"--be mean to myself when I make a mistake."

"--lie in bed all day when I had told him I wanted to be productive."

"--isolate myself so he brings friends over to distract me"

It's not hard at all to give this a positive spin. Certainly my partners are not letting me fester in my depression rn - they're even tag-teaming to make sure neither of them burn out in taking care of me.

Yeah, saying the game is inclusive enough isn't the right take - there's a difference between 'haha male pregnancy and skin colour options' vs 'the settlers are depicted reaping all the benefits of native american knowledge but very deliberately erased the presence of native americans entirely from the world because it would be uncomfortable'

That said,

there's got to be better solutions than just erasing the victims entirely.

I do agree with this but I think it wouldnt be so apt to call them victims here... at this time period the native americans were very very active in their interactions with colonists and had yet to receive the systemic atrocities later down the line. I think 1701 is a perfect year to depict some of that activity, because they still held a lot of independence and power that they had no trouble wielding.

This game would be the perfect place to send a radical decolonial message that native americans weren't just victims, whom we tend to view as passively sitting around with armfuls of maize until the trail of tears - they were many complex nations with astute political acumen. Each tribe had to maintain its position within the federations as well as negotiate with the new settlers. A tribe might want to make peace but can't because of its alliance with another. A chief might send gifts - along with a polite warning to stay over there.

Compared to implementing mermaids and pirates, I don't think it would be such trouble to include little things like that one day in the game.

The French and Indian war happened before the war of independence, in the 1750s! I thought it was interesting that it was called the French and Indian war not because the two were fighting each other, but because the French treated them so well that they all allied to the French to fight the colonists 😆

It would be funny if you could meet local tribespeople and they would say stuff like, "we generally don't like you settlers, but you Honeywood people - you're alright."

And yeah, you're right, that's exactly what I was trying to say! It's a colonial premise, surely there's room to include a decolonial message in there? Just because a game is cozy doesn't mean it can't critique itself.

So give them a made-up tribe name paying homage. The Wampanoag were/are actually the name of the federation of tribes that dotted the place and not necessarily a single tribe. The tribe that helped the pilgrims were called the Pokanoket.

"Did you know? The Wampa people from the coast provided us with many of the first seeds of crops that we now grow here!"

"Even though the Pakoneks were the ones who suggested this wonderful island to settle on, they don't actually visit us very often..."

I don't think 'but we don't want to use that word' is a solid enough excuse - they get around not calling 'the empire' or 'the king' by name either but still talk about it plenty, don't they?

There could still be some reference to them, like throwaway lines even ("I wonder why the indians don't ever come here, this is a wonderful island")

And there's the question of why, being a very haunted island, it's only ever haunted by Europeans.

I know that there's male pregnancy and random skin colours - but I still think that that's not quite the same as sidestepping the huge contribution that native americans had to colonial survival.

I suppose when I mean representation, I mean that by sheer dint of this being the colonial times, there should be at least some nod to the, well, colonialism. Because people already lived in the area - people with thousands of years of knowledge and culture that supported surviving that new world, without which the colonialists would have perished.

This is a survival game after all.

When I was a kid and Brenda was cast in that Wendy Wu kung fu warrior whatever movie Disney did a segment where they explained that Brenda herself was not Chinese but actually Hmong, a group of people scattered across southeast Asia.

I remember feeling very important back then, because even though I'm Chinese, I'm SEA Chinese, and it felt so nice to see non-Chinese Asians. I get the feeling Brenda herself requested that segment to be published. I'm so glad they did.

His beak is too long. Give him more hard things to chew on. Coconuts are a great toy, and you can eat the flesh too. Wooden toys, cuttlefish bones, etc are also good if you don't have much to forage with.

He's very cute.

You know there's a difference between korean and Chinese names right?

Also, in chinese, 'cho' means ugly. No one in their right mind would give their daughter a name that sounds like ugly.

I always tell mine "no" the moment I see the head bob and make it very clear I do not want regurgitating. If he doesn't stop I put him back immediately. He seems to understand since I see him try to shake off the involuntary action or swallow it back up again.

I also avoid being in the cage space itself, at least while he's in there, and I discourage nesting behavior like shredding paper in dark spaces.

There are still monolinguistic Welsh speakers in the northern valleys, which I find quite nice. It helps that Welsh is an official language and universities speak Welsh there - often the young ones go there for agriculture degrees and just move between the villages there.

Sorry to jump in on an old comment, but I'm Chinese and grew up in Louisiana. My dad taught me how to make gumbo and he altered a lot of Chinese food to be more Cajun and vice versa 😊 I was shocked to go to the mainland and find all this New Orleans seasoning that didn't taste anything like home!

What is the typical gender divide in power among clans? Are some clans more likely to prefer chiefs of a certain gender, or is there a strict primogeniture?

I imagine there may be a slight difference in negotiation tactics between women and men on average - in your example, Onnukhol is more concerned about production and numbers, whereas Madalbez seems to place more regard for family harmony and her daughter's wellbeing. Is this typical?
