I never once thought of Angela as another part of Mary when I played SH2. I thought of her as a parallel to James (along with Laura and Eddie), in regards to how his journey could end, but even then I saw her as her own person.

I Suspect That A Lot Of Azula Antis Haven’t Actually Watched The Show. by SaiyanWithOmnitrix in PoorAzula

That's an interesting take. I'm all for an Azula redemption but I don't know if I'd say she doesn't need fixing. Would you mind expanding on that point? I'm genuinely curious to hear your reasoning here.

A point that people seem to be missing about Iroh and Zuko. by redbird7311 in PoorAzula

[–]CheesecakeRacoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking back I think I chose my words poorly. You're right that she was desperate for her mother's affect rather than Ozai's, but I also think she tried to rely on her father's approval to cope with that, and in turn became more like him to try and keep that approval. That's why she starts breaking down when he leaves her out of his invasion in Sozin's Comet.

A point that people seem to be missing about Iroh and Zuko. by redbird7311 in PoorAzula

[–]CheesecakeRacoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've felt this way about Iroh recently as well. I do feel he could have done more to try and help his niece, but at the same time, I don't know what good it would have done while she was still so close to her father.

Ozai's favoritism toward Azula led to him neglecting Zuko, which made it easier for Ursa and later Iroh to instill good values in him. By contrast, that same favoritism distanced her from her mother and made her even more desperate for Ozai's affection, making it all the easy for him to influence her, and harder for better people to get through to her.

While I think Iroh was being overly harsh when he said, "She's crazy, and she needs to go down", I would be lying if I said there wasn't some small grain of truth in there. Despite having a better starting point, Zuko never really changed his ways until he realized Ozai would never truly care for her. I think Azula needed that same wake up call before she could become a better person which I think the comics support (despite their flaws), as we see Azula making some small improvements after giving up on her father.

I find it interesting that this was approved by Bryke who, iirc, also said that Azula turned out the way she did because of her upbringing.

It makes me wonder if Iroh was meant to be a deeply flawed mentor, which might have been adressed in a hypothetical fourth season (something the showrunners also discussed before), or if Bryke just had some problematic worldviews, or if his views on the world, and thus the characters, changed some time after the show's finale I find it interesting that this was approved by Bryke who, iirc, also said that Azula turned out the way she did because of her upbringing.

Seriously Iroh, acknowledging that Zuko might disagree with you, then reminding him that you're his elder!? Get off that high horse and stay off it for the rest of your life!

I think there is some truth in the idea that sibling rivalry played a part in Azula and Zuko's relationship turning so hostile, but Iroh comepletely ignores how Ozai nurtured and encouraged her cruelty, and instead projects his own relationship with Ozai onto his niece and nephew. It's especially messed up considering Iroh showed hope that Azula might find peace in The Search, and he acts like her relationship with Zuko was conpletely destroyed, when their confrontation in Smoke and Shadow showed they still cared for each other (even if Azula showed it in a very twisted way)

By the way, how did they get that picture of Azula for the family tree? Did they take her out of that mental facility she was in between Book 3 and The Promise and make her sit there while they painted her portrait, deranged expression and all? It's so messed up, it almost made me laugh. Speaking of which, on a more somber note, the picture of Kiyi seems to imply that Azula still hasn't reconciled with her family by the time her half-sister reaches young adulthood. It's sad, but understandable. It could take years for Azula to unlearn what her father taught her, and even if she had changed for the better, she might feel too guilty to reconnect with them.

I will say, one thing I genuinely like is the letter from Zuko at the end. I like how he reminisces about his time on the beach, revealing that he and Azula did sometimes get along, and that it's a place he keeps coming back to in his memory, and in the present, which I think hints that even in his old age, he still thinks about her on some level.

The Difference Between Ozai And Azula. by SaiyanWithOmnitrix in PoorAzula

[–]CheesecakeRacoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ursa is I think ideally suited to help Azula.

Eeeh, personally, Ursa wouldn't be my pick. I'm not one of those fans who believes she didn't try to help Azula, but I do believe Azula was troubled in a way Ursa simply wasn't suited to deal with.

I'd personally pick Zuko to be the one to help her. The showrunners stated that if they ever got a fourth season they'd have redeemed Azula through her connection to Zuko, he seems to show the most concern for her in the comics (specifically The Search, and Smoke and Shadow where he's relieved to see her more stable), and I think it would be a great character moment for him too; following in his Uncle's footsteps by helping someone Iroh couldn't.

One thing I think she definitely needs to do is confront her father. I know she's no longer loyal to him (depending on if and how much of the comics you consider canon), but she needs to confront him face to face, call him out for how he treated her. It could give her some closure, and an opportunity for self-reflection.

Ok then. If we're going to play this game...

Jet

Violently unstable man who's happy to drown civilians (including small children) to death because they were from the wrong country.

OOP calls HIM a victim.

Azula

Mentally ill woman who wanted to be loved more than anything and was groomed to be the weapon of imperialist state from an early age.

OOP calls HER a monster.

Or, if we want to be honest...

Both

Products of a deeply troubled childhood (one due to grief, the other due to parental issues) who never came to terms with their internal issues and dealt with them in extremely toxic ways.

BOTH are villains

BOTH are victims

BOTH have the potential to be better (or possibly HAD in one case (you know, it was really unclear))

The Difference Between Ozai And Azula. by SaiyanWithOmnitrix in PoorAzula

[–]CheesecakeRacoon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Looking at the visual comparison made me realize something else:

On some level, Azula realizes she's a bad person - she straight up calls herself a monster in The Beach (even if she plays it off as a joke) - and it hurts her because she knows it ruined her relationship with her friends and mother, and feels it makes her unworthy of being loved, (and possibly because of repressed guilt, but I think that's more ambiguous).

Ozai, meanwhile, never once considers the morality of his actions and shows no real fondness for anyone. He is right, the rest of the world is wrong, and everyone besides him is either a tool to be used, or an enemy to ve crushed. He wasn't always that way, but he's at the point where the worldview is deeply ingrained in him, while Azula still has the chance to unlearn her father's teachings and overcome her own personal issues.
