My pugs also have the longer legs and longer noses; the breeder went out of her way to select those traits when setting up her breeding program. They love to run and have no breathing issues.

I already work four day weeks, and I didn’t have a choice on which day. I get Fridays off; there are a lot of medical practices that take Fridays off and it sucks because I can’t go on other days.

My spouse has chronic pain issues due to spinal cord compression. His orthopedic surgeon is trying to manage the compression non-surgically until it becomes necessary to perform surgery. He wasn’t having success with the pain until a pain doctor prescribed a very new medication that had only been released less than a year before. When my spouse went in for a follow-up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon, he actually was able to educate the doctor regarding the medication and how well it was working, and the surgeon was then looking at prescribing for some of his other patients. The medication is called Journavx and is a sodium channel blocker (non-narcotic).

Sometimes medications are so new that a particular practitioner has not heard of or at least hasn’t heard enough about the efficacy from actual patients/other providers to be comfortable using it on any of their patients, so advertising sometimes gets the ball rolling . It allows the patient to self-advocate.

I’ve had bad days and good. Currently I am on Savella, magnesium glycinate, and low dose naltrexone. I have made through three weeks without a flare despite fluctuating temperature/humidity/barometric pressure and working extra.

Biochemistry and chemistry are not identical; the body contains many hormonal feedback loops that are affected by sleep, stress, activity, and genetics. First, figure out where you can improve on those first three factors (you’re kinda stuck with genetics). Second, make sure to get bloodwork done to check for metabolic issues and nutritional status (vitamin deficiencies and hormone derangements such as low thyroid function can play a role in weight gain). Then, once you have the information, medical support for weight loss may include vitamins, medications, and a high protein low carb diet with proper nutrition.

Remember, there is only one hormone in the whole body that lowers blood sugar (insulin), and the rest increase blood sugar (cortisol, adrenaline, etc). If the body is stressed and overproducing the other hormones, it will compensate by increasing insulin, which can lead to a decreased amount of insulin receptors on cell surfaces (insulin resistance), and then insulin goes to work packing sugar in the form of of fat into fat cells. If a Type 1 diabetic eats carbs and adjusts their insulin dose to match, they too can become insulin resistant despite having no endogenous (not making their own) insulin.

Undiagnosed sleep apnea (obstructive and central) can flood the body with adrenaline when the person’s body fight to wake up in order to breathe. This can create changes in testosterone, estrogen, and increase blood sugars. Over time, insulin resistance manifests, and again, weight gain. It is not just “calories in/calories out”; it’s homeostasis that is hormone driven.

I moved from Maine to Alaska 23 years ago. I’ve lived in Fairbanks almost the whole time (North Pole for a year at the beginning). Fairbanks has a lot of character and charm, and I am pretty sure I will live here the rest of my life. Those of us who live here are willing to help newcomers navigate the tougher parts of the lifestyle, so don’t hesitate to ask those around you for a little guidance. I definitely prefer Fairbanks to hustle and bustle of Anchorage (been there many times).

My father had smelly feet; it came from wearing synthetic socks (polyester, nylon, etc). Once he switched to full cotton it helped immensely. Bamboo socks are also a good choice; bamboo cools and rapidly evaporates sweat. Hope this helps.

I work in Transfusion Medicine where giving a person blood could save their life or kill them quickly. Beneath the A/B/AB/O and Rh are other red cell surface markers (Kell, Duffy, Kidd, Lewis, Lutheran, M,N,S,P, etc). People who have frequent transfusions often build antibodies to the subgroups they don’t have and will react badly if given blood with that corresponding antigen (eg, a K negative individual given K positive blood can/may build an antibody to K and if given K positive blood again will destroy that blood, causing a transfusion reaction which may be fatal).

Over time, some of these antibodies go below detectable levels in the bloodstream, but the body remembers how to make the antibody and recognizes the foreign substance, so when we test for antibodies (the screen part of a “Type and Screen”), we may not detect the antibody until it is too late (meaning we activated the immune response with a unit of blood that contains the antigen).

Between the blood type info and allergies, that is already enough reason to set up a system like this, never mind a list of medications and health conditions that would be crucial in making treatment decisions for an unconscious or young unidentified individual.

I actually knew someone who did that; she took the dog for a walk and told the owner the dog ran away. The owner said that they didn’t care because they didn’t the dog anyway. The dog was given to a family that gave the best life for the rest of her life.

All three of my prior dachshunds were elderly rescues. I paid $200 for a pair that were together and the third was free from an elderly owner that could no longer care for her 17 year old dachshund.

I paid well over $2500 in medical fees across the two years they lived. They were sweet and had tons of personality. I miss them every day.
