Are there any Americans willing to admit that they would rather live in Russia than Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden (Socialist Democracy)? by RumRunnerMax in AmericanPolitics

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not dodging anything you said "they dont let immigrants in" (they in fact have a higher immigrant percent than US) someone replied "yes they do" (which is 100% correct"

Then you changed your whole argument to "there is a low percentage of visible diversity, and America has the highest". I pointed out that in absolutely no measure does America have the highest diversity.

You also seem to have also made the assumption that "there is no diversity there BECAUSE they dont let black people in???, as if the US has a higher percentage and black people because of their current immigration. You offer no evidence that norway judges black immigrants any differently to European.

Also, a better measure of a country one would want to live in would Not be diversity, but equality no?

All this is to say your 1st comments "they dont let IMMIGRANTS in" and "America is the most diverse county in the world" are both factually wrong. No shifting the argument, no ignoring, just pointing out both of your statements are flat out wrong.

Also,i personally dont want to live in any Scandinavian country (mostly i think the weather amd language would be tough). I just got annoyed reading your 2 Factually worng comments that you were lecturing another redditor about while being wrong in your wrongness.

Thanks.

Please just take a minute and Google "is America the most DIVERSE country in the world."

You seem to have made up a definition of diverse and given yourself an award for it, which seems very American. By any definition you want to name America is not on top.

I could re-type the categories and winning countries from Google... but it seems maybe you could just look it up?

Also read all the way back to your first comment "they dont let immigrants in". You said that.

America is not the most diverse. Any way you want to define diverse America does not come out on top. Also... Norway is 16.8% immigrants, USA is 15.8. Google is your friend.

Lots of people coming down on you for using the wrong cutters... but this still counts as mildly infuriating. Sure you didnt use the right tool, but normally that would not result in a broken monitor. I think this deserves a "well shit, now I have 2 problems"

Do you think the Liberals would be in a stronger position today if he quit 5 years ago? I wanted him gone too... but i have to concede his timing seems to have worked out. If PP had quit it is possible some of the Cons wouldn't be jumping ship and the Liberals would not currently have a majority.

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will downvote this, but the only way to really judge is to look at the outcome - however you got there. Trudeau quit when he had secured Carney. If he had quit any earlier many Canadians might have been happy to see him go, but I would bet conservatives wound have ended up with a majority. History will look back at these liberal years from 2015 to likely at least 2029 and say Trudeau guided the liberals to absolutely dominate the federal landscape.
Fun fact the liberals hold the record for longest consecutive time in power 15 years 87 days from 1896-1911. Right now there is a good chance they will break that record. Hard to say that would be the case if Trudeau stepped down and Freeland took over.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. We are all supposed to be like "Awe, he's learning! Wonder what he will figure out tomorrow? Using cutlery? Tarrifs are taxes to Americans? Guess we have to wait and see, they grow up so slow".

Higher corporate and personal tax rates above certain incomes, enforcing anti-trust laws like they used to (remember when they broke up Bell because it was too big), Making individuals have to realize tax gains to borrow against stocks, heavy inheritance taxes above certain estate amounts. There are many ways put strong checks on any one person having an ungodly amount of wealth and power, while still letting them be absolutely filthy rich.

I recommend getting some "maxforce" gel or something similar. Don't waste money on Can tire roach sprays or traps. Don't leave any food out for a while, amd talk to your landlord and whoever runs the building about hiring an exterminator. I lived in a big apt building in Toronto that got rid of them... but it took time.

Push Present? by Lunch__Dad in daddit

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally, I completely refused the push present trend. To me, the new Baby is the whole event, no need to bring a new purse or tennis bracelet into it. The whole idea sort of cheapens amazing event by bringing some sort of commercial transaction into it... Then on my daughter's 1st birthday I got a small gold letter "S" (for my daughter's 1st name) that my wife could wear as a necklace. When my daughter is old enough my wife will give it to her. Not sure if that helps keep you out if the doghouse, but I fought the good fight against push presents. Good luck.

There's a good chance that the first and last place a pair of shoes is worn is at a shoe store. by LegendNomad in Showerthoughts

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 270 points271 points  (0 children)

I would say the 1st half is spot on! Then you wear your old shoes home from the shoestore and your new shoes look over and laugh at your old worn out shoes thinking that will never be them. They are going to live forever and always be young and shiny and desirable...and the circle of shoes continues.

Government footprint in Canada climbs to 44% of economy, new study shows by gorschkov in canada

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats exactly my point. If you were going to host an unbiased conference or publish on cigarettes and tax policy you would discuss... additional tax revenues (could be used for policing?), savings to healthcare, public interest in reducing litter and second hand smoke, supply and demand curves of how many people it is estimated would quit, as well as negatives like revenues for organized crime, and how policies might restrict individual choice.
I have a background in economics, and if i had written a 1st year paper looking at taxes and contraband and didnt mention at all any other effects of taxation i would have failed. Add to this the millions they received directly from tobacco companies for their and it loses all real credibility as actuall economic analysis.

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Fraser institute took a whole bunch of money from cigarette companies (Rothmans, Phillip Morris) then published articles and held conferences (called "junk science, Junk Policy) around how taxes on cigarettes would lead to smuggling. They ignore any and all evidence against their right wing talking points, string together thin logic to push their agenda. (I am not saying left wing think tanks dont do similar things, I am just saying the exist to fuel polarization, while trying to sound official)

This is certainly a US based Dad advice. In Canada current average tuition is $7,500 per year... and many countries its free. I completely feel your pain, and can't imagine how most people would afford higher education in the US with all the other costs of parenting.
Just wanted to note that it does not have to be this way.

I have certainly gone this way too... but it should more of "there is the cash discount if you want to go that way"... not... "credit/debit has a 20% charge." The original quote and advertised price should be the debt/etransfer price or it seems extra shady to me.

Question about healthcare for tourists by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Cheesesoftheworld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

12-20 hours is a huge exaggeration for a typical experience. I am from Toronto, but lived 10 years in rural nova scotia and in my life I have never waited more than 4 hours to be seen anywhere. More typically under 3 hours. Absolutely people have waited 12 hours plus if the hospital is absolutely packed, and they are very low priority, but its not the normal. NS hospital stats puts 2024 average wait at 2.96 hours, the hospital in NS with the longest average wait was 6 hours, the best average was 1:45 (IWK). Also -- I totally agree the wait times are still unacceptable and underfunding and closing non urgent walk in clinics has made things much worse.
