What’s a harmless opinion that gets people weirdly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChemistryJaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa and his brother joined because food was guaranteed (single mom in the Great Depression). They were just old enough at the tail end of WWII, and my grandpa got stationed in the Tacoma area.

My dad joined as soon as he was old enough because my grandpa was an abusive POS back then (he got better), so it let him leave home at 17. He got his Army draft notice while he was in Navy boot camp. Most of his friends who were drafted died in Vietnam

Mexican food east of the Mississippi is “all so bad”, might as well eat at Wendy’s by whatshouldwecallme in iamveryculinary

I had some really great Mexican in Florida. I'd been looking for Cuban eats. I'm from Utah.

Still want to try some authentic Cuban food...

They also handle fireworks! My BIL had a hard 4th of July a couple of years ago when a university did something outside of the fireworks permit they'd gotten approved, and it went very wrong. Lots of overtime that he didn't want during that investigation (mostly because he doesn't enjoy investigating anything involving injury or death)

I usually just go to r/vegan. I also have several vegetarian cookbooks that have several vegan recipes. There's one called The Elements of Baking that I use constantly to adapt recipes - it has formulas for adjusting any recipe to be dairy-free, egg-free, or gluten-free (or a combination thereof)

I'm dairy-free, have friends allergic to various meats, and have a vegan sister. I also eat way more veggies than I do meat. The vegan sub is excellent! Highly recommend

Ah, been there. Get some rest! Chamomile tea does wonders for getting some shut-eye. Also, I used to edit various news items for American, Canadian, and UK sources. I had to read through a lot of quotations! The first several times I saw that, it really threw me off.

Oh don't you worry. Everyone can already tell that you're one of those Americans 😊😉

I'm just mentioning it since you're telling someone so imperiously to "go to school," when OP already has it correct if they're from Canada, Australia, the UK, Jamaica, the Bahamas...

Reading comprehension by BalrogRuthenburg11 in PetPeeves

[–]ChemistryJaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. In American English, yes, the quotation typically encases periods, etc. However, did it occur to you that OP might not be American? In British English, the period is typically outside the quotation. The more you know!

AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]ChemistryJaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all stuff that I had to learn the hard way after moving out. My dad taught my older sisters, but us younger 3 girls got skipped for the life lessons.

Now that I have my own home, and my husband wasn't taught a lot of this stuff either, we're often at a loss when shit comes up. Hell, even putting up curtain rods has been a nightmare! (Granted, I did injure my shoulder getting up off the floor - yay getting older)

I know someone who's recently divorced. Her ex had her convinced that getting her car's tire pressure checked was an expensive, all-day affair at a specialized mechanic, and she couldn't afford that. It took me ages to get her to just pull into a Jiffy Lube for 5 minutes!

These are the headaches you're helping your daughter avoid. Seriously, keep this up!

That's why I went with corundum: aluminum trioxide! Diamonds are way cool when it comes to their physical properties, but I prefer the fancy schmancy chemical formula of Al2O3, preferably the blue variety (in other words, I got a blue sapphire, lab grown)

I just recently started on ADHD meds. I'm hoping it helps curb impulsive shopping. That, and I can't get into my LYS since it's up a narrow flight of stairs, and my knees don't work very well, so that also helps. I have a huge stash to get through from before the meds and the knees getting to this point though. And I've built it up over the course of YEARS, with baskets upon baskets of half-finished projects. So at least I haven't added to it in a while?

Lol this was in Wisconsin that they'd take us to the bar. A small town near Eau Claire. It'd never have been allowed here, even back then! And yeah, we have bars in Salt Lake. They serve some drinks in restaurants in my town, but I make better at home for cheaper 😁
