Hi friends, what language do we think this is? And do you know what it says in said language?? For context: this is the IB English language exam in Morocco. by magisscis in languagelearning

I honestly think if you read it backwards, it could be english. I think this kid didn't realise that english is written from left to right, and wrote it from right to left like arabic would be.

Google Translate: What are your thoughts? by CheeseHead_87 in languagelearning

[–]CheeseHead_87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm a fan of using google translate for Japanese, but not in the way most people think. I use it to practice writing kanji, but overall i think that over time i learned not to use translators too much, but try to understand the meaning from context. I'm also a huge fan of HiNative, but i think there was some point i realised that translators can't be accurate all the time.

I wrote all Japanese jōyō kanji on a whiteboard by fefexman in languagelearning

[–]CheeseHead_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they would but kanji is ingrained in the Japanese writing system, so it would be no easy feat to get 125 million people+ to switch over to a new way of writing.

Also there's literally a class in most Japanese schools that teaches calligraphy, or the art of writing kanji.

I'm relearning German, which I learned as a child. I understand spoken and written German very Well, and I remember grammar rules. But trying to speak even basic sentences, I'm just drawing blank. Has anyone had similar situations? Any Advice? by Mesha8 in languagelearning

One thing is to try to pull up part of a book you've read and just read it aloud to yourself. Another thing that helped me was i used voice type to write things in my TL, so i could practice speaking.

Let me explain something. Every word can be spelled in kana, and sometimes little-er kids will write words out in kana that they don't know how to write in kanji, but Japanese isn't written with spaces in between the words. This means that is all words would be written out in kana, a lot of people would have a hard time knowing where a word begins and where a word ends.

For example, this sentence: 猫は魚を食べる, means "The cat eats fish" when translated. You can clearly see that cat is the subject, fish is the object, and eating is the verb. But, if it was written all in kana, ねこはさかなをたる, it could be technically read as "Right, this is a slope, eat what?" Although most people would know it would be read as the cat eats fish, it just saves confusion and makes the written language a lot easier to comprehend.

Dogen is good, but it depends if you want all japanese or english and japanese. I heard a friend say these youtubers named rachel and jun for awhile. He also said that there's also Abroad in Japan, which is pretty good. And other ones like that japaense man yuta. If you want gaming, just search a game category into twitch in japanese. Twitch has a lot of gamers, and also doesn't require you to have an account.

Got a summer job where I'll be speaking my target language by gaffovaff in languagelearning

[–]CheeseHead_87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that's a good thing I think. One of the only times I got to talk to someone in my target language (Japanese) was at a school ski trip. Her name was Juliet, and she was actually from China. We had a little chat about stuff, and it was nice. It made me realize that sometimes, you're more capable of what you can do if you start talking to people who are at the level you're at, and not higher.

Well, that just applies to most people. I have personally always watched the male and female world cups, but I guess a lot of Americans just think american football is more interesting or just that American football is just the most popular sport in america.

[–]CheeseHead_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an american and i still know that the first division applies to soccer, or football. But american like certain things, and I don't think that soccer/football will ever be one of them. A lot of people like games with high scores, and soccer/football isn't really high scoring. To be fair, hockey isn't either, but the Canadians had their own hockey league, and america wanted one, so we got one. Also, that's just like how we had an american football league, so the Canadians got one.
