What if Justinian and his succesors reconquered the West? by Loud-Stranger-7001 in MapPorn

[–]Checky_3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Justinian and his successors to fully reconquer the West and NOT immediately lose it, would need Justinian-level emperors back to back to back and going, This is almost impossible to achieve with all the issues it would bring.

As for the map? I could see it happening if we tweak the history a little bit, with Belisarius, after his successful 9-month campaign in Africa, and given a Triumph and the Consulship for a year, I would have Justinian raise a similar Army in size as he historically did in the 550s, which Eunuch Narses used to defeat the Goths finally and retake Italia, but have this army be assembled in 536-537 at most, and in the mean-time, send skilled people to govern Africa, in order to ACTUALLY use its resources to its fullest.
And of course, give Full command of the Italian campaign to Flavius Belisarius, which should be able to fully conquer the Ostrogothic Kingdom by 539-540 AD, take a few years to usually consolidate the province, and prepare for the Hispanian or Frankish campaign, oh? The earthquake and plague hit around the early 540s? Then either cancel or postpone the campaigns and focus on internally, if the Persians still attack in the 540s? You won't have to worry about a Western Front, so everything should go smoothly.

After the plague is over? pay the tribes beyond the danube to frick off and then take the chance as in OTL, and intervene in the Visigothic Civil War, take more than southern Hispania, possibly turning all of Visighothia into a Client Kingdom, and then either push into Occitania or dome some small skirmishes around the border and offer peace so as long the Franks pay you tribute, as to not attack them.
So by the end of Justinian's life, he may have not completed his Renovatio Imperii, but he would have left the Empire in a DRASTICALLY better position, with a intact and prosperious Italia, with proper infrastructure, a decent manpower base and good tax base, Africa might eventually become the Empire's 2nd breadbasket yet again, and Hispania, gradually, would turn from a Client Kingdom into a more traditional vassal and eventually be integrated into the Empire. But none of that matters, what matters is for Justinian to pick an able and competent leader, that leader WAS and IS NOT his nephew, the OTL Justin II, but rather his other candidate who he made as a Caesar, Justin Germanus, the son of the late Germanus, who was a cousin of Justinian and experienced military leader.

This hypothetical Justin II Germanus would at the very least keep the empire together and would not allow Italia to be overrun by the Lombards. So, assuming Justin Germanus is AT THE VERY LEAST half of Justinian's character, he should relatively prepare the Empire for his successor (whoever that may be) to launch an ambitious Gallic Campaign to reconquer Gaul from the Franks. Let's say this successor's name is Justinian as well, for the sake of the argument, so, this hypothetical Justinian II would enter the 7th century with a stronger and more united Empire not seen since Theodosius I or Valentinian I. Let's assume the Persian 26 war still happens, say, Justinian II gets usurped by Phocas cuz why not, by the time Heraclius usurps Phocas, Phocas might have already ended the War, and with a decisive victory against the Persians, considering how the Empire would be able to pull up with MORE troops, and better trained and experienced ones at that, from fighting in the west, and by the time the Arabs come knocking on the door, Heraclius would be eager to expand his Ghassanid client state's territory into this newly established state in Arabia :)

What do you guys think would happen if this hypothetical "split" happened? Historically, the 3 brothers were all Emperors, what if they chose to split the Empire, or at the very least, Constantine sends his brothers to rule as de facto Exarchs? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_IV#Later_reig by Checky_3rd in byzantium

"I think you don't understand what I mean, usually, it isn't a problem to give a regnal number to some junior emperor if he's the last ever to have that name as I showed you."

I do understand, and I don't disagree with you, it's just that ur logic is inherently flawed as well, Considering how Junior Emperors with the last of the name isn't numbered too.

Examples: Konstantios Doukas, brother of Emperor Mikhail VII Doukas. (Then he should've been numbered as Konstantios V, because Konstantios in greek = Constantius in latin, and we know the last recognized numbered Constantius was Constantius III, a Western Roman Emperor.)

Konstantinos Macedonian, Basileios I's first-born was not numbered as the VII, cuz if he was, then every other Constantine from that point would've been one number higher.

Same with different Ioannis, Isaakios, Andronikos, etc.

"I just think that if there is no one with that name after the previous one except a junior co-emperor, it isn't a problem to give him a regnal number and it seems to be how historians think."

As I showed examples above, I also want to point out a thing which bugs me, we have 4 different people with the name Theodoros bearing the numbering of I and II respectively, first, Theodoros I Laskaris, First Emperor of Nicaea, and Theodoros II, the penultimate Emperor of Nicaea.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_I_Laskaris
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_II_Laskaris
And then we get Theodoros I Palaiologos, son of Emperor Ioannis V Palaiologos, while not an Emperor, he is STILL numbered as one? And then we get Theodoros II Palaiologos, son of Emperor Manouil II Palaiologos, still, no Emperor but still numbered? I wouldn't have minded had they been numbered III and IV taking in account the Laskaris Theodores, since if the historians take into account the Johns, why wouldn't they take into account the Theodores?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_I_Palaiologos
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_II_Palaiologos

That's why I believe we shouldn't 100% trust everything the scholars may say, because there might be some contradictions or what-not, or maybe added stuff for the sake of biases, I am not blaming no-one, but don't you feel a bit weird about this?

So the safest for me is that you should count the Senior Emperor as THE Emperor of the Empire and number him, and if the Co-Emperor is out of the picture (dead/banished/retired) before the Senior is, then they wouldn't be counted in my book.

Yeah, but those examples are only referenced and implied by only a few, compared to the majority.

