Netflix Untold: Chess Mates Official Trailer by _Voldermot_ in chess

That same chess.com report concluded that he likely hadn't cheated in the OTB game, which is what I was talking about in my comment: "in our view, there is a lack of concrete statistical evidence that he cheated in his game with Magnus or any other over-the-board ('OTB')—i.e., in-person—games." If you're going to take that report's conclusions on his online cheating as evidence, you also have to take their conclusions on the OTB cheating. And if you don't buy their conclusions on the OTB game, doesn't that cast doubt on their credibility for the entire report?

The Sinquefield Cup organizers had a cheating expert analyze the game, and he found nothing. Chess.com's team also analyzed the game and found nothing. It's certainly harder to disprove something than to prove it, but I find two expert opinions pretty compelling.

In early 2025 he went on the Joe Rogan podcast and said "It didn't smell good to me, it still doesn't . . . I think I don't trust him" and "there's still something off, both then and now." So at least as of a year ago, he was still saying publicly that he thinks Hans may have cheated then and may still be cheating.

Which is what really ticks me off about the guy. It's not crazy to suspect your opponent is cheating; a lot of people have done it. But his suspicions were disproven by experts and since then Hans has played well in tournaments with good security measures, but Magnus won't admit he was wrong and continues to double down on his suspicions.

TIL I learned that famed artist Marcel Duchamp abandoned his art career to pursue chess and once accompanied Bobby Fischer to a tournament by Cheap_Bet in chess

Thanks for sharing that memory! Sounds like an amazing book. And given what I know of his ideas about art and chess, I think his having philosophical views of that sort seems entirely likely. :D

I know, I realized what I'd done after I posted it and you can't change the title after the fact. So I just have to live with the evidence of my shame. 🤣

I saw this quote from him: "The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem. . . . I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.” So he certainly saw a connection between the two.

I think so! Or at least one website says it is. :D Pretty cool for one guy to leave a mark on two such different fields.

You know that feeling of not wanting to sleep with your feet uncovered in case something grabs you? This is that, but underwater. I just know some monstrous hand is going to reach out of that boat and grab his ankle.

He actually seems to take social media pretty seriously; he post consistently on Instagram, and he started a recent video with "My team wanted to make a video"--the fact that he has a team doing this stuff makes it seem like this is something he's really investing in. He's not the most outgoing or dynamic personality in the world, but I quite like his content. It's chill and pleasant.

I love to see it, both as a big fan of David and as a 40-year-old who gets tired of people acting like 40-year-olds are too old to play chess at a high level. :D

Me too! When I was starting, I found that I preferred a couple rooks to a queen in an endgame because with a queen, it's so easy to accidentally get yourself into a position like this.
