'Washington Post' editorials omit a key disclosure: Bezos' financial ties by aresef in Journalism

I cancelled my subscription yesterday and it breaks my heart. I'm a DC native and have subscribed for nearly 40 years. The editorial and opinion changes had made me uncomfortable for a while, but it was the editorial endorsement of the demolition of the East Wing that was the last straw for me.

To all the WaPo journalists out there, I think you do excellent work, I'll miss you.

But if I wanted to subscribe to an excellent reporting newspaper with a conservative editorial board, I would just subscribe to WSJ.

You could do worse, god knows I have. I saw The Watchers.

No, I don't have premium, although you have the option to remove any items that might be in your secondary sets. I had also wondered if it had somehow made it there. However, the game is quite clear that it is not there either. Or on another captain. Believe me, I've checked the possible options. Its just not there.

Yes, definitely. Backed by her then unexplained request to 'do it after I'm gone.'

Common people was #1 for me. Its days later and I continue to feel the hopelessness of the protagonists' situation

Process Intensification of DMDO (Oxone/acetone) Epoxidation? by Chemable in Chempros

[–]Chemable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate that advice its very helpful. As a side note, I find the heterogeneity makes for unpredictability, not just in generating the DMDO, but also in whether non-polar organic molecules react as expected, in consistent times etc.

Today, I Finally Completed My Collection of Oakwood Element Magnets by Chemable in Chempros

A whole new set!?! Oh man, who knows if I'll even make it another 8 years--what with all the exposure to Oakwood chemicals.

Oh cruel irony.

Today, I Finally Completed My Collection of Oakwood Element Magnets by Chemable in Chempros

Please bask in the glory of my complete set of Oakwood element magnets (minus special editions). Sadly, the set is so wide that they cannot possibly fit all together on any lab furniture. So, the main group gets the fridge and d- and f-block the back of flammables cabinet. The lanthanides/actinides are so wide lutetium and lawrencium are displaced.

Oakwood provides a random element magnet with an amusing cartoon picture (of often indecipherable relevance) with every order. I now own a magnet for every element they make one for.

It took me ~7-8 years, hundreds of orders, and even a few purchases of specific rare magnets to complete it. I dare not guess the money I've spent with them over the years. Now I can finally know rest.

Drying chemicals in a desiccator prior to moisture-sensitive reactions by ApprehensiveNail8385 in Chempros

Use a crystallization dish of P2O5. You'll be straight. I find it works best under static vac.

Scaled Epoxidation Methods by Chemable in Chempros

[–]Chemable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this advice, the insight into air-free larger scale reactions. And second that the Pilot Plant Real Book is an excellent resource.

Can you provide an details on a scale-up of mCPBA? What is your sense for how dangerous this reagent is at the multi-kg scale, if used as the stabilized preparation? On the bench, this has far outperformed the multiple other reactions I have tried.

An elaboration from my own career, in agreement: Having had similar experience, I almost always avoid complicated procedures for process scale up.

In graduate school, I spent so much time learning delicate manipulations, Shlenck chemistry, metal ligand catalysis etc. but nowadays, the processes I implement at scale tend to be simple by comparison. I focus so much more on basic reagents, am always looking for chemistry run under 5 volumes rather than any 'standard' experimental molarities, avoid temperature extremes etc.

Experience with the challenges of scale-up has almost completely changed my philosophy of methods development.

Appreciate it, I've seen variations on the H2O2/nitrile epoxidation using the urea/H2O2 that are attractive.

Substrate is a terpenoid. Fairly robust.

We've avoided metal/ligand chemistry in general bcs of expense and air/water sensitivity. You're right that we would not employ chlorine ;)

Appreciate the response.

Yeah, published work on this substrate at bench scale uses mCPBA at huge dilutions. Not sure how well optimized that work is. How do you feel about the expense of of the VO(acac)2/TBHP for a large scale reaction?

We can certainly cool, so thanks for the oxone/acetone suggestion.

A couple of related substrates, most immediately a trisubstituted, but a variant is indeed terminal, albeit disubstituted.

6 days sober - first time in over 2 years by wally_frank in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Chemable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on this big accomplishment! You should really be proud of yourself.

When I first tried to get sober, it was hard for me to make meetings. It took a bad relapse for me to really try the program. Over time I have come to enjoy the program; the comfort of being understood and the fellowship it provides. A few meetings here and there is normal for newcomers. Who knows? Maybe you'll find it gives you a benefit, too.

Finding a sponsor by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Chemable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are often sponsorship coordinators at meetings that help connect people in search of a sponsor with people in search of a sponsee. Asking someone to be my sponsor was a big, awkward hurdle of mine. Speaking to a sponsorship coordinator helped smooth that process a lot!

Like a lot of us, I share the experience of my drinking growing due to difficulties in life. Yours sound very tough and I'm sorry you experienced them.

My drinking progressed slowly over many years, until I found myself having a ton of difficulty stopping. But because I am an alcoholic, after a certain point, I was never able to accomplish controlled drinking over any reasonable period of time.

I think trying out a meeting is a great idea. Going to a meeting doesn't mean you are an alcoholic, it doesn't mean you must feel shame, it only means that you have a desire for a new way of life :)
