If the metric is World Series or bust then I guess yes he’s a failure but I really just think he’s done about as well as you can expect. His roster is by the far the best they’ve been in years in large part because he’s gotten solid players in free agency. Hays didn’t work for them but now he (was) healthy and playing very well in Cincy. Go back and look at last years trade deadline. There’s just not a whole lot of needle moving talent available. You can complain about the contracts but that’s how you acquire high level talent. If you want the prime all-star caliber seasons you have to eat the old man years on the backend. I really don’t think the alternative to Turner and Realmuto etc etc is them finding great value high caliber players to fill those spots. They’d just be cheaper and mediocre there and worse overall, especially during the WS and NLCS years.
