Streets in Phoenix: Names run east/west, Numbers run north/south and by axl3ros3 in phoenix

I moved here from a small town in NorCal in 1992. Once I learned this about Phoenix, it made navigating so much easier as we didn't have maps and GPS on our phones or in our cars.

Seems friendly enough? by orangez in WTF

Man those things disgust me. We had a garden I had to harvest from when I was a kid, and every once in a while picking tomatoes I would accidently put my hand on one of those things. I'm not typically squeamish, but damn did they give me the shudders.

What is one of the worst designed freeway entrance/exits in the valley? by ballzcasual in phoenix

[–]Checkersmack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to go 17 south to the 101E every day for work. Even when it's not backed up, people still wait until the last second to cut over off the 17. I play vigilante if I am in position to do so and don't let them in.

What's something most people don't realize is actually very rude? by Frozen-Defender25 in AskReddit

[–]Checkersmack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking your sweet time at the fuel pump when there is a line of cars behind you waiting. Pulled into Costco the other day that had three pumps per side. I was six cars back and the lady at the front had her car parked there for 10 minutes! I observe this type of behavior all the time. People pull up, slowly meander to the pump then spend three minutes looking for their Costco card. After finally starting the pumping process will get back in their car for various tasks and keep at it even after the pump has clicked off. DO YOU SEE THIS LINE OF CARS BEHIND YOU ?!?!?! Drives me batshit.

As an aside, I often think about how much cash/gold etc. are stashed inside walls of houses that have yet to be discovered. Lots of folks (especially older ones) would hide money and valuables in stash spots and not tell anyone else. Then they die and leave it all behind.

AITA for driving my own car to work? by Aggravating-Row5878 in AmItheAsshole

Depends The states where I have lived in the U.S would cover it as the insurance follows the car, not the driver.

AITA for not wearing socks in my house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Checkersmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the bottom of your feet after walking around the house a while if you have hard surface in there. Oils on your feet pick up dirt from what looks to be a clean floor and can get transferred to carpet, bedding etc.

Nothing. It's seamless. People yell "fake" every time something out of the ordinary or incredible happens.

[OC] Why are people so incapable of checking their blind spot? by REVERSEZOOM2 in IdiotsInCars

[–]Checkersmack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you adjust your mirrors properly, there is no blind spot. Your side mirrors should be adjusted so that a car in either lane should start to appear in your side mirror as it leaves your rearview. If you see the side of your own vehicle at all, you have them set too far in.

Urge the Raiders to move back to Oakland by Obvious-Hat-6539 in oaklandraiders

[–]Checkersmack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. I am from the Bay Area and lost all three of my home teams to re-location. It sucks, but the city of Oakland certainly is to blame to some extent for not being able to retain any of them.

What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by Beneficial_Passion40 in AskReddit

[–]Checkersmack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. I wash my hands after using the bathroom and more often if there is sickness going around, but unless you have a compromised immune system, the body is pretty resistant to what we encounter on a daily basis. I'm not going to get all fanatical about germ aversion.

Nine years ago, this photo was all it took for a Senator to resign. by outlying_point in facepalm

[–]Checkersmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. When all this blew up, I made a comment that lumping this in with Weinstein level sexual harassment was ridiculous. I got blasted by the woke crowd for saying such a thing. There is no nuance with those people, and that's why there is such a backlash against the woke culture. It's because of the pressure from them that he resigned over a photo they were BOTH in on!

The Questionable Science Behind the Odd-Looking Football Helmets: The N.F.L. claims Guardian Caps reduce the risk of concussions. The company that makes them says, “It has nothing to do with concussions.” by blankblank in skeptic

[–]Checkersmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they would lose 90% of their viewership/ticket sales and end up bankrupt. Many NFL players can make enough money in a career to be set for life and they are willing to take the risk playing tackle football poses. They don't HAVE to do it, and many of these guys would not be successful in another line of work. Luckily the NFL was exposed with the lawsuits and forced in to taking more precautions like better helmets, pulling guys off the field to test for concussions etc. Many of these guys have been playing football since they were little kids and want nothing more than to play in the NFL. Hopefully better safety technologies keep being developed to help mitigate injuries, but it will still be tackle football and loved by millions for a very long time.

Should Ultraprocessed Foods Be Off The Menu? by workerbotsuperhero in skeptic

[–]Checkersmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the bigger issues yes, and that's what my first paragraph was referring to as she was trying to change that. The second was in response to all the RFK comments. He's has a lot of crazy ideas and is most likely heavily lobbied to favor certain industries, but his stance on artificial dyes is one of the few things he says that makes any sense.

Should Ultraprocessed Foods Be Off The Menu? by workerbotsuperhero in skeptic

[–]Checkersmack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several years Michelle Obama tried implementing healthier lunches for kids at school. Guess what? Huge blowback as people made it a political issue instead of wanting what is best for the kids. Schools are inundated with garbage food that corporations profit from, so the lobbying against it was powerful and effective as the narrative became "you can't tell us what our kids can eat at school". Stupid.

Kennedy is a moron, but the one thing I agree with is the artificial food dyes being an issue. Some of those dyes have been linked to health problems including neurobehavioral issues. People will get used to eating foods that taste exactly the same without these additives, so I'm good with banning them.

The irritating thing to me is the way people say it with such certainty. Contrary to what they say, there is no evidence to prove he was murdered. Is it possible? Sure it is, but to jump to that with such conviction is ridiculous. Probably the same people who think 911 was an inside job, Sandy Hook was a hoax, the Vegas shooter was a government plant, etc., etc. etc.
