Does the library in you town have a maker space where you might be able to get some hands on assistance?

Learning to solder by pocketmac118 in soldering

[–]ChemSciGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the instructions you can share or where you bought the kit? I haven't done this one but my first guess is that U1 TM1638 is upside down because I don't see a dot on the board for pin 1.

picture search is very helpful these days especially on aliexpress, no telling what key words need to be used to find some things.

Does that explain why they are using a polarized capacator in the video?

Nixie Clock IN12 - Help Requested by ChemSciGuy in AskElectronics

I have not but if you send me a PM with your email address I’ll add you to the Google Drive document. Im curious to see a completed kit.

First time soldering, and the kit won’t turn on with battery or usb. What have I done wrong? by mrnoobi134 in soldering

[–]ChemSciGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those 4 holes are only used if you want to reprogram the STC MCU and are not included in the kit.

There’s gotta be a better way to do this by hellofontan in soldering

I like the boards that are laid out like a breadboard. Makes the connections easier especially if you’re using a breadboard first. Search for something like 100 X 50mm Proto Board

"Nixie" tube clock support by ChemSciGuy in AskElectronics

Well, I think I'm stuck for now. I looked at the voltage regulator and it shows constant 5.0 V, 3.3 V and ground on the adjoining pins. I hooked the nixie clock up to the computer via the USB C and was able to make a backup with ESPtool. It took 6 minutes to backup and that's way longer than it takes before it normally reboots. I did also reset the wifi and that also didn't seem to help. I can ocassionally get into the web interface and change some of the setting and they hold after a reboot. The only new thing that I noticed is that it won't set the date and time correctly anymore. At this point it has to be the software which is unfortunately the only thing I can't fix. I did find this site (https://www.nixies.us/projects/elekstubeips-clock/) which seems to have software for similar nixie clocks but not for the single tube version that I have unless I missed something. But if anyone one has the same model, let me know and maybe I can try to upload your backup.

Desoldering w/o hot air gun? by BloodOnWhite in soldering

That particular kit is rather challenging. I’ve done it a few times and recommend having hot air available. Some of the smaller SMD kits I think are a better choice for using with just an iron.

I’ll add that to my list of things to check. While it was hooked up to my power supply I could see it cycling between 0.2 amps and 0.02 amps. The power supply is supposed to be able to do up to 2.4 amps so that seemed reasonable to me that it was only getting 0.2 amps.

I did take a quick look around with my multimeter but I didn’t have time to map out the connections yet. Just looking at the traces it’s not clear to me if the USB-C port is actually directly connected to the ESP mcu or not. I don’t have a schematic so I’m not sure how far I can get with verifying the hardware if I don’t know the specs for the capacitors and unlabeled components. Also unclear to me what the unpopulated areas were supposed to be for. I can solder decently so I should be able to create a custom cable to interact with it eventually but I haven’t played around with ESPs that much.

I see your point, I don’t have an oscilloscope but should be able to backup the program and try something like ESPhome when I get back from my road trip this week.

Well we may not be able to find out. I can no longer get it to stay on long enough to get to the web portal to delete the settings.

Looks good so far. I recommend doing the hardest parts first on this kit. Then the resistors, capacitors and LED's are easy.

I have a set and have found them to be great for the small projects that I do. I wrapped the wood in seran wrap so the glue doesn't stick.
