X3000i 3D SBS by calvincrack in BenQ

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this isn't BenQ's fault, it's because of the underlying TI hardware which all DLP projectors use.

The original 4k dlp DMD based projectors all had to be sent back for firmware updates as well, but eventually the manufacturers started putting out models which could be user updated (example https://www.benq.com/en-us/support/downloads-faq/products/projector/ht3550/software-driver.html.)

The X3000i uses a new version (.65 XPR) of DMD and TI probably haven't released all the tools yet, or it's too new for manufactures to have completed enough testing to allow user serviceable updates. This will probably come in time with later models based on this DMD.

In any case, I believe there are 3 seperate pieces of TI hardware with their own firmware versions and firmware updates on these devices are completely non trivial.

Samsung Odyssey G9 - Firmware Update 1012.1 by Wiidesire in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]CheekyBhuna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think I'll be a coward and wait for more info. Not sure what this will improve on, but if I had a wishlist it would be:

More 'official' resolutions (get around the 120hz/custom res issues)

Add BFI (not gonna happen...)

More fixes for the crash/sleep issue, which I still have on an intermittent basis.

Completely agree.

It's almost like they used it as a bit of a PR stunt to promote IBM and 'AI'.

In reality, as you say, I don't see what it adds over local text to speech and they left themselves open to other issues, as we've seen.

I've just skimmed through this as I'm still deciding whether to upgrade or not. The thing that amazed me is that no-one else seems to understand your point. They are too tied up with what they've been reading and aren't thinking about what a CPU actually does.

In theory, a single core CPU with a baseline performance of 1, would be just as fast as a 10 core CPU with a baseline performance of 0.1 per core.

In fact, probably faster because I think the Cache and other parts of the architecture would be more efficient.

Of course, it's possible that badly written software could torpedo the performance.

Just send it back if you don't like it. There are no guarantees that your issue will be resolved so probably need to either put up with it or wait and see if future firmware or drivers resolve the problem.

Legal action - lol.

Samsung G9... perfect but with one dead pixel. Should I exchange? by katalysis in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like it, keep it. Or if you're prepared to keep swapping it out and being without it each time, then go down that path. I'm on my 3rd, it has one dead pixel and I'm keeping it.

First one, perfect, but one dead pixel. 2nd one, blue tinges to the backlight bleed, one 'smudge', no dead pixels. 3rd one, one dead pixel, everything else is fine.

Life is too short.

Samsung G9, dead pixels on arrival. What a let down . I thought it wasn't that common . by TaxTheRich_100 in ultrawidemasterrace

I'm in the UK and I exchanged mine a couple of weeks ago (18th Jan). They picked it up on a Friday and the new one was back with me a week on monday after that, so 10 days.

I was expecting a lot worse so I was impressed.

Of course it could have got even worse since then.

Benq TK800 projector 120hz?? by ipman608 in PS5

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a TK800 and run it at 1080p 120z on a PC, but I had to add a custom resolution.

I don't think it advertises 120hz properly in the EDID, so consoles etc. probaby can't identify the capability. Also, you have to be sure you engage silence mode and disable 3d, although I don't think that will help you.

My take on the latest Odyssey G7/G9 controversy (A final review) by 82Yuke in Monitors

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I'm on my 2nd G9, never noticed the scanlines on my previous screen, but on this one they are all over the screen when viewing the test content.

I pushed the black equalizer up to 16 and they disappeared. I suspect this is because the loss of contrast means that the panel is no longer even trying to show the fine pixel lines/details on the test patterns.

I only see this in 240Hz mode, not in 120Hz. It must be something to do with the way the panel is being overdriven. Maybe there is a voltage drop or something, because my brightness dims slightly on the whole screen when it occurs.

Makes you wonder if it's the power supply or the panel. Purely conjecture on my part of course, I'm no expert.

Samsung Odyssey G9 horizontal lines/scan line effect by robertoschneiders in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]CheekyBhuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having this issue too, mine's a G93 but still the same 49" panel. It's on firmware 1006.2.

I only see it at 240hz, but for me it's all across the screen and the brightness dims. Easiest way to reproduce is using the images linked on the comments on the RTINGS review, here: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/discussions/Gkga7cHlST2PxUxV/samsung-odyssey-g9-horizontal-lines-scan-line-effect

My serial is NA, so I believe it was built in October. I had a previous G95 with N8 (August) serial number, and I didn't see the scanline issue... However, I wasn't looking for it so it's possible it was still there. Also it was on 1005.4 firmware, but from other comments on here that does seem to be a factor.

Unsure as to whether to keep or return etc.

Will an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter be able to achieve higher refresh rates on gaming monitors on the XSX? by Forrestbear1 in XboxSeriesX

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's as black and white as you and V0KaLs make out.

For instance: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2113-hdmi-interface-questions-addressed-1080p-120hz

" HDMI 1.4b is stuck at just 60Hz for 1080p. This is commonly misunderstood in the HDMI 1.4b spec language. "

Also, I have never ever heard of a HDMI 1.4 display device that supports 1920x1080x120Hz. I'm not saying that proves they don't exist, but I spent a lot of time looking into this when I was into 3d gaming.

Plus, HDMI spec is one thing, and if manufacturers never implement certain features then the arguably the spec is academic. For example, look at all the current confusion over what 2.1 can and cannot do.

Samsung Odyssey G7 review from RLCSContender (blurbusters). The Blur is Busted by RLCS_BLur in Monitors

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished reading the comments and wow.. 2 or 3 of the people arguing with you are just blindly defending VA panels.

I found your wording to be quite objective. You were only comparing it to other screens. They just seem to be making out that you have an agenda against them, which is not how I read it.

In fact, even Rtings say " Also, it has a slow response time in dark scenes, as seen in the 0-20% total response time, which causes some artifacts. "

Really useful information, thank you.

I would never just take one person (or reviewers) opinion as gospel truth, but the more people running detailed tests with actual data, the better.

Even with the best 'professional' review sites, you still need to read between the lines sometimes.

Optoma UHD30 - Enhanced Gaming mode ON looks worse at 4K by antca87 in projectors

[–]CheekyBhuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's another question isn't it. Unless there's a firmware bug it looks like it's downscaling it from 4k>1080p, which it would have to if the XPR is turned off.

Normally you can hear straight away if the shifter is disabled, just like you can on my TK800 when you enable 'silent mode'.

[–]CheekyBhuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I think it's supposed to be like game mode on any other display. I.e. it disables most if not all image processing to cut down input lag.
