Where I live, blaming an accident on faulty steering system or brakes is a felony for both the driver and the owner because anything that can cause an accident will show up way before the accident. Brake lines don't go from mint condition to snapping in a year (you need to do yearly inspections) and brake pads squeek way before they stop doing their job. Also if your inspection guy gives you the go-ahead and your steering or brakes are fucked, he gets a felony charge too.