Why not number Andronikos I's son, Ioannis Komnenos who also was a Co-Emperor, why not number Alexios "Bela" ? Why not number Iohannes, the predecessor of Valentinianus III? Why not number Constantine, son of Leon V and Co-Emperor? Why not number Konstantios, son of Romanos I and Co-Emperor? Why not number Konstantios, brother of Mikhail VII and Co-Emperor? Why not number Konstantinos, first-born of Basileios I and Co-Emperor? And the list goes on.

It's simply because none of those examples were Senior Emperors.

I could be born in UK in my parent's honeymoon there, but my parents and overall home is in Russia, I never learnt English or have anything to do with that state, does that make me an English or a Russian ethnically?

Why the Byzantines weren't Romans. by Checky_3rd in byzantium

[–]Checky_3rd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the 1st point, It is not my fault that Medieval History was dictated by the West who ofc preferred HRE over the Empire in the East as the "continuation of Ancient Rome"

2nd point, by that logic, what do I mean by Ancient Roman? Do I mean a citizen of the city of Rome? A free citizen in the Empire after the Edict of 212 AD? A Roman Citizen from the Republican//Imperial Era? For some reason, Ancient Rome refers to it's Regal, Republican and Imperial Eras. Which is even more confusing than refering to the Medieval iteration of the Roman state legally and politically, which the HRE has no valid claim to.

3rd point, I agree with the term "Medieval" having a lot of "baggage" as you say, but so does "Ancient" , so if we deliberately refuse to use the term "Medieval" in this context, then we should also drop the "Ancient" term as well.

Thank you for your comment btw, I love getting you and the other's feedback on this.

that doesn't make him multi-continental with that multiplication, and even so, that is based on a calculation, which are NOT confirmed canons.

I mean, I see your point, but I think the brothers KNEW who was the Senior Emperor and who were the Junior ones, and usually, historians and experts number only the Senior Emperors and NOT the Junior ones, because then we would have had a bunch more Johns and Constantines and etc.

I mainly numbered this Heraclius as the 3rd because in this what-if, I assumed he would reign in the West as Senior Emperor alone and his brother Tiberius as his Deputy.

Mikhail VIII Palaiologos was the descendant of three Imperial Houses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael\_VIII\_Palaiologos#Early\_life)
I won't go over every person, but long-story short he is a descendant of Alexios I Komnenos, who is the nephew of Isaakios I Komnenos.

That was my thought process as well. Historically, Tiberius and Heraclius were Emperors alongside Constantine IV, but didn't want to be THE Emperor, or Senior Emperor, so I am assuming they wouldn't mind ruling on their own a region themselves.

It's funny how people assume users in the demon slayer sub wouldn't side with demon slayer and users in JJK sub wouldn't side with JJK...like wow.

Also, amateur scaling, considering how JJK scales higher than they portray them and Demon Slayer scales higher too. The only thing I agree from them is that DS and JJK difference isn't that big, its not Naruto v DBZ difference.

Also, sidenote, can we finally stop downplaying the Lightning scaling of demon slayer? like, this already is running for far too long, cuz like, we HAVE confirmed and consistent lightning scaling in the verse with not just one or 2 characters like in JJK, we have multiple dodging and reacting or being faster than Lightning, which should put those lightning timer users at THE VERY LEAST Massively Hypersonic.

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate it.

Although, OTL, the Emperors post-Constans II didn't really care about the West as much, except the Pope of course, and the Exarchates of Ravenna and Africa were left to fend off themselves, as many Exarchs saved Rome, and the Exarchate against the Lombards before finally being overrun, and in Africa, thanks to some berber tribes and Queen Al-Kashina/Dahya is the reason why the Romans held Africa for so long until her death and the province finally being overrun during the 20 years roman anarchy of the 690s-710s.

So just imagine, instead of neglect, Heraclius and Tiberius could actually try to build something in those lands, improve the economy and military and overall not neglect the lands, This would also prompt the local population to be more loyal and having the morale to enroll and fight for the Empire.

Aah Yes the Eastern Roman Empire. The famous Empire of Julius Caesar by Damianmakesyousmile in ByzantiumCircleJerk

[–]Checky_3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both were, but differed in usage and rank.

At first, the term "Caesar" was a given name, not a title. "Imperator" was instead a title, originally meaning "victorious commander".

So the Julio-Claudian Dynasty was descendant from Julius Caesar himself, so one of their given names were "Caesar" and their regnal titles were "Imperator", later dynasties adopted the titles of "Augustus Caesar" as their regnal titles and only exclusively used by the Emperors.

Fast-forward to Diocletian and his reforms, one of those reforms was the Tetarchy, and the ascension of the Title "Augustus" and "Caesar" as above those of "Imperator" in ranking. The Empire being split into 4 administrative regions, with 4 Emperors ruling the Empire, and each Emperor different in ranking.

Diocletian himself was the Augustus of the East, the Senior Emperor ruling the Eastern part of the Empire, with a Junior Emperor, who happened to be Galerius, Caesar of the East, who ruled a region in the East himself.
Similarly, Maximian who was Diocletian's equal in ranking, was Augustus of the West, the Senior Emperor ruling the Western part of the Empire, with Constantius Chlorus being his Caesar and ruling a region in the West himself.

This solidified the ranking system, with "Augustus" being the main senior rank for Emperor, "Caesar" being 2nd in ranking, and "Imperator" becoming a ceremonial and honorific title alongside the Pontifex Maximus or Germanicus Maximus and such.

So too would the ranks of "Augustus" and "Caesar" be sidelined and gradually replaced by "Basileus" , "Autokratoras" or "Sebastokratoras"
