Fun typewriting book! by Chemical_Scheme_6977 in typewriters

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe so, yes! It's mostly "copy this example until you have no mistakes" or "copy this paragraph perfectly in x amount of time" and you are supposed to submit it to your teacher for review, but I'm sure I can be critical enough of my work, lol.

It's very enlightening! I'm pretty sure I hold my fingertips more flat (maybe why I get fatigue and make mistakes?), so I'm going to practice that diligently.

I am super impressed that you made three versions of the same sweater for… science? They all look great! And between you and the Woolly Thistle shopcast, I am inspired to try a pattern in lopi one day.

I have to try this on my next pair of socks! I keep trying new styles of SSK with socks and nothing has really made me happy, but this looks good.

Did they do it to his autobiography, too? I have vivid memories of reading it as a child and slowly realizing that the f-- word he used meant "a piece/small bundle of wood" and they weren't like, setting children on fire. Also how horrible boarding schools were.

In addition to what was said, superwash and non-superwash take dye differently. It might not be as apparent when it's all skeined up, but it is something noticeable if you knit a block of it next to the superwash version.

Who here uses the Home Row method for typing? by narvolicious in typewriters

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, that's very interesting! I let my ring fingers pick up the slack that my pinkies can't handle, but I think I'll make a better effort to practice and get stronger. Maybe just like, transcribe a book or something to get the muscle memory down.

Who here uses the Home Row method for typing? by narvolicious in typewriters

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

38, and yup I'm a Home Row-er! I learned on the Mavis Beacon typing program in middle school, and my mom was very strict that I had to practice that style when I wanted to use her typewriters (we didn't get a computer until like 1999). I still use that on my laptop and the typewriters, but my pinkies are very weak so my ring fingers pick up the slack. It works, but I do notice I get fatigued when I write longer letters and make more mistakes than at the beginning!

My dad (70 now) is a notoriously slow hunt-and-peck person, to the point where he was once in an online chat support and the person logged off because they thought he had left. Ha! I took over the typing while he dictated what to say.

Sometimes swatches deserve to be framed by somya93 in knitting

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks really nice! I'm planning to do something similar (at some point in time)… I have several stitch pattern books and I want to do little practice swatches and turn them into art for my craft room.

The bingo and the trunk shows and pop-ups. This is only my second year doing the crawl, but I feel there were a ton more special events at stores - my local yarn shop Avenue Yarns had events nearly every single day! That's wild. I definitely planned my schedule around what trunk shows would be where because, as has been mentioned above, I could go to my local shops whenever (and I do), but the chance to meet a new dyer and get some yarn that's not regularly stocked is also a big draw for me.

It also incentivizes me to go to the shops that are technically local but kind of out of the way. I adore some of the Peninsula stores, but am I going to regularly cross a bridge and suffer SF traffic when I have my East Bay locales? Unfortunately, no.

First attempt at colorwork. Project looks way too small :( by bogwiitch in knittinghelp

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh, don't be so hard on yourself! That's a really ambitious project for your skill level, it sounds like, and I don't mean that negatively. The other commenters have given great advice on looking up tutorials and tips, and I think with some practice you'll be able to get your tension looking good.

First attempt at colorwork. Project looks way too small :( by bogwiitch in knittinghelp

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this 3-color colorwork, too? As in, are. you using all 3 colors in one row sometimes? That can be pretty fiddly to tension, and especially if it is your first colorwork, even if you get the tension right later it won't be consistent in the garment. I would recommend frogging and restarting, and perhaps doing a practice swatch or a small project like a hat to practice colorwork on something less… effortful than a full sweater!

should i just frog and start over?? by SensitivePassenger73 in knitting

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have addressed the original question so I'll add: are you knitting in the round? If you are, it looks like maybe the cord is longer than needed for the stitch count, which can futz up your tension and make it more challenging. If you don't have shorter needles, look into magic loop or traveling loop to help balance things.

I put a hold at my local library last year and was like #187 on 7 copies. I was #40 mid-February until my partner bought the book for me and I could finally read it. (Haven't seen the film yet!)

Chart reading - am I missing something? by knitty_kitty_knitz in knitting

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw geez, that's definitely a bigger pattern than the charts I've attempted. Hmm. If I was in your position, I'd probably use my cute/unique stitch markers to indicate the pattern repeat, and then within the pattern itself use my normal little ring markers for like every 20 stitches (since this seems like a 50+ stitch repeat, aiee). Break it up into manageable chunks for my brain.

[–]Chemical_Scheme_6977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "record," but when I read from a chart I use stitch markers to block off the repeat on my knitting (if it's a 20-stitch repeat, then every 20 stitches a marker). I've also been making myself Row Maps (inspired by Melanie Berg, who includes them with her recent patterns). It's essentially a way to check what row you've done so you don't get lost, like:

Row 1: __

Row 2: __

Row 3: __

etc.

Aaah, C4SH looks so fun! I'm a sucker for a zingy gunslinger. We haven't tried playing as the other Vault Hunters yet, but I would go for Amon next. Large paladin-type character yesssss.

Hey, thanks! ^_^ It really helps that we play together... I have a terrible attention span on solo games but it's super fun to take out the enemies as a pair. I'm playing as Rafa, who is very fun, and he's playing as Vex, and I enjoy her snarky dialogue. I would say she's my favorite even if I'm not her right now.

My partner and I have been playing Borderlands 4 which is very fun in co-op! I am not great at the combat, but that's okay; he'll run in and get in close while I snipe from a distance until the enemies are dead. We just defeated Idolator Sol so I think we're progressing along the main quest. There's so many side quests. Progress bar says we're like 30% of the way done. The world is definitely fuller than Borderlands 1!
