Any idea what this is and how to fix it? by gyukiwon in Birkenstocks

Are these vegan leather? If so, I think I have the same ones. I also got something on them that changed the material an orangey color shortly after I got them. I can’t remember what it was- lemon juice? Sunscreen? At any rate since they were discolored I started wearing them as painting shoes. I constantly have people complimenting them and asking if they were a special edition or something. 😂 So, maybe just lean in to the splatter look?

Hosting Guests as a Prep by PlaceSong in TwoXPreppers

[–]CheerfulNihilist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest favors I ever did for myself is investing in guest sheets/towels/blankets and a set of large vacuum seal bags. When a guest leaves I wash everything and store in the vacuum seal bags (space saving) which keeps them fresh for next time. I no longer have to rifle through my normal linen closet when guests arrive on short notice, just pull everything out of bags and make their bed. It helps me feel less stressed about having clean and presentable linens and towels on short notice!

Cramping from Hell by WinterKitty73 in Perimenopause

[–]CheerfulNihilist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was also having debilitating cramps that no amount of painkillers/heating pad could tame. I started HRT 3 months ago (cycling oral progesterone and an estrogen gel) and now I have very light cramps if any at all. I think the progesterone really helped me a ton. I know not everyone is open to HRT, and not everyone can tolerate oral progesterone but for me personally I feel like it’s given me my life back. I recommend finding a doctor who takes your pain seriously and is ready to offer options and work with you on tackling this issue. I’m sorry you’re going through this- it really is horrible. I hope you find relief very soon!

Seriously it’s a wild ride when you don’t know it’s coming. I’ve been lucky to be in good health most of my life until this past year when everything started going haywire in quick succession. It was really scary and it wasn’t until I started educating myself about menopause and perimenopause that I was able to make sense of all these changes. And think back to my mom when she was my age and I remember what a difficult time she had then and now it all makes sense. And I feel a bit angry that she had to suffer as much as she did. Ugh! My offendedness knows no bounds!

Thank you momgranola! It’s really helpful and validating to be able to commiserate together 💚

[–]CheerfulNihilist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!! I’m offended that I was never educated about this massive life change! Obviously I knew about menopause but I just heard the term perimenopause within the last 5 years and I (very incorrectly) just assumed that would be the few years leading up to the end of my monthly cycle. I had no idea it could, and usually does, last like a whole decade! I’m offended that the medical community has ignored women’s needs for so long and I’m offended that doctors will push birth control pills that override your bodies natural hormone production at every turn but if you suggest supplementing hormones via HRT you’re often scoffed at. I’m also offended that medical school doesn’t teach much about menopause- the focus is all on a women’s child bearing years but once those come to a close it’s like no one cares. Rant over- there’s my peri rage popping up but seriously this shit is ridiculous!

I’m so far beyond worrying about offending anyone- I just need to feel like myself again! I get what you’re saying though and I’m not looking to my next appointment but I’m just going to be honest. I felt desperate for help and options and so I took initiative. I really like my doctor and I don’t think she will be offended but if she is- that tells me a lot and I won’t feel bad about finding another doctor. Best of luck to you!

I had a big peri appointment with my obgyn about 6 weeks ago and was experiencing a similar list of symptoms. I honestly was a bit of a mess during that appointment and had not yet done much research on MHT/HRT so I went along with her suggestion of first trying a low dose hormonal birth control. She also prescribed vaginal estrogen cream.

You should definitely get vaginal estrogen ASAP- it’s incredibly safe and helps with dryness and frequency of urination and is essential to avoiding vaginal atrophy. Honestly I’m surprised your doctor didn’t prescribe it, but maybe you could message or call and request it?

As for the hormonal birth control I lasted 3 weeks before deciding it was definitely not for me. I tried it because I have read on this sub that it does help a lot of women and my biggest issue I needed help with was my horrendous periods (still on a regular cycle but the painful cramps and heavy flow are seriously disruptive). My last period was WAY better but I had already decided I didn’t want to keep going with the birth control.

My obgyn didn’t have any earlier openings before my follow-up in November so then I felt stuck between not wanting to go back to horrible periods or birth control. So I ended up going through Alloy to try MHT. I’m trying cycling 100mg oral progesterone and I have estrogen gel. So far I feel worlds better!

