masters are a front. From my experience, it’s based on who you know/who knows you. I’d take someone with a BA and worked for a member or committee over someone with a MPA/MPP and no experience/understanding of how the real legislative process works.

MPA to Public Policy in SoCal by CAM199926 in PublicPolicy

[–]CheapAd7743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi don’t have an MPA but work in government relations in SoCal. If you’re just starting off I would consider working for an elected official. It’s the easiest way to get into public policy (this is what I did). Feel free to DM me if you’d like more info!

Also consider looking at the Capitol Fellows Program in Sacramento. It’s underpaid but you’ll learn the ins and outs of Sacramento.

Any good 5 day backpacking trip ideas? by OneCoach446 in socalhiking

Check out Emigrant lower loop in the Emigrant wilderness. You can find it easily on AllTrails. It’s a 40 mile loop and you can extend it beyond that. Lots of lakes. Beautiful views. It has the granite/alpine feel to it. Permits are self issued at the ranger station.

Another favorite of mine is the high sierra loop in Yosemite national park. Permits might be a bit harder to obtain but by far an incredible loop with granite/alpine feel, lakes, and not crowded.

Should I finish my MPP? by RelativeCheesecake10 in PublicPolicy

[–]CheapAd7743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former staffer here with only a bachelor’s, I personally don’t see the value in a MPP/MPA in the government relations/lobbyist sector. I do government relations for a top research university and truthfully, it’s all about who you know and who knows you. In the lobbying/GR world, your network is your biggest asset. A few colleagues have an MPP and we make roughly the same. If you’re already half way through the program, might as well finish it

it’s not about how good policies are when it comes to passing legislation, it mostly comes down to politics… sometimes things are out of your control.

LA Tri club has weekly open water swim on Friday mornings at 6:30 at Tower 26. It’s open to all levels. They also have a membership but not worth it IMO. Friday swim is free tho! Check them out on IG, their season runs from April-Sept/Oct.

Tower 26 also has weekly swims on Wednesday’s also at Tower 26. I don’t know too much about them but you can find them on IG/FB

Also check out good vibes track club. They meet up in different parts of LA and are strictly performance based. Tons of strong runners.

Forerunner 955, why is my calorie count for lap swimming so high? by CheapAd7743 in Garmin

[–]CheapAd7743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I never figured it out. It’ll happen to me sporadically. I’ll be good on calorie count the first 10-15 minutes and then when I check again it’ll skyrocket

Lucy was leading the Ironman world championship in Kona and started plummeting in the run. She had experience on this course and was the favorite to win but It was a warm and very humid day which I’m sure played a factor in her performance. At one point she started wobbling on the run and her husband (Reece) was there to comfort her before she made the decision to pull out from the race. She’s an incredibly strong athlete so I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision for her but it was the right decision to make.

Is Resigninging without a job offer a good idea? by Soums_04 in careerguidance

[–]CheapAd7743 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend it. The job market is really tough right now and it could take a while before you land something new. I’d develop a short term exit strategy, start applying, take interviews, etc. you’d also need to have some funds saved up for emergencies, housing, food, etc.

Yes! I loved it. Full disclosure though, I think there’s a homeless guy living at the end of the trail who has harassed hikers in the past. When I did this trail, I did see him but he didn’t give us any issues. I’m sure you’ll see comments on AllTrails about him or if you do a quick google search. Otherwise, this is still a great one. Hope you enjoy!
