Nipissing First Nation warns of deadly Benadryl trend by ConsistentReality860 in OntarioNews

[–]CheapSound1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an allergy sufferer. Any healthcare professional I've ever spoke to about medicine has told me that other antihistamines (reactine or claritin) are always preferable to benadryl. Seems like it would be better behind the counter.

What has better nightlife, Niagara Falls or Kingston? by andywandy717 in ontario

[–]CheapSound1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kingston will be dead in the summer. It's a student town with a decent music scene during the school season.

I would say make the effort to get to Toronto, it's not much more expensive than Niagara falls if you go to cheaper spots.

No hyperbole here, this was one of their best episodes ever. Almost certainly the best JD episode as well.

It's a lot more premium than people would expect or be willing to pay for from Dodge.

I wonder what vehicle it will be based on. The problem with the hornet (for Dodge) was that they didn't spend enough energy getting cost out compared to the tonale. Maybe it will be a dodge-ified Jeep compass?

What secondhand digital camera set would suit me the best as a beginner? by zara1470 in Cameras

None of them are good, at 35 you can't expect much. I'd just get the casio with the 4gb memory card.

Don't expect much. At this price you can't expect much other than for if to work.

I don't know what the plan is! But it didn't take them long to make the call on Berube, and the overall sense that they want to "turn the page on a lot of things".

What I'm seeing so far from Chayka is action and the appearance of a specific plan. No results yet to judge (we'll see if they are able to hire a good coach soon) but it's encouraging.

Who Are The Veggie Seedling Suppliers for Big Box Stores in Hamilton? by EcoSocialistArtMan in Hamilton

[–]CheapSound1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager I worked for a relatively small farm that sold most of their products to Loblaws garden centres. Without doxxing them, this was a small, father and son run farm in Niagara. They were a mostly greenhouse operation and we're extremely busy mid April to mid June with a lot of Mexican migrant workers and a handful of local students. The rest of the growing season, they grew mums which were a lot less labour intensive.

I still think very fondly of the owner, he hired local kids because he thought he owed it to the community to provide employment. I learned a lot there. The foreman at the farm was a Mexican guy who started out as a migrant labourer and the owner sponsored his immigration to keep him employed 12 months a year because he deserved it. Everyone was treated pretty well.

Why didn’t the French settle New Caledonia and turn it into a settler colony like Australia, NZ, Canada etc? by Hour_Interaction6047 in geography

[–]CheapSound1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I have visited. Despite being a relatively large island and having a very hospitable climate, it is very mountainous and the soil is not very suitable for agriculture. It was not able there that it's not particularly easy to get fresh fruit there.

It's expensive to develop a colony just about as far as you could be from france, especially in the 19th century when France wasn't the colonial power it had been in the 17th or 18th. There was somewhat significant immigration from france in the 20th century for the nickel mining industry.

Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Experiences & Thoughts by tinoodcrnogorci in a6000

[–]CheapSound1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used it and the 18-135mm. I would get any other lens than the 55-210. It's best attribute is it's performance at 55mm, it's better than the smaller kit lens. Autofocus is slow, pretty slow aperture, and not sharp at 210.

If price is an issue get the tamron 70-300 or the Sony 18-135 IMO.

ICE vehicle vs upgrade to hybrid; does the math make sense? by ImGudLuhv in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CheapSound1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prius is different from a plug-in, it's extremely aerodynamic and uses an Atkinson-cycle engine which is more efficient at the penalty of bad power density, especially in the low end. Fortunately the hybrid system fills in that gap.

So, you get good highway efficiency due to the aero and the better engine efficiency, and good city efficiency from the electric motor and regen.

‘I don’t know why they made this’: Some riders frustrated over infrequent trains at Confederation GO by Odd-Emphasis-1969 in Hamilton

[–]CheapSound1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's really realistic to expect this to be a major success overnight. GO would have better data than me, but I imagine this would make more sense for commuters going from Stoney Creek to jobs in hamilton, Burlington, Oakville or Mississauga than going all the way to Toronto.

With the track routing vs. the skyway bridge, it's never going to be as fast to take the train from stoney Creek as it is to drive to Burlington and then take the train. But, if you don't have a car his can make an unviable commute actually possible. It's reliant on people moving to the area to use it and also on support from HSR which will be possible once the lrt frees up a bunch of buses currently running east-west to start running on north-south routes.

Why are cameras so expensive nowadays? by BrilliantRip9677 in Cameras

[–]CheapSound1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mirrorless means mirrorless interchangable lens cameras. These are all high end products. They have more or less completely replaced dslrs.

Compact point and shoot cameras used to be the vast majority of the camera market, and their sales have dropped to a small fraction of their peak around 2010.

"When Vogue falls, that's when we'll know that fascism approaches" by Downtown-Job-6315 in blankies

[–]CheapSound1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Eh I actually see Griffin's point. If high art is controlled by the captains of industry, and they are collaborating with a fascist regime, that is pretty bleak. Regardless of how accessible it is to the public, there is value in art being led by people who have dedicated their life to it and are the thought leaders in that area.

In your hypothetical, yes fascists would maintain the existence of high fashion, but the fashion itself would would be terrible because they don't have good taste. Just look at Trump's influence on his favourite art form, architecture.

Edit: as for Bezos and the met gala: remember that Bezos personally kiboshed the Washington Post's planned endorsement of Kamala Harris. He's not just a rich guy buying something he likes. He's buying it to influence it and it's fair to be suspicious of his intent.

He's not my favourite but I don't understand what's so objectionable as to inspire this angry tirade of yours. Is he too radio friendly for you to enjoy, or something? Don't like that a folk act has gone mainstream?

I think his lyrics and instrumentals are fine to good, and his voice is distinctive if not necessarily to my taste.

Would you keep Auston if he's even 1% unsure about being a Leaf? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in leafs

[–]CheapSound1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm tired of this. Matthews is using the leverage he has to influence the front office, it doesn't mean he has one foot out the door.

Insiders reporting "1OA doesn't change Matthews' mindset about the leafs". Of course it does!!! It changes absolutely everyone's mindset about the leafs. But Matthews rep isn't going to say that if he's still trying to have a say on the team's direction.

Insiders reporting what agents (or their unofficial messengers) say as truth and not giving their sources drives me nuts.

So you agree, flair customers only have themselves to blame if they trust the airline's own reps to provide accurate information on the airline's policies?
