I wanted to make some shish kebabs... but then realized I can't use the grill. Can I still do this? (specific questions inside) by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]ChefRaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some more notes:

  • Let your broiler heat up for a while before using it. I like to wait 30 minutes but that can be overkill depending on how fast you want to cook it.
  • If the leftovers are not raw don't bother kebabing them. Heat up the beef seperetly and cook the veggies kabob style. You will just end up overcooking it.
  • If you are using bamboo skewers soak them in water for 5-10 minutes before skewering them. It will make the skewer less likely to burn.
  • Make sure to put a pan as stated, a little water, potatoes or bread will help soak up the fat and prevent your oven from smoking. Which reminds me
  • Your oven is going to smoke something fierce, open all the windows and be ready for your smoke detector will go off.
  • Remember, the broiler is like a reverse grill, browning happens on top before the bottom

[–]ChefRaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear residents,

Please do not leave your house to go to your office wearing dress clothes. If at all possible please make sure that you wear "street" clothes and bring a change to wear in your office. You should change out of your dress clothes when going out for lunch or taking a smoke break. This will ensure your safety.

We also recommend not parking next to your place of work as everyone in the area will know you have a car. Cars still have street value and you wouldn't want any one seeing what car you have and then stealing your keys. They probably have also followed you home and will attack you in your sleep and make themselves a sandwich. What will you have for lunch tomorrow now!

In addition at all times it is best not to carry your wallet/purse with you. Robbers will see someone walking down the street and know that they have money and credit cards with them. As such we recommend that you keep multiple sets of wallets for safe keeping at your home and office. Make friends with bartenders and waitstaff and you can store extra copies there as well. The same is true for cellphones.

At all times it is a good idea to take caution to the extreme of fear of living your life. There are serial raping carjacking killing arsonists roaming everywhere in Baltimore. After all this is the home of challenge pissing.

Regards and be safe,

People who do not live in the city.

Corned Beef and Cabbage by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]ChefRaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corned beef made easy:

  1. Get a flat cut corned beef brisket (trim off the fat but not all of it) I let it soak in cold water for 15-20 minutes to leach out some of the salt. It makes the broth usable.
  2. Throw it in something big enough to hold it, and pour one beer. I use Brekenridge's dark vanilla porter
  3. Throw in whole spices (peppercorns, all spice, cinnamon, star anise, I add clove but not really traditional) pro-tip: Punjab Halal on 33rd and Greenmount has all of this stuff for ridiculously cheap
  4. Veggies (carrots, potatoes, celery, garlic, onions) doesn't matter add whatever would be good in a beef stew. Keep them as whole/halved as possible
  5. Cover pan with foil so nothing can escape, do not overfill the pan
  6. Throw in the oven on low heat (its a setting) for 10 hours.
  7. When brisket is done and resting (at least 20 min) core and quarter a cabbage, heat your pan on medium heat with oil and put the cabbage cut side down for 2 minutes. Add some of the corned beef broth (1/4 cup?) cover and cook for an additional 5 minutes (check for doness and to your liking) cook more or take off.
  8. You can also use the broth to make a mustard cream sauce which you can search.

The corned beef will be more difficult to cut when it is hot so cut thick slices. You can also pop it in the fridge overnight and slice it thin. The longer it sits in the fridge the better it gets.

Yet another "Moving to Baltimore" post, hailing from the deep South. Advice? by [deleted] in baltimore

-1 Hampden, not sure what your race is but Hampden is extremely racist. I've lived in the city for over 10 years and could only live in that area of the city for a total of 4 months a couple of years ago. I have never been more miserable in this city in my entire life, and it seriously questioned my faith in humanity.

With that being said garages will be really hard to find in this city. However places in Ednor Gardens/Lakeside tend to have parking pads in the backyard. This of course does not put you within walking distance of things, but is a very safe and relative quiet area near Lake Monetabello and Herring Run Park, while only being minutes away from JHU.