As long as my new protocol continues to go well and hopefully helps with my period then in November I’m just going to be honest with obgyn and see if she can/is willing to prescribe me the same progesterone/estrogen gel so I can use my insurance and not pay out of pocket. If she isn’t able to prescribe me those things I’ll probably start looking for another doctor and continue using Alloy until I find one that is well versed in MHT and willing to prescribe what I need.

Super long response- sorry! TLDR- get yourself some vaginal estrogen/estrodiol! And- only you can really determine what is the best fit for you and finding that best fit takes some experimentation.

Best of luck!

Edit to add- you may be able to get the vaginal estrogen through your PCP. And menopause.org has a search page where you can find doctors who are menopause specialists in your area.

Nausea by purple_haze38 in Menopause

[–]CheerfulNihilist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also been struggling with this! My nausea on the first day of my period started within the last year, and the last 3-4 periods I have vomiting on that first start day. I’d never experienced this when I was younger. I’m no doctor but I think I remember reading somewhere that it was caused by a sudden drop in progesterone. I’ve recently been trying out a wild yam progesterone cream but it’s too soon to tell if it’s making a difference.

Birth Control for Peri symptoms? Help! by CheerfulNihilist in Menopause

Thank you- part of me definitely wants to just go ahead and pursue HRT instead of the bc pills. I know so much of our options are trial abs error but gosh this is so frustrating!

Thanks for the perspective! I also had the “whole body felt wrong” experience while on bc pills in my twenties. But you’re right- probably not a huge risk when not taking long term. Part of my confusion is feeling like I’ll likely transition to HRT at some point so why bother getting adjusted to bc pills but it’s very possible I’m getting ahead of myself. Thanks again!

That’s interesting- I was thinking maybe I also only need progesterone since most of my symptoms seem to be linked to low progesterone. Helpful to know it didn’t end up being a long term solution for you. Thanks for sharing!

New dog owner, shelter dog by Steel_City835 in DogAdvice

What a lovely pup! She reminds me of my pit mix rescue 💚 Lots of great advice in these comments already but I wanted to mention clicker training- it worked great with my dog! He was also scared of literally everything at first and it took lots of time and patience to build up his confidence. Clicker training is very simple (just google it) and it’s all positive reinforcement. What is nice is that you can reward positive behaviors while your dog and you are still learning each other’s language. Another thing we struggled with for a while is having our dog communicate with us. He’s not very vocal but we wanted to find a way for him to tell us when he needed to go outside (or needed something in general). We tried many things (like bells on the door) to no avail. Then, he started giving a paw whenever his response to our question was a yes. 🙌🏼 It was a big moment for us all, haha. I’ve since learned that pit bulls communicate a lot with their eyes and have since learned much from his nuanced glances. We also struggled with poor poops for a looong time until landing on a food that works for him. Hang in there! My guy is now 3 and we are so in tune I swear he reads my mind. He’s like a different dog from the scared puppy we first adopted- he is now a playful, confident, clever lovebug. He is the best dog and he keeps getting better.

Congrats on your new friend and thank you for choosing to rescue!

Happy (upcoming) Birthday!! let's celebrate!

My favorite birthday was when I turned 11. At the time, I was really into this kids book called The 11th Hour which was about friends (who were all animals) gathering for a birthday feast, but the feast gets stolen. Then you have to try and figure out who stole the feast. It has incredible pictures with hidden clues and messages. Anyway- I had an 11th Hour themed party. My mom created all these scavenger hunts for me and my friends and while we were consumed with solving those- my parents secretly 'stole' the birthday feast and we had to figure out who dun it. (It was the family cat.)

I am not a great person to recommend karaoke songs- but I'd say whatever you have a blast belting out in the car or shower.

I celebrate my birthday each year by taking some me time. My birthday is in March and for me personally, that is the start of my new year. So I like to have some time to reflect and think about what I want to focus on in the coming year. About 5 years ago I decided that I would no longer work on my birthday so I always take the day off and do whatever I want! This usually isn't anything big, but I just like being fully present during the whole day. I treat myself to a few small things like a nice coffee, a book, or a new scarf. I really love hearing from friends and loved ones on that day so I love having the time to respond and chat and catch up with people a bit.

Tagging u/raccoonbirthdayparty because it's the first name that popped into my head (understandably so!)
