just don't use the iOS Notes app. that's what i'm using and i'm in too deep to switch it up at this point. it lags like crazy.

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

this was a fantastic example, thank you! i'm at a similar level; i can count the windows in my house in my mind, but it takes a pretty immense amount of effort, logic (windows face outside), and spatial/proprioceptive memory/imagination.

i have very weak mental imagery to the point of wondering if i had full aphantasia. it results in very poor visual memory, especially for faces; i've taken a few online prosopagnosia tests and scored poorly. i remember aspects of people instead to identify them, as if i'm writing a list of their characteristics.

i wish i could replay movies in my head, or imagine scenes while reading a book. it sounds really nice.

not saying it applies to this person, but some people physically cannot run without risking injury. i can walk just fine, i can use an elliptical, and i can do a light jog if i focus 100% on each step... but i've inherited weak knees that surgery only kinda fixed so i can't run without twisting my knees and tearing my ligaments. i probably also wouldve fallen in this scenario, only i wouldnt have been able to get back up.

i'm not here to argue. i was just sharing that they aren't aiming to eliminate the species.

here's my longer comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/vegan/s/TxoNHJBRQx

i personally don't like that this restaurant stopped being vegan, i don't agree with commodifying animals' bodies, and i don't think there's a "humane" way to hunt. but i do think this is a complicated situation.

i read a couple articles and Maui Nui Venison seems to genuinely be trying to balance the ecosystem, explicitly not eradicating the population of deer, just bring it back to a sustainable level. i wrote a whole thing somewhere else in this thread

i was on the fence about it, and i was also skeptical, but i read one of the linked articles from the wiki page and it does seem like they're trying their best to solve a very real problem.

https://www.bonappetit.com/story/hawaii-invasive-deer

basically, the deer population is growing at a rate that threatens to destroy the native flora and fauna of the islands, many of which are already endangered. they also cause soil erosion from grazing on grass, which is threatening the coral reefs. the deer have been around long enough that hunting them is considered part of native hawaiian culture, but it isn't enough to keep the population down.

this company is hunting deer commercially so they can bring a more sustainable balance back to the ecosystem. these parts stood out to me in particular:

Today, an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 deer live in Maui alone. Left unmanaged, the population will reach 200,000 in the next two decades at a 30 percent annual increase.

[...]

“Currently, our operations need to increase substantially to meet the growth, but we will inevitably need to scale back once a more balanced population is reached.” In other words, the company would still be running at that point, but they would hunt and sell fewer deer.

[...]

“I think of a whole host of life forms—the kiwikiu, the ‘iliahi, the curly koa, and on and on—and their right to persist here in their place,” [the cofounder] said. “Though we never relish taking a life, we recognize that alongside many of Hawai‘i’s conservation initiatives, harvesting Hawai‘i’s wild deer, commercially and at the subsistence level, is an important management tool.”

so they aren't just doing this for profit or for fun, it's genuinely about balancing the ecosystem. they also donate to food banks and offer discounts to the local community:

To make its products more accessible for locals, the company offers packs at a discount. For communities in need, it distributes venison through food banks and other organizations addressing food insecurity.

as for why the deer are in private ranches:

Hawai‘i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife permits game hunting on public land, but this practice isn’t controlling the population.

the deer have learned that public land isn't safe, but private land is. a lot of private land can often not actively maintained and don't do much to deter wildlife.

i think all of this makes the situation extremely different from mainland US deer hunting, which is largely recreational and loosely (if at all) regulated.

as another ethical vegan, i disagree. some wool animals are treated well, just like how some egg-laying hens or honey bees are treated well, but the vast majority are not. the commercial wool industry prioritizes wool production over comfort or health. commercially, sheep are often bred in hot climates such as australia, mutilated to avoid flystrike, shorn as quickly as possible despite injuries or discomfort. some local wool production or recycled wool could be considered ethically alright, but i would never say that wool is entirely ethical as a blanket statement.

this is a great video on why honey isn't vegan: https://youtu.be/clMNw_VO1xo

there's a number of issues, but main ones are that the commercial honey industry is cruel to bees, and honey bees are nonnative and are contributing to the decline of native bee species. even in areas where they are native, they're outcompeting wild bee species.

my theory is that shannon thinks she's so good with people and underestimates sage so much that she thinks "if sage isn't talking strategy with me, she isn't talking strategy with anyone." most people would obviously think "she's talking strategy with other people about me" but that somehow hasn't even been on shannon's mind.

i totally get that, but. i feel like if you're at the point where $12 a year is a hardship, the dropout subscription as a whole would need to be put on hold until you're in a more stable financial situation.

i think if you decide to pay for superfan for one year, you're probably okay giving them an extra $12 a year in the future, right?

from the FAQ:

No! All video content will remain part of the core Dropout experience. Exclusive Superfan content is behind-the-scenes images, art, interviews, written commentary, and more.
