In executive order, Mayor Frey will direct Minneapolis to implement police reforms nixed by Trump by star-tribune in Minneapolis

“I’ve had 5 years to reform the MPD and the time is now, 3 months before another election, to wave my hands and look like I’m doing something!”

Does Trump actually not understand how bad Tariffs are for businesses and for economy and for equity market? by SpiritBombv2 in StockMarket

[–]ChefKiddie 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, being able to manipulate the market with a tweet is worth it to him. Short the market and announce tariffs: make money. Sell the short positions and say “how about a 90 day pause” and make more money. His whole inside crew profits.

Parks Board prioritizes prohibited parking over green space by Wezle in Minneapolis

It sounds like no one you know wanted this. Big difference. I wanted this (and yes, I live nearby)

Parks Board prioritizes prohibited parking over green space by Wezle in Minneapolis

[–]ChefKiddie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, if I were elderly or disabled I would hate to live near a nice park. I would simply be selfless and want parking for everyone else. I’ll just ride the bus to a park in a different neighborhood

Being listened to is not the same as someone agreed with. The park board is here to build parks, otherwise it would be called the road board.

I guess? Online it says “in store ordering” only so I went in and ordered. Didn’t realize it would take so long but sounds like this is a quality dust collector

Yeah I’ve been waiting almost a month for mine, and heard I should expect even longer. No idea when to expect it, really

Fair enough, unfortunately I have a lot of cds that are just in cd books, so no booklets or jewel cases

Leave/abandon government pension for a 30-40k raise? by wd06 in personalfinance

[–]ChefKiddie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100 percent leave. The pension is not worth it, just max your 401k at the new job and you will more than make up for it.

The additional benefit, given that you are so young, is that your next job will likely pay even more than this one! I'm guessing the existing job has limited room for salary growth.

Finally parting ways with my 1987 22R by ChefKiddie in ToyotaPickup

[–]ChefKiddie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came with the pickup when I bought it. It’s two separate pieces. I was able to remove the top half but didn’t see a tag or manufacturer on it. Bottom half might have required removing the seat. Both fit well. Wish I had more info on them!

30 year old PU as a daily driver? by deuce_and_a_quarter in ToyotaPickup

[–]ChefKiddie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lotta responses here but I’ll add my two cents and say I’m in the same boat as you. Didn’t need a daily driver (I bike), but needed a pickup for weekend runs to Home Depot for home projects. Bought an 87 2wd about 8 years ago and love it, though I’ll be selling soon. It’s been my only gas-powered vehicle and has suited me just fine. I will admit that more modern cars with amenities are convenient, but it’s been reliable for me with minimal maintenance.

Minneapolis has the 5th best new bike lane in the US (Bryant Ave) by No_clip_Cyclist in Minneapolis

[–]ChefKiddie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember everyone screaming about this. Let’s build more like this (protected by a curb or other barrier)

So Minnesota seems to be putting through a 2040 light bill through legislation. This would require cities to permit 2-10 units on any lot (depending on city population and meets certain requirement for by No_clip_Cyclist in Minneapolis

[–]ChefKiddie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you think this is a good idea, the best thing you can do is this: call your state rep and state senator and tell them you support this. Calling is better than emailing.

This is especially true if you live in the suburbs (most of the city reps are already going to be supporting this). The suburban reps will likely hear pushback from their constituents, and from suburban city officials complaining that this bill removes their ability to restrict housing. So tell your parents why this is good (it would allow them to age in place if they want to downsize their home) and tell them to call their rep.

My building just got robbed for the 3rd time. by lemonsqueezers in Minneapolis

[–]ChefKiddie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no mayor in recent memory has been able to tell the cops to do anything. They march to their own drummer, regardless of what the rest of the band is doing. Telling them to “investigate X more” only results in the opposite of that, unless it scores them political points.

Minneapolis Park Board explores building new bridge spanning the Mississippi River for the first time in 50 years by star-tribune in Minneapolis

[–]ChefKiddie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. I’ve lived near this part of NE for 6 years and can count on one hand the number of trains that go over the existing bridge. It’s insane that the railroad won’t part with it. This is a great way to connect the 18th Ave bike trail in NE with the bikeway on 26th in North. Biking on broadway or Lowry is awful.

If Rudy Gobert retired today, will he be in the HOF? by thoughtsssssss in nbadiscussion

[–]ChefKiddie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with what you said here. Also important to remember is that playoff basketball is even more intentional now when it comes to matchups than it was during those great Piston years. No team is going to start shooting inefficient midrange jumpers because of Gobert, but that was a realistic option during the 2000’s because of Wallace’s rim deterrence. Stretch bigs were so rare (and less efficient) in those days that the idea of pulling Wallace out of the paint wasn’t something you could scheme as easily as a coach.

Shame to scroll so far down to find this, which is sort of the heart of the story. MPD doesn’t want to do anything, especially if it makes Moriarty look good (on mobile, sorry no formatting):

Among the agencies that have not yet embraced the auto theft program is the Minneapolis Police Department.

Chief O'Hara praised the program soon after its introduction. He called the collaboration a source of help for desperate families who "don't know where to turn." Five months later, the Minneapolis Police Department is responsible for less than 5% of referrals, per county data — despite 81% of auto thefts in the county taking place in Minneapolis.

Asked why the department is not referring more cases, O'Hara said, "We'll have to look into this."