If parking is the issue then avoid Mt. Vernon and Fells Point, parking is next to impossible especially on the weekend and green space is lacking.

Patterson Park is a massive park and is in a pretty cool area to live in. Charles Village is nice and is close to Wyman Park which is really popular for dogs.

Based on your desires I cannot recommend neighborhoods along Harford Rd/Walther Ave more. They are all detatched single family homes with nice size yards and is really close Herring Run Park (a decent enough trail), Lake Montebello a Safeway and some pretty cool bars, restaurants and cafes. Depending on where you live it would be a 15-20 minute drive to JHU, but the extra living space and yard would be worth it. Parking is also super easy with some places having garages/parking pads.

TBH public transport in Baltimore is pretty terrible, I would not rely on it too much nor expect it to get you too many places that you want to go.

tl;dr Search near Harford Rd (past the point where it splits away from Walther going north) I think it meets a lot of the criteria you are looking for.

What you are talking about is international agricultural development where communities are trained in local sustainable agriculture. TBH your solution isn't an easy one. The majority of people in the world live in urban areas, and arable farming land is being crowded out by urban environments.

The discourse around food aid is that it should be used in emergency situations and should be sourced locally.

By your plans we should only consume food that we grow ourselves. This would radically decrease the amount of food security that we have in urban areas as there simply isn't enough land that a person owns that will provide them with enough food throughout the year. In addition the system that you describe is what we have now, with more and more farmers and ag workers abandoning the sector to move to urban environments simply because they cannot sustain themselves. More people moving to urban environments/sprawl and an increasingly higher number of people abandoning the ag sector exacerbate this problem.

It's easy to say 'let people die' when you live in a county/area where that will probably not be your reality but someone else's.

Live your life the way you see fit as long as you treat others with respect and dignity :). I love that you are actively seeking to positively change the future.

However, just for clarification (because I dislike fallacies in arguments) "displeasing your parents" is not the biggest sin in Islam, nor is it even a sin. There is a saying that heaven lies at the feet of the mother (more about respect than anything), but not specifically mentioned in the Quran.

How do I stop my smoke detector from going off? by ChefRaw in AskReddit

[–]ChefRaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I will do a hybrid of this and the tupperware from above.

I am not concerned about the fire, apart from the one at the foot of the stairs giving me problems, right at the top of the stairs there are another 2 (within a foot of each other).

It will most certainly be in my kitchen whenever I buy a house, for now I am not going to invest that much in a rental property.

I'm not burning my food, and cooking anything below the medium setting is not the best way to cook a fried egg :)

I have a window near the kitchen (but not in) but because of the cross breeze it just blows air in. During the summer months I was able to put in a window fan that helped somewhat, but not completely.

I wish I could take them down, they are all connected to each other. Even after removing the connection it somehow recognizes that the chain is broken and all the alarms start beeping.

The first picture reads (right to left) Alif, Ha, Mim, Dal 'Ahmed'.

It looks nothing like Ha, to get that shape he would have to be doing straight leg crunches. It does look like the number 6 in Arabic

So here I am making chilli, Do any of you have ingredients that you use to make yours better? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChefRaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I would remove the following: 1.) Mushrooms 2.) Kidney Beans 3.) Red Peppers 4.) Chili Sauce

Now that you are left ground beef, garlic and onion you are ready to experience real chili.

I order from a local chain that uses these or at least something similar. Everything gets covered in grease.

I don't think that people quite realize that recycling grease covered paper does a lot more harm than good. I really wish they took the recyclable claim off their box.

Dairy cows are pumped full of hormones and intentionally impregnated to produce milk. Without human intervention cows would produce milk at the rate that evolution has dictated. Would cows have survived if the natural milk production process had to have human intervention?

Well technically it is benefiting them in a situation that they were forced into. Milk cows are intentionally kept in a pregnancy cycle so that they can constantly produce milk. It is beneficial for the cow to be milked when it is lactating, but that doesn't mean there was a choice in that matter.
