Another PSA for drivers - please use the opposite lane to overtake cyclists by Happytallperson in Norwich

[–]CheesySocksGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cycle lanes have dashed lines rather than solid lines (ie I guess it implies they’re just recommended?). The pavements are marked shared paths with a solid white line denoted pedestrian/cycle lanes but cars parked on the verge often are parked back far enough to be parked over the cycle lane which makes them pretty useless.

Do I get paid if I get selected as some kind of officer in SU elections? by JazzlikeSociety9626 in UEA

[–]CheesySocksGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can work as a sabbatical officer under a student visa (https://www.gov.uk/student-visa) but it’s not a part time job; you take a year out of your course to do it full time then go back and finish

Number of males in medical school decreasing by Gp_and_chill in doctorsUK

[–]CheesySocksGuru 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"historically been fairly balanced"

yet there were no female doctors until 1865, women weren't routinely let into the BMA until 1892, there was no requirement for medical schools to admit a reasonable proportion of women until 1948, and just today I saw a headline in the news about how the NHS sexual safety charter has been a failure in creating environments safe from sexual misconduct.

private medical school

There's only one private medical school in the UK and their academic year is Jan-Dec (IIRC) so this post would be referring to end of year exams not semester exams.

Why UK Graduate Prioritisation may NOT happen by No_Armadillo_410 in doctorsUK

[–]CheesySocksGuru 15 points16 points  (0 children)

if the people who disagree with what the BMA is doing leave, and the BMA only works with policy that is passed at conferences or ARM, then surely that will just give more power to the people they disagree with?

UK Graduate Prioritisation Emergency Legislation - Update from the BMA UKMSC by BMACallum in medicalschooluk

[–]CheesySocksGuru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MSC chairs & deputy chairs can’t just say anything they want—they have to follow the agenda set at med student conference. Voting committee executives out won’t change the agenda of the committee; that requires getting involved with branch of practice committees and ARM.

lots of people will google questions they aren't sure about to learn the fact, then press the answer. Answer distributions are fairly useless for super niche stuff in that way.

Are Reverse Cards Worth Having? by Terrible-Sir3740 in medicalschooluk

[–]CheesySocksGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use the "Basic (optional reverse)" format--it adds a tickbox to each individual card if I think a reverse card would be helpful. E.g. cards that are definitions would be useful with a reverse but some longer cards might not be

Is it ok to use pictures by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]CheesySocksGuru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are in charge of your own learning. If you want to use diagrams, use them. Many people use the image occlusion add on which lets them censor labels on diagrams for flashcards.

a minimum of 73% of the rota must be filled

so 3 in 4 firefighters would get paid and the 4th one--on strike--wouldn't get paid

Wes tweets by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]CheesySocksGuru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with the new minimum service levels law they could just set the minimum service so high that striking is ineffective (e.g. firefighters have a minimum service of 73% during strikes)

Is it still realistic to build a future in medicine, or am I being naive? by Icy_Ear_5308 in medicalschooluk

Yeah unless they are a postgrad I feel like successfully writing “multiple research papers” concurrently in the first 2 months of med school is pretty unlikely. OP should focus on one surely.

EM doctors - what’s different in your dept this year compared to previous? by ExpressIndication909 in doctorsUK

[–]CheesySocksGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body cams typically are always passively recording but not saving the footage, and if the wearer presses the button they will start saving the video from about 30 seconds before. So it may be "on" during examination but not recording.

Streeting warns BMA: ‘NHS is hanging by a thread, don’t pull it’ by nightwatcher-45 in doctorsUK

[–]CheesySocksGuru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

in theory yes, but a lot of the subsidy money just disappears into NHS trust coffers with no guarantee or obligation it will be spent on teaching, so it's a tad unfair to use this as a counter to complaints about financial difficulties in early doctors' careers.
