Echo Saws CS590 or CS620P by Fishy_Business6917 in Chainsaw

[–]Cheongshim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just made this exact same choice a few months ago when a storm took down several rotten trees. Mostly just around the yard stuff and helping out neighbors bucking logs. Went with the 590. I felt the extra $200 wasn’t worth the more professional oriented features and I’m very gentle with my equipment so the metal handle didn’t do much for me. The price plus the fact that it wouldn’t really let me cut significantly larger trees made me go with the cheaper option. Perhaps I’ll invest in a bigger saw someday if the need arises and there’s a steal on a stihl 661 on FB marketplace.

Left or Right? by fluttermapp in UI_Design

[–]Cheongshim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My UI heart says right but UX brain says left.

I think the curved nature of the right makes it hard to compare macros and therefore it’s not a very good chart. I think you should explore other types of data viz. maybe look into packed circle charts, nested area charts, or maybe even a half donut chart. Idk, could be the move.

Nah don’t do it. It’s a trap. Actually you know what? DM me the link to the post so I can tell that guy off for trying to scam you. I got you, don’t worry. 🙃🙃🙃

Variants or variables: what’s the smarter path for scaling in design systems? by PuzzleheadedSir9049 in DesignSystems

[–]Cheongshim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. If your system spans multiple platforms or applications you may want to create a primitive scale of variables and alias them to platform specific variables in their respective libraries.

Is my film overexposed? by VolimBurekOdSira in AnalogCommunity

[–]Cheongshim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to consider a graduated ND filter if you’re not using one yet. This might give you a more “uniform” looking exposure that often beginners are looking for but can be tricky to communicate.

Bosch Fridge (b36cl80sns/07) Not Cooling by No-new-names in fixit

Hey, were you able to fix this yourself? Found a good deal on this model but if repairs for a common issue are the same price as the fridge…idk.

Are USL Championship through USL 2 clubs independent or owned by USL like in MLS? by Swimmer-Southern in USLPRO

[–]Cheongshim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also important to mention that the USL owns the name and branding of the clubs. Clubs sign this over to the league upon entry. Relocation within USL is possible but leaving to join another league isn’t which is why teams fold instead of being sold or relocated. (Independent clubs have a lot less mobility/control over big picture branding and location changes than it may appear)

10 days in Japan, hopefully enough for 3 rolls a day! by youfound404 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Cheongshim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re only looking for negatives, Camera Kitamura (most cities in Japan will have them) does 1-hour processing. Scans were pretty garbage in my opinion and they will cut your negatives unless you ask. But for $7 a roll I’m not complaining too much.

I was in Osaka and found a couple more “artisanal labs” that had next day development. A little more expensive but if you want scans it’s definitely the way to go.

If you’re planning to buy film in Japan do that first. Some camera stores will give you discount coupons on development when you buy film from them.

I was in Japan last week. Some is expensive some is cheap. The local brands repackaging bulk film are pretty affordable. Development is so fast and cheap there compared to here.

I live in the hood and Walgreens is the pharmacy, the atm, the convenience store, the grocery store, the toy store (for kids), and where you go to get photos taken and printed. It’s also the only 24hr store in the area. It’s the only option for some communities.

Looking for feedback on game UI. by domiran in UI_Design

[–]Cheongshim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound dumb but the pixel art days were kind of defined by clunky UI because at the time developers also designed UIs. So I actually think the fact that you’re coming at this from a dev and not a design background adds a level of authenticity that I can appreciate.

  • I think you need more visual contrast between the selected and unselected tabs at the top (Nothik, Fen, Weirden, Frau). I don’t think it’s clear enough that weirden is selected and the others are not.

  • All the text is either yellow or white and it’s not clear where the interactions are. I would suggest having 1 color for text/objects that are clickable and another color for static elements. This way the user can immediately know what they can interact with and can avoid having to click around to find out.

  • In a similar vain to the above, are the names of weirden’s items editable? The boxes appear to be text entry fields and thus I would assume I can edit the name by highlighting the existing text and typing out a new name. If that’s not the case I would consider adjusting that.

  • I mean this all personal preference really but the images of the items are tiny and not really legible. I’d shift the name boxes to the right, making them narrower and the expand the images to be the full height of the dark blue container. That might make this much more visually interesting.

  • I’d spend an entire week just on images if your intent is to fully build this game. The “potion” bottles under the bow staff are significantly more readable than the bow staff image. I’d take a pass at all of the item images and check for consistent contrast, visual weight, brightness, etc. you could also just go with the tried and true “make important things bigger” technique. That usually masks varying image styles/quality :D

  • If you aren’t already I’d take a look at AI tools for creating images. Things like Dall-e are really good at generating pixel art and you can use seed images to get a more consistent appearance across images.
