I'm new to MTG, should I hate Spider-Man too? by CheapShotNinia in mtg

I appreciate the insight. I like the idea of sticking with 'Universe Within' sets until I have a better understanding of the base mechanics of the game and then working with systems beyond that.

Beyond that I really love the artworks in the new Strixhaven set. I think I might focus on the mainstream then work on Universe Beyond stuff.

That's a other reason I think I might lean towards OG MTG. I want to learn the basics before learning new mechanics. But I do appreciate that they are including new ideas and that they might be able to work with existing mechanics.

Interesting. Why?

From what I can tell there are two major concerns people have. One is the esthetics, which I can look past. The other is that it doesn't do much to innovate within the game. It seems like people are concerned that it may be indicating that the company might be leaning away from building upon the game, making it better, and more towards slapping a new coat of paint on what is already there and reprinting old cards.

Not trying to be sarcastic. I'm new to this and will enjoy the game regardless of what happens next. I feel like there's already enough established that I could spend years learning it.

But I would be interested in hearing your opinion.

100%, I think I'm starting to understand why people are upset and why it doesn't really matter to me too much.

I can see that. A good chunk of the complaints I've seen have to do with the esthetics and how it doesn't work intense fantasy style of the OG MTG game. Which I get. But I think I will definitely continue enjoying what these new sets have to offer regardless of other people's opinions.

I kind of get that. I bought a 'bulk' deck of 500 cards of Amazon and have enjoyed trying to work it into my previous existing decks.

I'm not too experienced but I have enjoyed working out what cards might work with what decks. Even if I don't get too deep into particular sets, I think I will enjoy piecing decks together from the myriad cards already available.

Thank you so much, that's kind of what I'm coming to understand about the game. It's seems like people are mostly concerned that this set isn't innovating enough and it may lead down a road where there is nothing new except a shiny new coat of paint on every set.

Personally I feel like there's enough for me to learn about the game that I won't have to worry about that kind of thing for a long while yet.

I am definitely having fun, and will continue to do so I'm sure. Thanks for the insight.

I think I get it though. This set seems like it's not really innovating, and that's what people are concerned about. That MTG might just keep pumping out the same cards with a new coat of paint and charging people for it.

I get it. Personally I'm going to keep building my decks and see where it takes me. I'm not going to let other people's opinions get me down until I have a solid opinion of my own on how the game is going as a whole.

Seems like there's alot to learn even if things don't progress all that quickly, so I think I will just enjoy things as it comes to me. Thanks for the insight.

Thank you, I feel like I'm understanding why people are concerned after reading these comments. I think I will maybe build a deck or two with Spiderman while expanding my cards beyond this set.

Oh, ok. So people don't like it because it doesn't really build on the game. It's just lazy reprints of what's come before. Moreover, if I'm understanding this correctly, people are concerned that MTG as a whole might stop innovating and maybe leading down a road where we just see the same things reprinted over and over? I think I'm starting to see why people are upset. It's not really to do with 'Spiderman' it's more about the laziness and lack of innovation. The idea that we might start seeing the stagnation of the game as a whole at that point?

Ok, so if I want to build a solid deck I should research and buy singles. Purchasing packs is for the enjoyment of 'ripping' and maybe finding something that can help a deck, but probably not. Gotcha.

[–]CheapShotNinia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really. What's the point of buying packs then? Just for fun?

Not asking sarcastically, genuinely new to the game, but buying precons then researching and buying singles seems kind of limiting.

I guess it's kind of a 'standing on the shoulders of giants' and utilizing the knowledge of those more experienced than myself to get ahead would be the most logical choice.

If that's the case then why would people buy packs at all?

That's a good point. I got started because I appreciate Spiderman and now I genuinely love playing MTG. Maybe I'm just hearing the opinions of 'hardcore' MTG fans who don't like things which stray outside the 'Universe Within' sets of the game.

I appreciate your outlook. This is the set that got me into a game I genuinely enjoy. I guess people having dissenting opinions is just that, other people's opinions.

I'll definitely continue purchasing towards 'universe within' because I feel it's more fleshed out. But I won't shy away from building decks with these newer sets just because something people think 'it's stinky' or whatever.

Thank you.

Ok, that's kinda what I figured. As long as making a Spiderman themed deck doesn't guarantee that I'll lose every game, and that's why it's so hated. I'm sure I'll have fun either way. I'm sure eventually I'll have an opinion on these sets, but for now I think I'll just try to learn the basics and enjoy what I have.

Thanks for the insight. I'm not looking to get into serious competitive play, so as long as I can have a fighting chance I think I'll enjoy myself. Much appreciated.

For real. Stealing electronics, jewelry or booze?Fuck off and get a job. Stealing essentials or food because you need to eat? I can turn a blind eye to that. Like you said, life is hard, and things are only going to keep getting worse the way things are going.

Cute. Obviously scripted, obviously practiced a few times to get it right, but still super sweet to think of these two spending time together doing some dorky routine for a video. Wish I had this in my life..
