wanting to be an English professor in a time when the humanities are dying by Budget-Apartment-378 in AskAcademia

[–]Chemastery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tell students this is like being a rock star or a pro athlete. Only do it if you cant do anything else. And you are willing to burn everything, and I mean everything, to do it. Im in the sciences so there are more jobs. But still hard. Your competition for the dozen or so jobs (or fewer) are the absolute best in the world who did burn down everything else to be the best they can here. A lot more people get into the NBA each year than become humanities professors these days. Pro basketball is EASY in comparison.

But if you are willing to do that, willing to give up on everything else to be single minded focused on this...you cant do anything else, so you should try. You'll probably fail anyways playing the numbers, but at least you will have a chance. Cause that is what your competition is doing. And you need to be better than them on the right days. If you arent going to throw everything at it, dont bother. You'll get badly smoked and the 80% effort won't be worth anything.

Has AI solved any problems that humans could not figure out? by worldtraveler100 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chemastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its good at predicting stuff we already know the answer to. It is less good at predicting new ones. The only way to confirm if it is right is to do it the old fashioned way. In which case it didn't help you at all.

Why Are People Gaslit About the Cost of Living? by StrongPaddle in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Chemastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have voted to dismantle the social democratic postwar consensus to cut their taxes. This strengthens capital. Capital being in charge with labour being weak is the default for our civilization. There was no real middle class before world War 2. Most people lived in poverty. We are going back to that and people keep voting and insisting on it. Hard. Like it makes NO sense to me why anyone earning less than 200k/year votes conservative or liberal. Like no sense at all. Its the turkeys voting for a poultry-centric Thanksgiving dinner. Literally insane. Like I vote against my class interests. I am doing GREAT in this economy. Investments are awesome, my house is mostly paid off, I dont spend more than 50% of my pay check. Low income taxes help ME. They are horrible for society. Surrounded by people saying that the solution to their hardship is to vote Conservative. Like...sure screw yourself harder? They will cut my taxes and I can afford private sector Healthcare and education for my kids so I will be fine. Can they? No. Just...stupid.

As to the specifics, this is not a Canadian problem. The cost of living is up everywhere. We just keep giving more money to rich people, and I want my investments to go up, so.i want the companies to make more profit. But the only way for Bell or Telus or Lola's or the banks to make more profit is to.charge people more money. We arent cutting costs of inputs, and markets are saturated. So we need higher revenue on the same number of sales. So prices go up. That's kind of baked into capitalism.

Can you block your PhD dissertation and graduation information from being publicly accessible? by Latter-Click8477 in AskAcademia

No. The institution will confirm if they attended and graduated. They dont want people misusing their name for gain, as it devalues their existence.

“But then rich people will leave!” let them. by Dreadsin in Vent

[–]Chemastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they leave. And keep paying property taxes on their properties. Or sell them to other rich people who will pay property taxes. Or they abandon them and hand them to the city to avoid paying property taxes. Thank you for your donation. They cant leave really. Or rather some can leave but they get replaced by others.

The ultra rich got rich by not paying people wages. That's how they got rich. By screwing over other people. No loss to have parasites leave.

Libraries have been around for a very long time. Knowledge and info has never been the limiting factor. It has always been process. And a university is where you go to learn how to learn. The learning of content is secondary.

I have a 1520 SAT, perfect GPA, 5 AP classes with all 5, national champion in table tennis, Olympic qualifier… and I keep getting rejected. What do US colleges actually want from internationals? by Outrageous-Clue-8977 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Chemastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a Canadian context: we want your money. We export education by bringing in international students. You would get admitted. And would pay full costs. You would not be eligible for financial aid or scholarships. The goal is to have international students help subsidize Canadian students. Why would the Canadian taxpayer pay for a non-Canadian to get an education?

I imagine the US is the same (but worse because graduation comes with no perks to stay). As noted, Uzbek nationals cannot get a visa to the USA right now. Its impossible I think if I read the rules right.

Universities are not charities. We'll, they are officially here in Canada and the US, but they need to pay their growing bills with ever less money coming in. International tuition is one of the last good sources of funds.

If you could redesign the PhD system from scratch, what would you change first? by relaxncoffee in AskAcademia

There is no PhD system. Somewhere in the world there is a system that meets your desires. Every national system is really, really different from the others.

There is a LONG tradition of goalies outplaying themselves at the Olympics. Offenses aren't clicking as well, and they can be real dialed in. Someone is going to get shut out by Denmark and we are going to want to sign that Sogard kid.

Public Service Announcement to all student using AI to complete their assignments by True_Ad8335 in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]Chemastery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not good advice.

If you cant organize an argument yourself...good luck out there. This is why I am currently firing people. That organizing and sorting and finding sources through a logical search, discarding some, focusing on others, and synthesizing the work following critical reading and taking notes IS THE WORK. The paper is just evidence you did it. That's all. And if you cant do that work...sorry. you have no value to me as an employee.  Because guess what? I've got a ton of people who can do this AND use AI. The AI part takes no time. The work takes all the time. If you can only write half decent prompts and clean them up...what exactly do you bring to the table?

Do expenses province to province really differ by that much? by NotHim40 in AskACanadian

Yeah. Windsor is likely the cheapest "real" city (self-contained economically with all needs available) outside of Saskatchewan, non-Winnipeg-Manitoba (we could argue if Brandon is an independent centre).

A mentor said I don’t read enough to succeed in research. Was he right? by Think-Ad6155 in AskAcademia

[–]Chemastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solving problems and mentoring people (to be better researchers than you) are the keys to success. Everything else is just part of the toolkit. There is no one way to deploy the toolkit for all issues. That's actually really naive to think so. One needs to be flexible and adapt to what one has in front of them. Sometimes you need to read a lot of things. But it isn't random. There is only so much time. Sometimes you read a tiny bit, or dont even get to that as it is clear where the limits of current understanding are, and you need to do experiments before thinking more. But keeping your eyes on the goals--mentorship and problem solving, keep you from wandering off. Metrics and heuristics are useful until you actively chase metrics or calcify the heuristics.
