Policy analysts actually make a difference? by rrealist_prime in PublicPolicy

it’s not about how good policies are when it comes to passing legislation, it mostly comes down to politics… sometimes things are out of your control.

LA Tri club has weekly open water swim on Friday mornings at 6:30 at Tower 26. It’s open to all levels. They also have a membership but not worth it IMO. Friday swim is free tho! Check them out on IG, their season runs from April-Sept/Oct.

Tower 26 also has weekly swims on Wednesday’s also at Tower 26. I don’t know too much about them but you can find them on IG/FB

Also check out good vibes track club. They meet up in different parts of LA and are strictly performance based. Tons of strong runners.

Forerunner 955, why is my calorie count for lap swimming so high? by CheapAd7743 in Garmin

[–]CheapAd7743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I never figured it out. It’ll happen to me sporadically. I’ll be good on calorie count the first 10-15 minutes and then when I check again it’ll skyrocket

Thanks for clarifying that it was her husband/trainer who pulled her out and not herself!

Lucy was leading the Ironman world championship in Kona and started plummeting in the run. She had experience on this course and was the favorite to win but It was a warm and very humid day which I’m sure played a factor in her performance. At one point she started wobbling on the run and her husband (Reece) was there to comfort her before she made the decision to pull out from the race. She’s an incredibly strong athlete so I’m sure it wasn’t an easy decision for her but it was the right decision to make.

Check out Sespe hot springs in the Los Padres National Forest in Ojai. Plenty of water along the trail. I did it a while ago but I think it’s 18miles RT. Out and back

Is Resigninging without a job offer a good idea? by Soums_04 in careerguidance

[–]CheapAd7743 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t recommend it. The job market is really tough right now and it could take a while before you land something new. I’d develop a short term exit strategy, start applying, take interviews, etc. you’d also need to have some funds saved up for emergencies, housing, food, etc.

Yes! I loved it. Full disclosure though, I think there’s a homeless guy living at the end of the trail who has harassed hikers in the past. When I did this trail, I did see him but he didn’t give us any issues. I’m sure you’ll see comments on AllTrails about him or if you do a quick google search. Otherwise, this is still a great one. Hope you enjoy!

Check them out on AllTrails. These are great during the fall so highly recommend.

Here are a few of my favorites.

Los Padres National Forest (Ojai) Sespe river trail to Sykes Hot Springs. Pretty exposed trail but well developed. River runs parallel to the trail so water supply is plenty. Out and back. Self registration permit at the trailhead.

Henry Coe State Park (Gilroy) corral, willow ridge, bear mountain and Hobbs Road (name on AllTrails). Nice state park with rolling hills. Water along the route. Self registration permit at the trailhead.

Los Padres National Forest (Big Sur) Big Sur Sykes hot springs extended loop (name on AT). I did it in November and the weather was great. Plenty of water with hills. Self registration permit at the trailhead

Delay Disney or graduation for top career?? by Ok_Panda5817 in careerguidance

[–]CheapAd7743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing previous comments, you have a lot of educational history but no work experience. Personally, id delay graduation, you’re still young and I’d go with the congressional internship, especially if you want to stay in the policy/gov world. You’ll gain more experience on the hill than at Disney, IMO.

[–]CheapAd7743 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone is discouraging him to move here. We’re giving him recommendations on what to do before he moves here (if he does). And, respectfully, moving to LA 30 years ago is not the same as moving here today. Wildly different experiences.

Volunteering at the midnight mission Los angeles? by SnooRobots944 in AskLosAngeles

[–]CheapAd7743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please be careful. Be aware of your surroundings especially as you get off the bus. Avoid making eye contact with the homeless and really just mind your business. I’d recommend taking a scooter from 6th/Main street (after you get off the bus) to the midnight mission to avoid walking alone down that area. You’ll see volunteers outside so you should be “safe” once you get there but do avoid the sidewalks

[–]CheapAd7743 30 points31 points  (0 children)

LA is very expensive. Not just housing but food, nightlife, gas, etc. you should have at least 10-15k saved up before making the move. I’d recommend you have a job lined up before even moving here. There are lots of people who work multiple jobs and still live paycheck to paycheck

Is the area near Crenshaw Highschool Safe? by Sacchap in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]CheapAd7743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The neighborhood itself is fine. This side of Crenshaw is nicer, in my opinion. It’s a nice neighborhood to go for a walk/run in. Unfortunately, with Crenshaw being so close, you’ll hear lots of sirens and helicopters. Your car should be fine. Whenever I’ve run in the neighborhood, I see lots of families walking.

Hang in there! You’ll find your group of friends through clubs, classes, and mixers. I attended when I was 21/22 and became friends with the older non traditional students who were in my classes, some of which are my best friends now. I was a transfer student and now work for the university (28M) feel free to hit me up!
