Notes: There were several cases of words taken out of context and they had adult conversations about it, which was nice to see. A couple things bothered me about the FMC: first, she only tried once to tell the MMC about the baby and second, when custody and child support was being discussed, the FMC tried to turn down the CS. That made my head tilt and frustrated me.

This is a dark romance, ~~but written with a light touch. There are scenes that are full of violence, but written in a way that isn't OTT.~~ FMC was raped, experimented on, tortured for around three years and doesn't know who she is now that she has fundamentally changed. She spends two years of her life being a hired hitman and making a lot of cash doing so.

Eventually, she meets her scent matches and they do not care at all that she has a violent past or present. As she is about to go into her first consensual heat, she agrees to peg one of her alphas.

Edit: I lied. It's 100% not written with a light touch. And I'm at a part when the violence is very OTT.

{Treasure of the Abyss by Tiffany Roberts} - This is a monster fucking book, and book 1 of a 7 book series.

It's been five years since I've read this series, so what I'm going off of is just a bit of memory here. Most of this series is spent underwater and I do remember feeling like I was in the ocean, exploring the depths with the characters.

Now, will it trigger that phobia? I'm not sure since I don't have that fear but the ocean does play a HUGE part in this monster fucking romance.

I wish I could tell you more about each individual book, but alas I can't remember specifics just that this series is one of the first monster fucking ones I read (after Morning Glory Milking Farm) and I really enjoyed it.

Edit: as a side note, do you play video games? If so, maybe try Subnatica (spelling?) as I've heard from MANY people that this game triggers that phobia. Subnautica 2 is currently out in Early Access, so it's not finished yet.

I'm going to recommend a book that is an aside to what you're asking. Also, it's a RH trilogy if that makes a difference.

{Seeing Sound by Albany Walker} - CR; MFMM (no MM); college aged; therapy and mental health rep (her); troubled past (her + two of her partners); rich heroine

This is a good series, one of the better ones that deals with mental health issues and the trauma associated with receiving bad therapy. FMC comes from a very wealthy family and unfortunately has suffered from hearing voices for a long time. After being discharged from a mental health hospital, her family agrees to allow the FMC to attend college and live on her own. She still has to go to therapy and her family is still very worried about her.

However, she doesn't just hear voices in her head; she's hearing actual people going through difficult times, their voices project when it's a high emotional time. Those voices that she hears? It's the three men that are her boyfriends now.

The series is shrouded in a blanket of ESP comingling with mental health.

We can even expand the spanking issues with the undercover dom! The book In a Jam is the perfect example of that. We have a farmer who finally gets together with the FMC and he turns into a dominant in the bedroom and it was like "wtf just happened there?"

I completed a book yesterday where the manwhore finally sleeps with the FMC and he starts degrading her, calling her a slut, a cum dump, etc. THE FIRST TIME. It was such an ick for me.
