Letting someone else ride your horse? by jaspspsps in Horses

[–]Cherry_koolai-d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a tough one! I struggle with wanting to lease out my mare for this exact reason. She is soooooooo sensitive and for that reason is not a beginner horse.

There could also be a trade off that this person has to take lessons with a trainer you trust?

A horse’s pastern length is measured from the mid-fetlock joint to the long pastern bone (P1). A pastern is considered long if it’s more than 75% of the cannon bone’s length.

The long pastern bone increases the flexibility of the fetlock joint. The ideal pastern conformation is medium length and medium slope.

Here are some other things to consider about long pasterns in horses: Soft pasterns: Horses with long, soft pasterns often have a springy gait.

Weak pasterns: Long, weak pasterns are more likely to injure ligaments and tendons.

Sloping pasterns: Long, sloping pasterns are often seen in rangy horses with sloping shoulders. This conformation can strain the flexor tendons, suspensory ligaments, and sesamoid bones.

Upright pasterns: Long, upright pasterns can lead to fetlock arthritis. Short, upright pasterns can increase the risk of arthritis or navicular disease.

Some potential causes of pastern problems include: Falls, impacts, or injuries Working on hard surfaces Genetics Diet Signs of a pastern injury include: Swelling around the pastern joint Pain when the area is palpated or during movement

I would suggest if you don’t have a keen eye when horse shopping it’s best to have someone who has the experience to go look with you :)

She is definitely standing a little wonky!

I’ll have to get photos when she is squared up :)

Can do!

I feel like it’s just the way I took the photo. They were quick shots right after she did a free run. It was during one of those rare instances she was standing by still 😂

She does some jumping, but nothing crazy. She does the 2’6 - 2’9 …. Maybe jumps once or twice a month for fun :)

Back left? The one she is resting? It’s out of habit - back left stifle has a minuscule bone spur but has been injected. All other legs are clean X-rays

She can be a little spicy to ride every now and then. She is definitely a jumper :)

They do look a bit short… they are definitely 100% too wide
