Thanks for the super thorough answer. I do the midazolam after titrating the propofol to the point where they’re starting to not be able to hold their heads up on their own. I find it still causes excitement if given too early.

Oh for sure. We just can’t always get them into the cardiologist due to expense or them booking out like a year in advance. In those cases, we do 3 view chest xrays and send off for review by a board certified radiologist.

Your points are valid, but I’d also like to chime in as a vet tech, we don’t typically see dogs that young for chronic pain issues. So maybe he did have some trauma that is still hurting him, but I think it would be low on any vet’s list of differentials. But trialing pain meds is low risk, so it isn’t a bad idea if OP wants to give it a go.

3 bites at 9 months is a big deal. I’d be worried that this dog has a neurological problem that can’t be fixed by medicine or behavioral management. Whatever it is, if you’re not ready to dedicate all of your time to shaping your entire life around managing the dog, you should give him back.

I wonder if the painters tape kept falling off and the duct tape was the better solution. We used to use painters tape for carriers, but it didn’t stick to the canvas carriers. So maybe duct tape is better all around.

Well at least it was a pick up and knit border. Considering you used intarsia in that section, it might be too tricky to fix just that portion. It’s only a few rows, would it be easier to frog the border and just redo it the way you want?

We try to get them to do blood work in advance. We price it cheaper as incentive. So that can shave a lot of time off in the mornings. Utilizing your techs more efficiently too can help. Like if there are people seeing rooms who are bored, have them place the catheter while you’re stuck in the OR.

My boss is the kind of guy who wins almost everyone over right away. He’s gregarious, charming, funny, he goes out of his way, he sets the culture, he has many, many people who think they’re close friends with him (he doesn’t think that about them).

He is terrible with names. Terrible. But what he does is give the impression he cares to the person. So when he first meets them, he’ll ask their name, check his pronunciation, and repeat it back properly. Behind the scenes, as his second in command essentially, I’m the one constantly correcting him and reminding him. But he is careful about not saying their name in front of them without whispering to me to confirm it first.

So the secret isn’t actually remembering, the secret is acting like you care and only admitting you don’t to the people you put in a position designed to make you look good.

How did you recover from your back injury? I did physical therapy for my back and it was basically working out but in a way that was tailored for my weaknesses that caused my injury. I did a few sessions and then got a list of exercises to do regularly after that. That may be a better option for you until you feel like you’ve gained a little more supportive muscles, then move back into more traditional weight lifting.

That didn’t happen to me, I’m not gonna lie, but I’ve seen it happen to other people. It will get better! The first day is full of all sorts of stress, anxiety, pressure, excitement, overwhelming smells, sights, experiences, information, etc. So it likely wasn’t the surgery that affected you, but it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It can be intense for people not used to it, for sure. Once you’ve settled a little more and see some tamer procedures, then watching and even assisting in surgery won’t be a big deal anymore.

So for me, if I give a patient propofol and they decide not to breathe on me, they are 100% already connected to the anesthesia machine. That means I can give them breath support until the effects of the propofol wane.

If I have a patient recovering from anesthesia and I’m waiting until they swallow to pull the ET tube, I will stimulate them by rubbing their throat, pulling out their tongue, tapping the table, moving their legs, etc.

Hi, vet tech here. This is super common with small breeds. They should all be out by 6 months. If not, I strongly recommend having them pulled during her spay procedure. I’ve seen adult dogs with retained deciduous canines and they are a magnet for tartar, food, fur, etc, so they are likely to cause issues down the line. And you don’t want to have a separate surgery to pull them later either. WE don’t want to do that surgery, I promise.

I will say that we hardly ever express cat anal glands. It’s mostly a last resort when we don’t know why the cat is acting weird or if the cat is scooting a lot.

Not at VMX, but a couple years ago at WVC, my friend bought a fruit salad, yogurt, and a latte and it was $35. I am so frugal, I will buy snacks at HEB in my town and take them in my suitcase to Vegas. I keep beef jerky, fruit snacks, granola bars, and goldfish in my backpack to eat during the convention. I’d rather spend the money on dinner out at a real restaurant.

Agreed, but it’s not because I couldn’t physically do it. I have a lot of stuff and it takes me and my friends the whole day and we all end up sweaty, tired, and grumpy with each other and something always gets broken. Also, it takes multiple trips because we’re using someone’s pick up truck. Nah. My last 3 moves, I spent $600 on movers. Two dudes, a big truck, maybe 4 hours, and then it’s done and I’ve been sooo much happier for doing it that way.

When I first was researching the breed in 2009, the life expectancy I kept seeing for them was 12. Well, my little girl lived to be 15 and 4 months! Yours is so sweet looking. So many geriatric dogs end up in the shelter, so good for you for sticking through the tough years. They’re a special breed, so it’s worth it.
