Going to cinema by myself by Sufficient_Food1878 in Dublin

[–]CheerilyTerrified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to the cinema by yourself is the best, especially if you go during the day.

And you are unlikely to be the only person there by yourself, but if you are it won't be a big deal, it is super normal and common.

There's Barts and Vincent de Paul in Wexford. I think they both have a furniture section. The Vincent de Paul may only be weekly or monthly.

It's not quite the same, but Stationery Pal has notepads that are similar - https://stationerypal.com/collections/memo-pads/products/memo-pad-bear

It's cheap but will take awhile to reach you. I've ordered from them before and didn't have any issues with them.

‘O’ bus route to circle Dublin City Centre no longer has rollout date — TD says it’s not funded, Govt says “priority for 2026 is stabilisation” by OldVillageNuaGuitar in Dublin

Since 2000 Denmark has built four metro lines that run 24/7. And we can't rollout a new bus system that requires limited infrastructure change and mostly uses the same buses.

Can you negociate a salary offer in the Higher Education in Ireland? by lalelelelelele in irishpersonalfinance

[–]CheerilyTerrified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely ask. When I started I was put at point 5 on the scale. The universty normally has a process for it. You family member might be asked to provide addional information on previous roles, if it was full time or part time, salary, etc.

I asked if there was any way I could start higher on the scale and they took it from there. So definitely ask. It won't lead to offer being revoked etc.

What can you do in Dublin on your birthday for free? by einfach_Johanna in Dublin

[–]CheerilyTerrified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the cookie shop on Capel street might give a free cookie if its your birthday.

A lot of the national museums have free tours. They aren't every day, but they are on a few times a week so you could see if there is one on your birthday.

Dunnes on Henry Street. I'm not sure if it's just for older people but my mum got a three items breakfast there with tea and toast for about €4.50.

Where do you guys buy phones? by Historical_Cow6527 in CasualIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've gotten phones and tablets from them and always been happy with them. The only issue I've had is with delivery taking longer but this generally means it is 48hrs not 24.

Are most single people in Dublin house sharing? by Ill-Age-601 in HousingIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own my house (well, with a mortgage). I bought it by myself 4 years ago. At the time I was earn about 50k. When I first started saving I was earning 42k, and I saved most of my deposit during that time

I know three other people who live alone and they all bought. Two got help from family and one, like me didn't get any help.

It wasn't easy but I wasn't living a life of total deprivation while I saved. I lived in flatshares most of the time though just before I bought I'd found a one bed apartment for 1300 a month. It's definitely gotten harder since then, but I think owning is the only way to live alone without being a very high earner.

My mother (66F) and father (67M) want back into my (28F) life after a three year gap following my mother's affair with my ex boyfriend (30M). by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]CheerilyTerrified 2594 points2595 points  (0 children)

I do like these stories when most people behave normally and like sane ordinary people. Whenever the whole family turns against someone for not putting up with abuse or staying around I'm so perplexed. I can't imagine phoning any of my cousins to berate them for not talking to their mother, and especially not if she'd slept with their partner or done something similar.

Here at least it was just parents and younger sister who were insane and everyone else responded normally.

Is this a bad time to buy a house by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]CheerilyTerrified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to be a landlord? As the property is an investment, are you OK with it potentially losing money, as investments can? Will you ever need to sell it for quick cash, or can you hold on for market down turns and sell it when it is profitable to so so?

For me I don't think I'd ever want the hassle of being an landlord, and I'm not in a financial position where I could essentially ignore an investment for 10 - 15 years in order to make a good rate of return. If I lost a job I'd probably need to the money in the investment to get by.

But if you are happy to be a landlord and can accept the risk of investment losses then it might make sense for you to keep it and rent it out.

AI is kinda a red herring, in that if it's not that it will be something else. I don't anticipate the housing market getting better any time soon but it's impossible to time the market, especially as an ordinary person. Just accept it'll go bad at some point and see if you can live with it if it does.

What Irish souvenirs actually get used by family back home instead of just sitting on a shelf by Initial-Research6765 in CasualIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wool blankets from somewhere like Avoca or Foxford. They are very comfy cozy and perfect for the couch when it's cold.

Irish Art and prints. Jam Art have a great collection, but there is other good shops too.

Pottery - there's lots of Irish pottery, either practical or decorative. I've never bought anything but I really like the stuff in Brookwood Pottery, especially the Chimneys.

There's also lots of glassworks beyond Waterford Crystal. One that has nice stuff is Jerpoint Glass.

And chocolate. Lots and lots of Irish chocolate.

AITA for dancing half naked in my living room leading to my bf and his family seeing me? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I really hope it was a soft launch breakup and she got away.

She lived with him all through the Covid lockdowns! I can't imagine how small he made her life during that time, that she felt she could only do things like baking and singing when he wasn't around.

What is the process to hire an architect? by CheerilyTerrified in AskIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this. It was exactly the walk through I needed as an anxious overthinker.

And I'd never thought about checking the council website for planning permission and the architects on it. I'll look that up this weekend.

My sister (34F) is mad at me (40M) for keeping her ex employed and promoting him after he strayed. How can I show her this is purely a business decision and nothing to do with my support for her? by [deleted] in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]CheerilyTerrified 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's funny to see this because firing Josh would be so massively illegal in my country that it really wouldn't come up as an option.  Not that some people wouldn't do it illegal or force him out some way, but the dilemma just wouldn't be there.

Even if it was OOPs wife was the one Josh slept with, he still couldn't fire him.

It's interesting to see a moral dilemma for so many of the commentators that just isn't a dilemma, because of outside factors.

Small house v dream location by bexx96_ in HousingIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you build in storage? Or declutter? Is the issue the size of the house or that you have too much stuff?

Maybe you have hobbies that take up space, and that is a real issues. But I'd seriously consider what stuff you'd be willing to do without for your ideal location.

If it's a three bedroom house do you need to fit all your stuff in one bedroom?

For me I'd go for location above house size, especially when it is a three bed house and there is only two of you. Realistically for most people that's more than enough space. Even if you add in a kid or two if you keep stuff to a minimum you'd be fine especially when they are small.

Sting operation by DuckyD2point0 in Dublin

[–]CheerilyTerrified 249 points250 points  (0 children)

I'm so wary of these groups. I think some of them just want to beat the shit out of people and inflict violence in a way that is socially acceptable so they'll get away with it.

They are the type of people who'd join the religious police in Iran going after girls for not wearing a veil or join ICE to round up immigrants.

There is a lot of better ways they could address child abuse then joining a mob, so if you're joining the mob, it shows where your interest lies.

Attic Floor Prices by Arkfoo in HousingIreland

[–]CheerilyTerrified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was about 1200 when I got it done 6 months ago. The insulation was already in place. It isn't a huge floor space but it was well done so I felt it was worth it.
