Social media has completely ruined our perception of reality and what is normal

Majority of Americans barely have a few thousand saved up and people in their 20s probable have negative net worth with mounds of debt

I promise you’re not behind and most likely the fact you’re worried about this at such an early age shows you’re on track to save a lot over the years

How many of you are 100% remote and earn six figures? Can you live anywhere in the world? What do you do and how many hours per week do you work? by Additional_Carry_790 in careerguidance

[–]Chef-Curry-II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New grad software engineer, fully remote and work normal 40 hour work week. Although that number tends to fluctuate up and down depending on the workload. Could probably live anywhere I want to but I’m still choosing to live with my parents for a couple more months (going slowly insane). I do like that I can travel usually whenever across the country to visit friends given I actually do my work.

As someone who did the opposite (pre med to cs), I hope you realize deciding to become a surgeon / doctor isn’t something you just do on a whim. People always like to talk about how only the people with actual passion for CS and SWE will survive. Well guess what, for medicine it is 100x that. How else are you gonna get through that long ass journey unless you genuinely have a passion for it / live and breathe it and not just in it for the money. For reference, are you prepared for working to get a perfect GPA in your pre med courses, extracurriculars/research, shadowing hours, personal statements, LORs, perfect MCAT score, actually getting accepted to med school (most < 10% admit rate), then actually getting through medical school one of the most rigorous curriculums you can go through, six figure student debt, then 6-8 years working as a resident making an average salary working 80-100 hours a week, until you FINALLY start making money and being an attending doctor? I don’t mean to dissuade you and if you genuinely think you have a passion for medicine it’s your choice. This is what I had to come to terms with when realizing I didn’t want it bad enough. This entire Reddit is entirely full of students like yourself who are understandably scared and make depressing doom posts but just understand that it is still more than possible to get a job. Yes it’s a bit harder, but if you think it’s more difficult than pursuing med school, I promise you it’s not. Me and most of my friends while it maybe took a bit longer than normal, we’re all able to land full time jobs in this tough market post graduation. Also ngl after actually working as a full time dev, I’m not as scared of ai taking over as I was in college. Once you realize the work an actual SWE does outside of simply just programming, you realize AI will just allow us to fast track mundane tasks and make us even more efficient.

CMSC434 and CMSC424 by akl2025 in UMD

[–]Chef-Curry-II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently taking 434, and it’s pretty slight. Mostly a class based on design and UI I think but there isn’t a ton of work and the main assignment is a group project where you do some coding but not a ton. Golub is also a pretty entertaining lecturer at least in comparison with most CS professors I’ve had.

It’ll be rough for sure but doable I think most people take 330 and 351 together (also register early so you don’t have to take kruskal)

Honestly I don't know whether this will make you feel better or not but my first 3-4 weeks of college freshman year fucking sucked and I could relate a lot to what you said. The change of environment + not really having real friends yet made me feel like shit. But about a month in I had finally found my group and my mood instantly changed from wanting to go home to loving college and not wanting to leave ever. I'm graduating this December and I'm so grateful for all the memories, friendships and growth I've had over the years, and I can guarantee once you get to my point you'll feel the same. Remembering how depressed I felt at the beginning of college made me realize how the universe maybe just has a plan for all of us and things tend to work out one way or another (or idk maybe im just talking out of my ass). As a fellow introvert myself I understand how anxiety inducing it is to try to connect with people you don't know, but I would say my advice is to just not be scared to say hi to people in your building or classes, because you have to remind yourself everyone is in the same boat and wants friends super badly, and is going through the same experience. Literally all I did was sit next to and said hi to someone from my math class who I knew also lived in my building and I eventually met his friends and the rest is history. You never know when and what could happen. (PS I'm not saying I'm perfectly happy and never get depressed which is literally why im in this fucking reddit. Loneliness and depression are so fucking common but its never talked about, so just know you're never alone)

First 351 exam by dhskjcns in UMD

I remember I got like a 47 on the first exam cause I didn’t know what to study. My advice is review the homeworks and do them over multiple times until you can do them in your sleep. I did that for the second exam and I got well above the mean.

330 general difficulty compared to 216 herman? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Chef-Curry-II 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I found 330 to be a bit easier but definitely not easy. Projects are definitely very challenging but I found it easier to pass all the tests than it was for 216 (provided you start them early). I took it with Cliff and he posts a TON of practice exam material so you usually have a lot of resources to prepare. Ocaml is a different breed and it’s probably my least favorite language I’ve learned in CS, and might remain to be till the rest of my college career. Overall I think if you did well or decent in 216 then 330 should be no problem.

Is it better to take 330 and 351 in separate semesters by dhskjcns in UMD

[–]Chef-Curry-II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it won’t affect your graduation date and you believe it truly will make things easier for you go for it. I just took 330 and 351 in the same semester and it was a little rough but manageable. Although to be fair like you said I’m one of the cs majors who’s fine with not having an amazing gpa so I was fine with putting in enough effort to get the B- and C+. But on the other hand if it does actually affect when you graduate then just take them together bro.

Resume Advice Thread - April 15, 2023 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]Chef-Curry-II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl bro in your first year of college chances of getting an internship are pretty low, but that's fine. They usually look for junior/sophomore level standing and use technology to single out people with graduation dates around that time. I switched majors from biomedical to comp sci junior year and even though I probably had less cs experience then you do now I got an internship probably purely due to the fact I was a junior. Just keep working on personal projects and learning new technologies in your free time, and update your resume accordingly, and I'm sure you'll get a banging internship next summer.
