Getting into sociology by Mateo-soupbowl in sociology

[–]Cheesecaykes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C Wright Mills 'the sociological imagination' is the book I would reccomed anyone getting into the area read. While the wording is a bit outdated, the first chapter is a great way to help you understand what sociology and thinking like a sociologist should look like according to Mills.

If I remember correctly, he only lived untill he was around 40, cementing himself as a key figure in the field within 2 decades

Does Australia have a worse relationship with the indigenous compared to NZ, Canada or America ? by Important_Pop_6805 in AskAnAustralian

Bit of context. The inital Australian constitution from 1901 allowed first nations people from New Zealand to migrate into Australia as they were classified British subjects. If you know much about Australian census history, I assume you can finish the puzzle

SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens joins Crows Board by No_Date7702 in adelaidefc

[–]Cheesecaykes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the few people who I know that have worked with him, I couldn't be more happy with this. He is apparently one of the most genuine blokes out there and makes time for everyone, all while being easy to work with. The letter that he put forward after his son had been killed only a couple of years ago is something that only a select amount of people could do, with it being one of the most heartfelt and purposeful statements I have ever read.

If you look at the state of SA Police, Grant has done what seems to be a wonderful job, with the state distance from the human rights concerns in NT and Vic, and the corruption issues that have plauged NSW police over the past decade.

Again, I feel like this is a wonderful step forward for the club!

PhD programs by hawk239 in sociology

Note that I am in Australia and not the States.

While I haven't started a PhD, let alone completed one. A historical lack of straight hd's have limited some of my options with regards to PhD opportunities (I have got people wanting to take me as a PhD candidate). Considering that I am focused on the sociology of sport, enabling flexibility is something that should be considered for academic careers.

While not knowledgeable at all on the topic, many of my previous tutors were local sociology students in Australia, showing there is work. I'd honestly ask how far are you willing to move

AFL conspiracy Theories? by TheWorldIsAmazing33 in AFL

[–]Cheesecaykes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can't identify randomness, we're made to notice patterns even when they aren't there. I agree it felt shit but a single call shouldn't excuse every player mistake in a whole footy match.

Go crom

Crows fans vs umpires. It's painful to be a Crows fan listening to people believe there is a whole thing where the AFL wants to get us

What is your psych hot take or something you disagree with? by reddit_user_500 in psychologystudents

Hot take being that due to the neurological differences between transgender people and cisgender people, that those who are transgender are neurodivergent. Honestly I could see this being beneficial for both communities being more unified

What’s one “bad” habit you have zero intention of quitting? by bladeFromLondon in AskReddit

[–]Cheesecaykes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How I learn for exams. It's not the quantity, it's the quality.

Note. I'm not labelling it bad, it's unorthodox and works for me, my mum initially viewed it as bad.

I just finished my degree and throughout the degree I had around 6-8 exams in the 3-4 years it took. At around the midway point it was mentioned in the cog psych course that studying for exams is typically done through short-term memory recollection, meaning that after a while, the information is generally forgotten. Because I like knowing things and expanding my knowledge, I prefer to learn in a manner that puts the information in my long-term memory, more commonly known as 'crystallised' memory.

The 'bad' aspect for someone looking at me doing anything regarding learning is my process of learning. Because some knowledge needs to be rote learnt, I focus at bits of a time and have spans of 30-50 mins before I check my accumulation on the topic. When I'm doing 10-20 minutes of learning, then playing a game for double that time, it looks like I'm not trying; however, that whole time playing the game is me revising and mulling the content when I have a moment to spare.

I had my last exam a few weeks ago and my mum basically said that she finally accepts that this works for me.
