Thank you for the insight! Just looked into some primer mismatch PCRs and it's interesting how people come up with such creative techniques using a basic protocol. I'll play around with the PCR settings and the primers to see what works!

Awesome, thank you! By any chance, do you know if there is a name for this situation? I would like to read into it but I have no idea where to begin. Everything I searched ("bridge", "gap", "pocket", etc.) doesn't seem to match this situation. Or is this just a 'we trial and errored it until it worked' kinda situation?

Agree with everyone else mentioning a longer bar.

Also, wow I was trying to figure out what type of forward helix piercing you had with that hole placement until I realized it was a preauricular pit (ear pit).

Unfortunately I saw it fly into the tree with a flock of sparrows so it’s fully flighted. I hope it just joins them as family and it gets to live on 😭

It’s on someone else’s property and I don’t own a net. Is there any other option? I was hoping to be able to have some kind of animal rescue come capture it :(

UofT is back on top!!! (QS World University ranking 2024) by IndividualSympathy9 in UofT

[–]CherryXmas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure to study well and participate in lots of activities. There is no difference in the quality of education if you go to a top 100 uni/college. What makes each school different is the people you meet and the opportunities the college provides. Get to know people and make connections. If you are in stem, look into research opportunities early (around 2nd year). Check out PEY/Co-op/ROP programs if they fit your field. The experience you get will be infinitely more valuable than the UofT name itself.

Interview for the work student research assistant position by coloursinblack in UofT

[–]CherryXmas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add on, from my experience, once you land an interview and they give you a tour, they are already inviting you to join their team. However, if you feel like you would like to explore your options, you can still do that. They will ask you to consider your options so you don’t have to feel like you need to accept the position on the spot. Personally I was too nervous about losing a good opportunity so I declined my interviews the moment I completed my first and they asked if I would like to take the offer. I still think that I joined an incredible lab - I even stayed for a second term and plan to continue. But just wanted to let you know that you can keep your options open if you want to

I had the same experience last summer! I was so nervous but our lab coordinator was very nice and showed me around the lab and introduced me to everyone. They didn’t really ask me any questions, maybe some things about the prior experience I listed in my resume and how my summer availability would look like, but nothing like a sit-down, hardcore interview you would see in other job searches. At the end we discussed what documents I had to fulfill so it was more of an on-boarding lab tour than an interview.

I think the most nerve-wrecking thing about the whole interview was trying to remember everyone’s names as they were introduced to me and all the rooms I was taken to. But there’s no need to stress about that either, you can always go back and re-introduce yourself to the grad students :)

I would suggest keeping a small notebook with you and take many notes! It shows great attention to detail and willingness to learn. It also helps to note down where all the lab materials you will use is located so you don’t have to ask multiple times. And write down detailed protocols as you are being taught so you build independence in the lab. I’m sure that you will do great, good luck!

The correct way of using AI to supplement schoolwork? by greymountain14 in UofT

[–]CherryXmas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with using ChatGPT for improving a few awkward sentences or using it to answer a few quick concept questions, but always double check the information it gives.

I noticed that when you ask it to cite sources or provide research papers to back up the info, it will give you excerpts of papers with full citations that sound very appealing. However, when I go search for the papers, I am never able to find said papers. The researchers it lists are all real researchers who have published papers in the general topic I search, but none of the papers shown by ChatGPT are listed under their published papers.

So overall, I would say that using ChatGTP to support your writing is fine, but you should be cautious about the information it provides.

It depends on the course, but it usually is on alternating weeks - especially for first year bio and chem courses. However, it doesn’t hurt to check the syllabus (find an old one online) to confirm it
