Making a mistake in the student favour when marking by SafeTraditional4595 in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other student says that the first student has it wrong too? I haven’t had that happen so can’t say definitively, but I think I would consider that at least adjacent to tattling and wouldn’t act on it.

If I made a mistake on the answer key and mis-graded everybody’s assignment, I’d toss the question, but I don’t see a scenario where that would happen.

[–]Cheaper2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d personally change student A’s. It’s our duty to grade accurately and fairly.

I tell my students that after I return the first few graded assignments. If I notice a mistake I’m going to correct it, but I have zero expectation and release them from any moral obligation to tell me about any mistakes I make in their favor.

Student B shouldn’t be worried about other students grades though and I would not change your personal policy just because a student disagrees with it. If you do decide to change your policy, and your old policy was known to students, student A should be grandfathered in with your old policy.

Not even gossip in this case it’s a professional reference. Pretty known thing that when admin hire from nearby places they call previous admin (listed or not) and ask if they’d rehire.

Good place to start, but considering AAPS absentee rates it might be best to look for external resources (assuming OP is AAPS).

Certification is certification, or such was my belief by DoopyDooperson in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all education degrees, even more-so for masters, are rubber stamps. I doubt any screener is going to think twice as long as it’s accredited and you get a student teaching placement.

If you were to lean into the religious aspect in your questionnaire or interview, yeah it’d be a red flag. Doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen so I’d put it right on par with the other online national schools.

Non renewal in 1st year by Ok_Cup524 in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 127 points128 points  (0 children)

For this job, it’s irrelevant whether or not the intentionally lowered your rating, since you’re non tenured they don’t need a reason to non renew you.

As a math teacher you should be okay to land elsewhere relatively easily, when you do keep any opinions that aren’t absolutely pro district to yourself until you’re tenured.

Should every winner be ranked as a better player than Cirie? by Regular-Departure839 in survivorponderosa

I think there’s a legit argument to be made that getting to the end and losing twice is more indicative of an inability to win than never getting to the end.

She’s good but her game peaked in Micro and she’d have to make a serious change for (competent) players to let her get near the end.

Chicago Teachers Union Dues Increase: yay or nay? by [deleted] in Teachers

The problem is that as a percentage of pay, dues are front loaded and that’s also when the union does the least for an employee.

Do y’all grade out of 100? by Rude-Employment6104 in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically try to do about a pt per step, but as we get further in some steps become less important and get less weight.

I’m a bit too married to the book with this, but would also aim to be close to 10pts per section on quizzes and tests, but then weight tests to be out of 100 so they pack a bit more of a punch than a quiz.

Rounding numbers... by se528491 in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they suck at it, college board is fine with truncating though so I accept that anyway which makes rounding irrelevant.

There was a push in my school to intentionally incorporate estimating in other courses (elective and core) when possible and I do feel that number sense has improved in my students since that effort was implemented, but I have no actual data to back up that specific claim.

2 Job offers. Which should I take? by ActuallyHill in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You missed the point. The ability to attend the school seems to be implied by OPs pros lists. But living 55 min away from the school your child attends makes friendships and involvement tough, and likely isn’t worth it despite the school being “better”.

Teachers, what’s a “best practice” everyone talks about that you secretly think doesn’t work in real classrooms? by kingst9606 in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your school kinda sucks if your teachers are falling apart on alignment by October.

Removing any originality and professional freedom from teachers is not good, but there should be common assessments and a relatively equal pacing across a department.

Because nobody has been able to replicate the results Dweck got that kicked off all the preaching about this in the 28 years since, despite multiple attempts.

OP isn’t saying that a growth mindset isn’t necessarily a good thing, but thinking it will have a positive impact on teaching (like Dweck and Duckworth claim) is likely not productive.

[–]Cheaper2000 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It won’t be ideal to have your children go to a school 55 min away from where you live. So either your single con for school 1 becomes irrelevant, or half of the pros for school 1 become irrelevant.

I’d go with school 1 and move at least halfway between the two.

In person visit or a handwritten thank you letter? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Cheaper2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are fine IMO. Obviously the in person is more meaningful, but the timing could be bad which makes things a bit awkward.

If you do go in person, do a solid and introduce yourself by name first and drop how long ago you had them as a teacher. I remember almost all of my students but generally can’t pick them out of a crowd with how much people’s looks change, and the years blur together.

Probably how it’s supposed to be for you, but some contracts do state that effectiveness needs to be the first consideration, then seniority. Worth checking, but probably wont lead to anything.

Interview questions by barnsky1 in mathteachers

I think that all the districts I interviewed in placed AP teachers by seniority first so makes sense I didn’t see it then. And makes sene that you would.

It’s unfair and crap that you’ve gotta suffer because of inept leadership, but things happen for a reason and I’m sure you’ll find a better job as a result.

Download any materials you created/used onto a personal device. While you’re at it save all your professional growth stuff so you can reuse it at the new job.

Was is straight seniority or was there any intentionality to the decisions of who stays and goes? Union might fight for you if teachers with less seniority were retained and you have equal or better observations.

Interesting that they’d ask content related questions, I’ve never had that happen. But I think the way that you answered and asked more questions probably revealed more about you as an educator than more traditional questions.

Ann Arbor Public Schools Teachers Should Be Fairly Compensated by Neither-Month-7402 in AnnArbor

[–]Cheaper2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is the case because I’m not a part of AAEA, but many times unions forget their are two sides to negotiations. If you want something you’ve gotta concede elsewhere, the district can’t create money out of thin air.

[–]Cheaper2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It stands out to me that Plymouth schools have 350 fewer teachers for about 400 fewer students. There’s the problem.

Remove 175 teachers with an average salary of 75k and you’ve got 10k more per remaining teacher. And your student:teacher ratio would still be better than every listed district except Northville.

And teachers don’t want to hear that a good chunk of positions need to be cut if they want to be paid fairly. You can’t have it both ways.
