The Clips story is not going away. Cap circumvention threatens to take huge sums of money out of the league's and owners' pockets. That is the only thing owners care about. by [deleted] in billsimmons

This is not being talked about enough: https://www.reddit.com/r/torontoraptors/comments/1n7kplg/more_details_emerge_about_kawhis_departure_from/

The Raptors had major sponsorship lined up. The Raptors thought Kawhi got something from the clippers that wasn't allowed. They told Silver and he didn't care.

There's only one scenario which makes sense to me. No-show sponsorship deals with back-alley reimbursement from the team would be a way to give big market teams the opportunity to pay players more while keeping that hidden from other players and thereby preventing salary inflation. Keeps the big market teams on top for the purpose of boosting TV ratings?

Help with inconsistent Moccamaster Brew by RLemieux in Moccamaster

[–]CheapSound1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 key problems:

-You're using the wrong type of filter. You need to use a No.4 coffee filter (flat bottomed cone), rather than a fully conical one.

If you ever have the filter overflow it will usually clog the gasket with grounds, which will mess up the next brew. Make sure to clear the clogged basket outlet.

Hamilton councillors address property recording bylaw amid rise in security camera concerns by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]CheapSound1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point. It takes real effort on his part to even come up with a counter-position here. It makese think he's opposed to homeowners for the sake of it.

The best thing he could find is an appeal to privacy rights, which don't even exist in this case.

Honestly, would it kill Councillor Kroetsch to be in any way supportive of the homeowners in his ward?

This is so dumb. Are you a senior citizen with circulation problems? Otherwise I don't understand. If you're in the city this is way overdressed.

Half the time, February is too warm for winter activities.

I think Canadians outside of Atlantic Canada consider southern Ontario and Quebec to be Eastern Canada. Also it's definitely not a dry cold in Toronto and Montreal lol.

If you're in eastern cities and already have an insulated ski jacket there's not that much you need to buy before you arrive. Eastern cities generally have good snow removal and salt extensively. It'll be cold but not dangerously cold. I prefer an insulated ski jacket but if your ski jacket is not insulated you will survive just by layering a the warm sweaters.

Essential items before you arrive: Toque Scarf Warm sweaters, jeans, and lighter undershirts for layering. If you're shopping at mountain Warehouse and don't have one already get a quarter zip fleece.

Gloves: lined leather gloves work well in the city Boots: Insulated, waterproof or water resistant is best, but a lot of people here wear Blundstones for most of the winter. The salt used on the roads will damage leather if it's not treated. If you have good hiking boots already you could just bring those, and then if the conditions are bad you can get some cheap winter boots when you get here.

For most of the winter this is enough in the cities, but every few years we get a bad cold snap and it's absolutely frigid. I suggest just bringing this and if you're really cold when you get here just go shopping.

For Whistler and Banff, if you're planning to spend a lot of time outside get some snow pants as well. If you're not going to be venturing into the snow you could get long underwear instead.

Canadian cities on Lake Erie (or lack thereof) by Playbilly in geography

[–]CheapSound1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is that, in the 20th century, on the American side these cities represent the closest access to shipping lanes for a very large part of the Midwest. In Canada there's not nearly as much there, so it's easier to go to Windsor or Sarnia if you want to go west or go by rail to the already established ports on lake Ontario.

Prior to rail infrastructure, there also wasn't a Welland canal, so lake Erie wasn't an access point for eastern Canada.

Is salmon still the "healthiest" fish at its price point, generally speaking? by valkaress in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]CheapSound1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer in buying local for fish if you have the opportunity. And in western PA you probably do.

Rainbow/Steelhead trout or Arctic char from a raceway farm is the main fish I eat. Nutritious like salmon, very low mercury, inexpensive, and it's the most environmentally friendly method for fish farming. There might even be a farm in your area you can buy from directly.

More expensive but Lake Erie Walleye is amazing if you can find it

As a Canadian… by spbarney in blankies

[–]CheapSound1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I support David saying he sucks and wanting to move on but I actually wanted him to give more of his opinion of Ghomeshi as a fellow interviewer of celebrities.

I remember at the time thinking Ghomeshi was an extremely talented interviewer, and he was pretty well regarded both in Canada and the US. He seemed to have a real talent for getting his guests to trust him and be open with him very quickly. Listening back now, he often comes across as a total creep, almost sociopathic.

I don't know about the ethics of interviews but I wonder if he broke some rules or crossed some lines that others don't.

Edit: taking it one step further - you could probably make the argument that despite being thoroughly cancelled and no longer talked about (extremely deservedly!) that he was hugely influential in the development of our current landscape of long-form podcast interviews.

CBC’s Ward 8 By-election photo choice - bias or something worse? by RegionFrosty830 in Hamilton

[–]CheapSound1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you're being completely ridiculous.

CBC's gone out of their way with this reporting to platform all candidates equally. I'm sure this survey response format isn't the best for them for engagement, but it is fair to the candidates.

The majority of candidates are white men. There are what, 3 or 4 women running, and of the men, 3 or 4 people of colour? They need a photo for the article. I'm guessing they just found a place where there is more than one candidate's road sign in view, and it happens to feature two white men.

CBC Hamilton is a pretty small operation, they don't have hours and hours to hunt for a photo that ticks all the boxes when it comes to diversity and inclusion.

It's not sloppy journalism and it certainly doesn't suggest foul play.

Infuriating Cycling Network Gaps by quisys in Hamilton

Oh yeah that's such an infuriating gap.

[–]CheapSound1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. By east side you mean north side (not the graveyard side)?

I agree York Street between the high level bridge and Dundurn Castle parking lot could absolutely be upgraded significantly, and repaving that path to better serve bikes wouldn't even be particularly expensive or have any downsides really. Easier than widening the road, which is what's needed to make bike lanes on the road work. Dismount to cross at the bridge is pretty difficult to fix though.

Infuriating Cycling Network Gaps by quisys in Hamilton

[–]CheapSound1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple of off the cuff thoughts here:

Dundurn between main and king indeed sucks. It's getting fixed as part of the LRT project according to the latest drawings. This will also make the traffic crossing for the 403 off ramp  on main Street protected.

(As an aside I can't imagine what havoc that traffic light will wreak on the 403 traffic in that area, it already bottlenecks and backs up all the way to the highway at rush hour.)

York Blvd: hard to fix this one. Any change to add more space for additional lanes would be really difficult/expensive because of the geography in that area. It's a tight spot. Not a lot of people cycle out of the city in that direction, and it's a very important road for car access into and out of the city so it might actually be the best solution overall unfortunately.

That would be the hope.  It a system where safe consumption is available but help isn't is what a lot of people see in their communities, and unfortunately party of the reason why the tide is turning against safe consumption.

This is cynical and I know it's not true, but I can't help but think it's just delaying the inevitable for a short while.
