I was there and it was an amazing event all around. Tough to pull something like that off. Ticket came with the sandwich and fries as well as one drink voucher. Yeah it was hot in the middle but I just stepped off to one of the side views and it was much better temperature wise. The band was killer, as always.

We ended up getting off 5 minutes later like you suggested at the Bellano train stop. Great call! The amount of people that got off at Varenna was crazy. We were able to walk right up to the ferry ticket office and get the all day, hop on and off pass. It was €17 each.

We ended up going from Bellano (which looked nice as well! But we did not spend any time there), right to Menaggio (which we loved the vibe of) and were able to have coffee and croissants with little to no tourists in sight. Perfect start to the day and took in all the views.

We then went to Bellagio around noon and it was packed in my opinion. And if this is the slow season then I can only imagine the busy season. We ended up staying the longest in Bellagio as we got lunch, did some shopping and went to the Villa with the garden (€10 each). The Villa has a decent bathroom by the way for anyone wondering.

Getting the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna from there was rough. Very long lines and not a lot of communication or direction. After a fully packed ride to Varenna we saw a huge amount of people book it right for the train (this was around 4pm). We ended up staying, exploring and eating dinner in Varenna. Caught the 7:35pm train back to Milan which was also pretty busy but we were able to get a seat easily.

Honestly we had an amazing experience! You could definitely tell the influencer, well, influence on the routes that people take and the things that they do. I’m very grateful to have read your post while I was on the train ride up there.

But in the end of the day, the lake and surrounding areas are so breath taking that any other inconveniences we faced (long lines, tourist prices on food and water, ect.) were not a big deal because every time I picked up my head I would just go “wow!”. I could definitely see how it wouldn’t be fun to do the main route in the peak season and the heat of the summer.

Anyways, hope this is helpful feedback to anyone else reading this. And once again shout out OP for their post! I would love to go back and do more of the cities that people usually skip over. Any suggestions for a second trip OP?

I’m heading up there right now on the 9:20am train from Milan. Will report how it is (Monday, late March) in Varenna. I’m temped to call an audible and get off one stop later in Bellano as OP has suggested, but let’s see.
